Overall: Mega Man is a good start to the series. Although it has its flaws like it’s controls and semi-bothersome difficulty, it’s still fun to play. I would recommend trying this game, but if you’re new to the series I wouldn’t have this game be your first to try.
The game can be played on multiple platforms like the NES, Virtual Console, the Wily Wars remake, on the Anniversary Collection for the PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, and many more.
Mega Man 1 scores a 7.5/10 (better than Good).

Graphics: For a 1987 NES game the graphics look detailed, but compared to the later entries in the series this one looks the worst. The backgrounds for most of the stages are one solid color with no clouds to spruce things up. The character sprites look nice though.

Music: The Mega Man/Rockman series is well known for it’s stellar soundtrack and this game is a good start, not the best in the Classic series, but it has some good, memorable tunes. I guess my complaint with some of the tracks is that they’re repetitive.

Addictiveness: I go back and play this game fairly often. Being able to pick which order you go through the game is a great feature of the series allowing you to replay the game and try it in a new order.

Story: Two genius robot designers named Dr. Tomas Light and Dr. Albert Wily created the first humanoid robot named Rock along with Rock’s sister, Roll and six more robots to assist in various types industrial work like construction and working in extreme conditions. While Dr. Light was praised for his creations, Dr. Wily grew jealous and reprogrammed the six work robots to help fulfill his ambitions of taking over the world. Rock, a domestic robot volunteers to stop his robot brothers and Dr. Wily’s plans so Dr. Light modified Rock’s system to become a combat robot named Mega Man.

Depth: This game has lots of depth like the other megaman games out there, So assuming you have played those, ill just leave it at that. 6/10

Difficulty: Of the six games on the NES, I found this one to be the hardest and I think most people agree. Combined with the limited continues and lack of passwords beating this game in one go may be difficult for new comers. The vertical sections of the game like at the start of Elec Man’s stage require precise jumping in order to proceed.
Many of the Robot Masters deal a lot of damage to you if you get hit by their attack, especially Ice Man and Elec Man. However, your Master weapons also make quick work of them.
The Wily stage bosses are all difficult, especially the first stage’s, the Yellow Devil. He splits into many pieces and moves to the other side of the room very quickly. You have to dodge every square of yellow goo in your way and hit him with Elec Man’s weapon, repeat the process five or so times and then he’s dead. In the final Wily stage you have to fight four Robot Masters in a row: Bomb, Fire, Ice, and Guts all in a row without losing a life. Then after all that you will have to fight Wily who has two forms which also both have to be dealt with in one life. Thankfully there is a checkpoint before you fight him.

Development: (EXTRA) The series’ first game was developed by roughly six people. A man by the name of Keiji Inafune created almost all of the game’s characters and enemies. Also he made the Rockman logo (Mega Man’s name in Japan) and cover art. After he finished designing the characters he turned them into the pixels you see in the game. Due to the limited color palette of the NES, Mega Man was colored blue since blue had the most shades of the available colors. It should be noted that Inafune did not create Mega Man, he already had a basic design when Inafune joined the team, but he did create Elec Man and Bomb Man. Mega Man’s design is based off of Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy. Keiji Inafune stated that the team’s biggest difficulty with the first game was the media they were limited to; 1-megabit.

Basic Gameplay: Mega Man, for those of you who have never played a game in the series, is a run and gun type game. At the end of each stage you fight against a boss called a Robot Master. Each boss has a unique attack they use like Cut Man for example uses his giant scissors while Ice Man spits sharp chunks of ice at Mega Man. When you defeat a Robot Master you will get their weapon to use against another Robot Master as a weakness. A feature that made Mega Man stick out from other games during the time was the ability for you to not only have more than one weapon, but be able to pick what order you go through stages. The game is composed of ten stages, six for the Robot Masters and then four for the final area, Dr. Wily’s Robot Manufacturing Plant with each stage having a boss.
The game’s controls aren’t perfect, but they aren’t horrible. Mega Man feels like he’s on ice a little bit when he stops moving so making precise jumps may be hard at times. The D-Pad moves Rock around and selects what weapon you want to use when you bring up the weapons menu. A jumps while B shoots. START pauses and brings up the weapons menu while SELECT pauses the game, stopping the music.
As you go through stages defeating enemies you will find that they drop various things once and a while. Life capsules which are yellow and refill some of your life meter, blue capsule which refills a bit of a Master weapon energy of your choice, and bonus point orbs which add more to your overall score at the end of the stage. The score system would be removed in future titles since it’s not important. Also unlike other games in the series, you have limited continues and no passwords. Although the game may only have ten stages, it’s difficult so a password feature would’ve been handy. In Elec Man and Ice Man’s stages you are introduced to the disappearing-reappearing blocks which would be in almost every Classic Mega Man game afterwards and even in Mega Man X5. Also in Elec Man’s stage is the Magnet Beam which is essential in order to beat the game, however nothing in the game tells you about it so be sure to grab it after you defeat Guts Man.

Tips?: If you’re having trouble with a boss you can rapidly press the SELECT button when using a boss’s weakness to get multiple hits on them. This only works on the NES version though.

If you need to refill on life or weapons energy you can leave a screen that has life or weapon energy then come back and they’ll be back.

The Yashichi refills both life and weapon energy, but it’s only found in Wily stage 4 before the Robot Master Gamuntlet.

Although the Magnet Beam uses energy each time you use it, if you hold down B you’ll get a longer platform without using extra energy.

Thanks for reading my review of Mega Man 1.

FUNNY LITTLE UNNEEDED STORY: Megaman is standing at the front door to Dr. Light's Lab. He has a backpack on, and is visibly upset.
Megaman: Okay, so why do I have to do this again?
Dr. Light: It's an experiment to see how well your AI will integrate with normal teenagers. You are fifteen, after all...
Megaman: I gotta go in as a freshman?! Aw, crap...
Light: Just go with it, Rock. You'll have fun, I promise.
Megaman: I can't even drive there?
Light: It wouldn't be consistent with the role you're trying to play. The bus is your only way to school.
Megaman: Yeah, I guess you're right.
Light: I can drive you...
Megaman: It's okay. You don't have to do that, Doc. You'd probably just end up embarassing me, anyway.
Light: I loved high school, myself.
Megaman: Yeah, I still can't believe you had that beard back then, Doc.
(Shows yearbook pic of Doc)
Light: Heh...I used to sneak food into class with this thing. (Feels at his chin hair again.) Hey, lookee here! (He pulls out a wad of some grey, nondescript meatlike substance. It smells a bit like hardboiled eggs.) It's some of my old cafeteria's salisbury steak! (He sniffs it, gagging slightly.) I think I'll get Roll to dispose of this...you should go ahead, Rock, or you'll miss your bus...
Megaman: Right.
>
At the bus stop, he sees Zero standing there, dressed in plain clothes, trying as best he can to get his huge blonde locks into some semblance of kemptness. X is sitting on the bench nearby, dressed simlilarly, and coughing, it seems.) Hey...Zero? What are you doing here at the bus stop? And a hundred years in the past, for that matter?
Zero : Ah, the writer wanted to put us both in here 'cause he likes us...something about omnipotence over whatever happens to us in his stories or something...some kind of union thing, I guess...
Megaman: Right. Anyway...having a bad hair day?
Zero : (glares) Do you have any idea how hard it is to keep this mane smooth and flowin'? If I were workin' today, I'd just call in sick or something...I'm just not me without my cool hair...
Megaman: (sighs) Anyway...X, you okay? That cough sounds pretty bad.
X: (still coughing violently) Hey...*cough*...hey Rock...*cough*...
Megaman: What the heck's the matter? You got a weird computer-virus stomach flu or somethin'?
X: My...*cough*...my voice...
Megaman: Your voice?
X: Yeah...It's been acting up again...
Megaman: Hey, it'll be okay. High-schoolers half-expect freshmen to still have their squeaky voices, anyway.
Xloudly, shrieking) I DO NOT HAVE A SQUEAKY VOICE!!!!!!
MegamanEyes are wide after X finishes. A window nearby is broken, and Tango now lies dead on the sidewalk) O' course not, X...they all make fun of you for no reason...
X: You're doing it again!
Zero : Shut up over there for a minute, will ya? I can't hear myself think over your blabbing! Why don't you take a few shots of WD-40 for that voice of yours, X? Geeez...
X is infuriated and rushes over, clawing at Zero.Thankfully, Megaman holds him back from the neck of the turtleneck X is wearing. Throwing X finally back onto the bench, Megaman uses Time-Stopper to freeze X in place.
Megaman: Time-Stopper!!
Zero : Funny...I thought you lost all your special weapons after each game. What gives?
Megaman: Ah well, the writer needed some quick way to keep X out of the conversation for awhile. That was the best he could do.
Zero : Oh. Well, anyway, the bus ought to be here any minute... Oh, Lord, does my hair look okay?
Megaman just stares.
Megaman: And you WONDER why people think you and X are gay...
Zero : Alia, I am SO going to kill you for using up all of my quadruple-strength hair gel...
Megaman: Shut up and act natural. Here comes our ticket to a day of hell.
The bus pulls up. Megaman steps on board. Zero follows him closely.
Driver: You gentlemen got fare?
Zero : Great. Exact change, I suppose?
Driver: Yep.
Zero (sighs): Perfect. (Digs in his pockets.) I've got a five-dollar bill, a battery, and a wad of lint. Will that do?
Driver: Where you boys goin'?
Megaman: Ryutaro's High School, ma'am. Other side of town.
Driver: Well, this ain't exact change to get there, but...I'll be willing to let it slide if Red Boy here gives me a smoochie...
Megaman: It can't be worse than having to walk, I guess. Go ahead, Zero. We've got no other way of getting across town.
Zero : Ever heard of a taxi, genius?
Megaman: They're all down this week. Something about Wily's robots having a field day with them all downtown. I should probably be checking that out, but...I guess this is more important to the Doc.
Zero : How 'bout teleportation?
Megaman: We can only go places where we've already been...and I haven't been to the high school, and I'm pretty sure you haven't...
Zero : (grumble)
Driver: So what's it gonna be, boys?
Zero : Um, Rock, can I see you...over HERE...just a second?
Megaman walks over. Zero chokes him around the neck.
Now THIS is for your bright ideas! I AM NOT kissing that woman! She's absolutely hideous! She looks like she could be Frankenstein's grandmother!
Driver: Well?
Megaman: I...have a plan.
Zero : Huh?
Megaman: I know how we can get this bus.
Megaman whispers to Zero. Moments later...
Zero : All right, Ms. Driver. Here. (He stands up, walks up to the driver's seat. Sighs loudly and crosses himself.) Kiss your red boy.
Driver(lunges forward): Hot dang!! I got me a man!
Zero dodges her and pulls the door handle quickly. She falls out of her seat and through the open doors, then continues tumbling out. She rolls until she hits the bench that Megaman froze X on.
Zero : Yee-hah! (Shuts the doors.) We got us a bus!
He drives off, squealing the bus tires.
Time-Stopper finally wears off of X.
Driver: Yahoo! C'mere, handsome!
X: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAIGH!!!!!!!!!!!! (Runs away, the driver chasing him off.)

Mega Man is a pretty cool and challenging classic. It gets better with experience.
