The first time I heard that, I was kind of shocked. The land is huge, and yet it is nothing compared to the amount of water. I honestly was speechless.?

EDIT: Thanks to a lot of smart people, I had to edit the name of this thread.

I have to admit, it is a natural shock and fear. Especially with all the scares of global warming and the rising of the water level. If anything it has made me more or less aware that we have to make sure we're taking care of what little we have. We really take the amount of land we have and its resources for granted. I mean hurray we're all advanced  for the time but sooner or later I fear it could bite us in the butt if we aren't careful. Hopefully all these talks about the rising water won't happen and we can continue on...but hey..anything can happen.

That's a big shocker. I mean, I know there is more water than land, but really thinking about it is amazing. I hope the rising water doesn't become a problem. If it does we'd need those watergates like they have in New Orleans...

I don't really find it to be that shocking to be honest, but when you think about it, it just really goes to show how little of the earth is occupied by land. I can't imagine how horrifying it would be if global warming were to become and issue and the water levels were to rise, that would be absolutely horrifying! But it is probably going to happen because of all of the pollution and harm done to the atmosphere that lets in more harmful UV rays from the sun.

So I don't really find this to be shocking, I find it more of a horrifying feature when you think about how this can contribute to things like global warming.

I feel as if everything would be a lot better if we could live in that water. ( Which we would never be able to do )

I'm not sure what we're -supposed- to think about it?    I don't even know how we're supposed to have a conversation about it.

Honestly though.. I totally agree with Barathemos.  It'd be totally freaking awesome to live in under water cities.  There are restaurants and stuff under the ocean waters, but near shorelines.  They're fore rich people of course, but if you google them, they look totally amazing...

Thing is, the Earth his NOT 75% water. Now, about 71% of the SURFACE is water, but the surface is not the whole Earth. In actuality, water is just barely 0.02% water. The deepest part of the ocean only goes only about 7 miles deep. The first layer of the Earth, the crust, goes down to about 33 miles deep. The next layer, Mantle, goes about 1,695 miles deep (after the initial 33 miles at the end of the crust). The next part, Outer Core, goes another 1,404 miles further. Lastly, the inner core goes about 794 miles deep.

So with a mass of 1.35x1018 metric tonnes for the ocean, and the Earth's total mass is roughly 5.94x1021 metric tonnes, the Earth is only 0.02% water.

rcarter2 :  You know what's funny?  I couldn't stop thinking about this ALL day.  It bothered me SO much. When I originally came to post here, I wanted to just bust them out, but I knew what they were probably referring to, since I don't recall public school teachers ever going into the important details on the matter.

I knew you would come here and mention it with all the numbers, which makes me happy.... me being a nerd and all.

I waited ALL day for you to make that post.

Finally!!!!! haha!

Thank you so much.

Where to begin? Well, what do I think of it? I don't truly have too much of an opinion on the matter because I don't think about it much, and as Carter said, it's only the surface and it's not exactly 75% water but he already said that, but I bring this up because I learned this as a very young child at the age of err... I forget. Anyway, I was on my great grand parents house (Just a little side note is that at the time yes, they were both alive and one still is now.) and I was playing around and studying the globe when someone (I think my mother.) came up and started talking to me about it, eventually the conversation lead to the Earths surface being 70 some odd percent water, and we just kept on with the discussion for a good while, but this was probably over ten years ago by now and well, memories don't exactly get clearer with time.

But let's think about this from a different angle, shall we? Well, it's sorta fascinating to think about it really, I mean think about it, we live only on the surface (For the most part.) and we aren't even a full 30% and look how many of us walk the Earth, It's incredible really. This is the kind of thought process that makes you realize just how small we really are and just how big this world truly is, I mean we can barely comprehend it as humans beings literally, and most people truly can't even begin to.

Another thing to think about when it comes to the ocean is just how little we know out of all the aquatic species out there, I mean it's truly possible that we know the smallest fraction of a fraction when it comes to the deepest sections of the Ocean. I mean we do have trouble exploring it which does explain why we know so little about it but I mean still, it's another thing of some relevance that I find incredibly fascinating. (Although I still prefer Psychology personally but it's still an interesting field of science all the same.)

First of all, this makes a clear contradiction, why would a planet mostly made of water would be called Earth? Wouldn't it be better to call it already Water?
Altough "Water" would be a better appropriate name for it, the name would give the impression that the planet is only made of water, no ground, but that if you look only at it's surface like carter said.

Well, that is because life started in the water. The only reason we have land is because, all the rocks, dirt, sand, etc. happen to stack on top of each other, and rised above sea level. It was a long time before life started to live on land. Also, look at all the (wonderful) things in the sea, with all of that water, it was possible to have these things.

But, it also makes me wonder, if Earth was only 50% water, will we evolve more quickly? That would forced animals to start living on the land millions of years early. We would be more advanced if that did happen....

It never irritates. It used to fall..And oh,rise again,to a number in the 70s.Iand goes down...But...After all,I dont see pools, oceans and a lot of that in here...

Though no one fears ( seriously,drowning? )

But  think that is a good thing.then if we were 75 land and 25 water.....We will die, then

It almost makes me think that the water will eventually swallow up the land. I kinda know though that it will be a few hundred to thousand years if that ever happens - so I'm not worried.

Singelli :  Living underwater impossible?  Not necessarily.  During our embryonic growth cycle we develop gills, a little gift left over from evolution.  Give a hundred years or so genetics could be used to reawaken that part of our evolution allowing us to live underwater.  I realize I'm delving into Sci-fi a little here, but a lot of scientific advances have their beginnings in sci-fi.  Rockets, cell phones, submarines, and more.

well it's a good thing really, if there was more land then water the land would dry up all the water and we'd all day, so it's only good there's more water.

crazycatpup : I agree with this cat. But the land is also good because more land goes to more trees and vegetation and vegetation means oxygen which is good for us to stay alive!

What if there was 50% water and 50% land?

rcarter2 : I'm with Rcarter on this one.

The surface area is one thing for water to dominate the land but it's necessarily a fair representation.  Look at the total volume of both land and water above the crust and you may find the volume of earth increases a bit.  And most of this planet is core and mantle.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
