Hello readers I am of course MechaMento throwing you a brand new review. Today I am going to be the critic towards the arcade classic port, Donkey Kong 3. This is my second Arcade game review I have made successfully, my last one was roughly 650 words and that compared to some of my other reviews, such as my Chemical Brothers album (Exit Planet Dust) review which was above 3000 word and my 2000+ word Animal Crossing review, it was very small and appeared as effortless. So here it is, number 2, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. Remember that if you want to reply you must as always have a good cause to. I like a good response, that means you need reasons to what you are saying. Saying that the review is good or bad without reasons why comes across to me you not even reading my review. I do not mind people who skim through and spot any mistakes, I do not mind a small post but it has to be of a quality. Well I am going to shut up about replys and we are going to get this review going. It is time to engage you eyes, because we are going on a journey to the land of Donkey Kong 3!

Donkey Kong 3

Graphics
As you may be aware I have not done the "why I played this" paragraph to my review. Yes some people liked it and said it added a great personal touch to it, but let me be honest here. It was not really reviewing the game at all so have decided to jump straight in there and crack right down on the graphics of Donkey Kong 3.
The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) was Nintendo's debut to the home console and was infact one of the very first home consoles to hit the stores with some great impact. The console had an 8-bit drive which was quite advance at the time. The console was at the time comparable to most arcade games graphics wise. Some of the developers of the arcade games were generous enough to produce certain ports made specifically for the NES. Of course there were many arcade classics that made their NES appearance such as Pac Man, Dig Dug, not forgetting the Donkey Kong trio and in particular Donkey Kong 3.
The game has some similar sprites the original 2 Donkey kong games however some are new and important sprites were slightly enhanced. For instance the likes of the main villain, Donkey Kong, has had a few minor adjustments since the first game. This game was very different from the previous 2 so many more sprites were introduced. Since one of the aims of the game is to protect yourself and those flower looking things from huge swarms of bugs, a lot of work was done to create a number races of flying insects. Not forgetting to highlight the fact that you play as a whole new character, yes that is right, there is no sight of Mario in this title. I mean he must of caused enough trouble with the Donkey Kong family so I guess a change was rather necessary.
So did the Developers do a good job? Well yes they did. The graphics were well crafted and looked as though they took up most of the 8-bit memory. I guess I have seen better from the console but we do have to realize that this is a remake of an Arcade classic meaning they had to pretty much keep the same graphics as the original port. However there could've been a few enhancements because there are some other NES titles with much better use of the graphics quality that the console can handle. For instance the Mega Man games for the NES had what I could describe as perfect graphics for the console. They were in my opinion the peak of the system and 'I think the only game that I have played that even comes close to it is Super Mario Bros 3. I guess no one could break the benchmark and Donkey Kong 3 had a good try at it so I will give the a decent amount of credit, so I am handing them an 8 out of 10.

Sound
Usually in my reviews I like to go on and on about the games music since I am a big music critic but Donkey Kong 3 has not much music at all I will be mainly focusing on the quality of the sounds rather than my usual routine. This is also causing the paragraph to be a lot shorter than it generally is.
Arcade games are know for not having much music and just in general be full of bleeps. Donkey Kong 3 makes you really feel like you are in the arcade playing it rather than using your home console. The game keeps the Arcade cliche I just mentioned by just relying on tense sound effects. Firstly when Donkey Kong is about to fall from the 2 ropes he is holding onto a tense song begins to play and it gets faster as he gets closer and closer to falling. I think that is actually the only music featured while in gameplay. The rest is of course just your regular sound effects. Mainly the classic 8-bit bleeps you would get but I think the sound effect for the insect spray (I think that is what it is) is something a little more unique and if you want to call it special, it is special. It actually sounds like a real spray, of course it is not quite as realistic as it would sound on a Xbox 360 but for an 8-bit system it is perfect. Unfortunately the rest of the sound cloud is just the average quality of sound you would expect from an 8-bit style game. In some ways that could be classed good since it keeps a retro arcade feel to it but if they can create unique sounds then we begin to expect more.
I was, as you guess, disappointed with the fact that this game had no actual music (as in full length tracks). So I did not rate the sound at the peak 3 ratings out of ten and opted for a rating of 5 out of ten because I was impressed with the audio quality, just not much of it was used. What a shame...

Addictiveness
This is really where the game peaks especially due to the fact that it is an Arcade game and they were built to be addictive so more people would come back to put in an extra 25 cent or in my case, 20p. The game is known to be a complete twist to the other two games and luckily the risky move was made well because it still had its wonderful charm even if it was a shooter, if you wish to call it that. I guess they sort of followed the gaming crowd because it is very comparable to Arcade games of the likes of Space Invaders and others in the genre.
There is some sort of feel you get from playing games like that. You just enjoy shooting the crap out of things such as alien and in this case, insects. My fingers hurt after playing this game and for the good reasons. I just love spamming the fire button and watching those damn bugs die. I know it sounds really evil of me but you can not help this crave at all when something is addictive and the developers have done a great job at creating this effect.
I have been trying at the competision even though I stand no chance against the hard core highscore pros that you see winning most of the highscore contests.  I just don't give up, I mean even in the top 5 where I would not get any prizes but that will satisfy me. I have tried for this in other games like Pac Man and I have gave up pretty much straight away. For this game I can not stop trying even if I am crap at the game, that is the powers of this games addictions. This is exactly why I have been generous and have given the game a rating of a perfect 10 out of 10.

Overall
This game really is worth good hours of playing time but in some cases such as the sound, the developers have been lazy. A hint of music would of been a very nice addition to the game and since it goes without it, that is it's downfall. As I said the game is very enjoyable so that is why it has a respectively high overall rating. It also is playable by any skill level since the game begins really easy but increasingly gets a lot more difficult for you to progress until even the best gamers in the world will fail. I actually think this game is endless, but like pac man, no one actually knows (apart from the developers). Depth wise this game had little to offer. The levels were repeated over and over again yet that is not off putting. There is not really much to do in this game, it is just fun to play and that is what makes this game a favourite of mine. You would expect me to rate this game higher since it is a favourite but I had to be honest and I am not changing the truth!

This has been an original MechaMento review. Thank you very much for reading it, whether you skimmed through or put the full effort in to read the whole lot. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it and if you did not please tell me why it was bad because I am always wanting to improve. However remember my reply rules!!

MechaMento : Very good this review, Mecha! For a game that hasn't so much to offer, it is very good!

My first review appeared to be effortless like your first one as you said but the second one was much better!

Anyway, congrats for writing this good monkey review! I am proud of you!!
