So more recently, Nintendo has been pushing Mario games out onto the market at an insane rate. We had New Super Mario Bros. 2 and U in 2012, and now Super Mario 3d World? They're all linear flag grabbing games that don't show off the true capabilities of their system! Nintendo, we need a new 3d Mario game. An open world Mario game, like Super Mario 64 or Sunshine. We need an outstanding, star collecting, boundary pushing 3d mario game on the Wii U. One that shows everyone that Mario games will not be the same stuff every year with a new coat of paint. What do you guys think? Are you getting tired of the linear, timed, flag grabbing mario games, or do you want more of them? Do you want a real 3d Mario game for the Wii U, and not a rehashed Super Mario 3d Land??

EDIT:
Played 3d World, and I can safely say that it's the best Mario game since Galaxy 2. Really excellent creativity, level design, control... everything is perfect. It is definitely NOT a rehashed 3d Land, it is better than that. While it is still a linear game that doesn't mean that it's bad by any stretch. Although, if they make any more linear Mario games after this gem, I will get tired of it. I really do want a game like 64 or Sunshine in terms of exploration on the Wii U . My original post was a perfect example of how so often people are wrong by judging a book by its cover.

The New Super Mario Bros. games at first were supposed to be a return to the 3d linear games. Unfortunately, they are all extremely easy, without any challenge, and don't really change enough. But as for Super Mario 3d World, I'm not really against. I loved Super Mario 3d Land, and playing it with four player action would be really fun.
I do wish they did a true 3d Mario game. What people don't realize is that there has been only one true 3d Mario platformer, which is Super Mario 64. I feel that they have a perfect opportunity to make one with multiplayer on the Wii U with the touchpad, so one player gets the tv, and the other gets the gamepad. Even a game like Sunshine would be cool. I just want a true 3d platformer, without gravity gimmicks, no linear goals, and just straight fun.

I definitely agree with you that we do need a 3d mario game. Preferably a sequel to super mario sunshine. But I am rather happy there is a 2nd super mario 3d game.  Since that is my favourite 3ds game.

A 2nd super mario sunshine would be amazing and hopefully not a big screw up. Super mario galaxy got a second game.So why not Sunshine

patar4097 : I don't hate 3d Land, it looks great. I'm just really disappointed that instead of a true 3d Mario game, Nintendo make another quick level - based game.

I'm fine with all the timed flag-grabbing Mario games, especially Super Mario 3D Land but I think we should get more new 3D games that are different than the classic timed flag-grabbing Mario games. Super Mario 64 is the best Mario game ever in my opinion and there should be more games like it.

I totally agree. Yeah, I like the flag-grabbing Mario games, but they are much too easy and they get boring after awhile. Seeing as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine are my 2 top favorite Mario games, it's no surprise that I want more games like them. Open world Mario games are the superior Mario games.

You're right ever since New super Mario bros. dropped in 2008 there have been an onslaught of sequels pretty much showcasing the same thing with some differences between them.

I feel for you epic-san. I mean, the side scrollers are alright. But it's gotten a little boring. Mario 3d land, was fun though. But I agree. Mario is due for a actual 3d game. One to show off what the WiiU can do!

I definitely think that Nintendo should start making more open world Mario games. The open world Mario games really never get boring. But the linear Mario games really are just like playing the same level over and over again.

epic-san :  Yeah, for the flagpole thing, I do got to agree with, I think it's pretty much time to do another ending rather than using a Flagpole, I understand the flagpole was the end of the level in the first Super Mario Bros. game, but it would be good for a 3D Mario game to have a door and key.

Ya a 3d game like super mario 64 would be great because you would get to do things in the order you want and I liked wandering around collecting all the hidden stars and finding the secrets in peach's castle.

awesomeguy279 : Exactly. A Mario game based on exploration (like SM64) for the Wii U would be just the game to show off what the console can really do.

I'm not so sure what the "flag grabbing" aspect has to do with anything. If a game is a good game, then that's all that matters. I'm not quite sure what graphics has to do with making a great game. I can give you many examples of games that are great but didn't have the best of graphics.

Besides, these things go in stages. I remember for YEARS that mario games were all 3D types and had nothing to do with "grabbing the flags" now that a few games that reflect back to Marios roots come out and people are going to complain? I find that hilarious.

Jordanv78 : I kept my original post up to showcase my ignorance at that time. And I never said anything about graphics. The general idea of my original post was that linear mario games with a timer and a flag at the end are getting kind of old. I'm yearning for a more open 3d Mario, like 64, where you could get whatever star you wanted when you were dropped into a world. You don't see that anymore, with levels being unlocked in a linear fashion, and a timer and linear level design not really catering to exploration. Sure, you can take a step out of your way to find a star coin, but they're not very hard to find.
I stated in my thoughts on 3d world that it was a great improvement, but the linear nature is getting old. I mean, they're releasing linear Mario games yearly. When Mario games were 3d, they took years to make and were really special. Only 4 games were created in a 3d fashion, and they were 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2. Each one got progressively more linear, with Sunshine starting the tradition of not being able to get stars out of order, even though there were some hidden shines in the levels and hub world.
In the Galaxy games, the hub world has no stars in it, and while there might be a hidden star in one level of a galaxy, any level in a given galaxy usually contains 2-3 original level layouts, then rehashes them for a prankster comet or two. Galaxy 2 did have Green stars which added some sense of exploration, but the path was still rather linear. Keep in mind that in no way do I despise linear games - they are as great as any other type of game provided they're designed well. All I want is a more open Mario game that really pushes boundaries and shows what the Wii U can do, allowing large, sprawling worlds with complete freedom of exploration, allowing you to complete objectives in whatever order you wish.

I don't mind the "linear" style of any game. Mario goes well with a clear cut goal. I like Nintendo's revieval of classics, adding beatiful graphics at the same time. For example what they did with Link to the Past in Zelda. I do not mind what Nintendo does with the newer Mario games. They could make them harder (though then I wouldn't be able them then) and change the course map and story a bit (lot).
I would love to see another Mario64 game again though. Where you must obtain certain objectives in free-roam worlds.

This is what I would love happen. Every person involved with making Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars reunite and make another RPG game. That is one of my all time favorite RPG games to date, and it is criminal that the crew that made that game did not try to do it again.

I think that we need a 3D Mario game since the last one we got was Galaxy 2 that was not extremely linear. I hope for one maybe in late 2014 or 2015.

I would enjoy a Super Mario 64 HD re release because I really enjoyed the original game and the DS version, so why not a Wii U version in the best graphics out there right now.
