After clearing "Saints Row 3"?
I have to admit I needed to jam through a few levels of another game to truelly feel powerful.
(Odd right?) After sinking an Aircraft-Carrier and destroying a Heli-carrier? I still needed more?
At times like this I pop in "Stanglehold".
It may not be the greatest game on earth but I still love the thing.
If you just got through taking on an entire High-tech Uber Military Strike force and still need a "payoff"? Then pop in "Stranglehold"
I recomend it for any sandbox fan that needs a good nights sleep.
(Bonus: I got my copy years ago for $5.00 Bucks. It should still be as cheap today.)

I started this thread for people that feel like there could be something extra in the modern games that may need a forgotten game of the past to complete the experience.

So, for my first recommendation to the Sandbox game fans that need a little extra Punch?
Look no further Than John Woo's Release with Midway.
Here's a video for fun.

stranglehold isnt that old in the grand scheme of things.
its certainly better than saints row three.
I always like matrix the path of neo. it was fun since hand to hand martial was 50% of the game.
trying to defeat an agent like that was pretty entertaining too.

thenumberone :
The matrix, Path of neo is one of my favourites too.

I see no reason why all sandbox games can not have "Bullet time" in today's games. It is a simple program to add too from what I understand. They even have a form of it in Devil May Cry 3 and on the H.D. release? They jammed 3 games into one disk. So I do not think that technology is lacking at all with the current console generation. I often feel as though they are demanding less game for more money.
Anyway.
What modern game would you recommend playing with that one to get a full on experience?
G.T.A.? (I saw footage on those games and always fall asleep just watching them. At least with Saints Row? I get a laugh. Of course I am not the biggest fan of any "Sandbox Game". They all look and play like Tomb Raider 1-3 for the P.C. So, what if you get to do crime? Nothing Pioneering in my eyes. Then again.. I have been Gaming for a long time.)
So..
What Modern Hit should mix it up with the "Matrix" Stuff?
Good Luck.
Peace.
(This time I am really going. I just got stirred from my room-mate who is checking the news on the trail on T.V.)

I think they probably avoid bullet time to ensure they dont rip off the matrix. That could lead to a lawsuit or ridicule from fans.
I would like more games like that though.

Modern classics? I wouldnt say GTA. Its overhyped, and frankly, boring. When you have played half an hour, you have oplayed all there is, and are just repeating again and again. The early ones, listed from my opinion of them were good:
gta San andreas
gta 3
gta vice city.
Before that they are repetitive, after that they are repetitive and take themselve way too seriously, its a a game, if i cared so much about realism i wouldnt play games.

There are a few modern games worth note. Back in the day, i had true crime, new york city. It was the successor to streets of la, which was great, apart from the dragons and vampire crap they added to a cop game.
N.Y was cool because you were a cop, you could be good or bad (and got points to this end) and it was sandbox. You could seize contraband, frisk people, give speeding tickets, and if you were just a jerk you could even plant evidence on people which was fun. This game, was better than gta iV.
They were making a modern one, but it went overbudget, so they sold it to square enix. They didnt have the right to the true crime franchise, so they renamed it... sleeping dogs. I bought it thinking it would be true to the original.
Bummed. Its a polorising game, some people love it, others hate it. Me, i thought it was ok, but havent touched it since. So true crime new york city is the forgotten classic there.

There are a few fairly modern games I do consider classics.
The godfather 2.
The plot is stupid, and the charatcer faces dont even look like the original cast, but its a game thats in a pretty much untouched genre, Mob boss. It lets you build and control your empire, hire a 'crew', and choose how to spend your money. I have probably replayed it about 4 times.

Another, i play often, whcih probably wont interest most people, is shaun white snowboarding. I like snowboarding and tend to put this in when i want to mindlessly grind, flip, and generally mess around with some good backing tunes.

Huh... i actually feel like playing that now.

One of my all time favourites is hitman though. They made a new one which i bought, and frankly, it sucked. They are pandering to a bigger market and killed the game in the proccess. They released all 3 ps2 games on an hd ps3 release though, which i bought.
I dont know if you have ever played them but I love the series. Games foccuss on high visuals, gory fights, or just generic crap nowadays. In hitman you are there for 1 target onnly, and the aim is to get it done clinically. Its a lot more satisfying when everything you have done to prepare comes together and you get that perfect elimination, be it a sniper from a nearbye roof, a dose of poision to the morning coffee, or a slip over a railing and into the abyss below.
I dont think i will ever tire of the game. The fact you can take disguiss to allow you access to different areas just increases the possibility's.

Other than that, there are a few hit and miss games. Older ps3 titles like battlefield 1943, and farcry2 are both enjoyable for their gritty and persisten destruction. Those are pretty much the only current gen games that I feel are worth playing into the future. Too many games on the market are just pointless after completion.
I have copies of assasins creed, dishonoured etc, and after completing them, i feel no desire to replay them.
To that extent, i also feel kind of screwed by what game companys sell me, especially with games like assasins creed and call of duty, where really, all that changes are the plots and maybe a few new weapons or abilities.

Since we are going on a "Crime Spree" Theme with the games we mention. (Almost all are "Crime Fiction Games".)
I'll go ahead and mention "The Reservoir Dogs Game."
This is a short game (only a few hours long, but not too short to feel gypped.) done right.
My favourite parts? The whole game.
BUT
If you want a pure laugh out loud moment? Then hit the driving scene with Mr. Blond and the Cop in his trunk. I have not played a level like that ever before or since.

(Closest thing would be the hostage trick in "Saints Row." The part where you could get extra cash from a passenger in a car you recently jack.)
There may be other hostage jokes in games but my favourite is in "Reservoir Dogs".
(A close second would be "Dead to Rights Retribution". The scene where you turn a suspect into a "Mule" for ammo and use him as a shield with his high-tech "Flack Jacket".)

Back to the Jewel Heist Game.

This game has allot of things that can be typically found in Sandbox games but with a more ridged structure and a solid level to level system in place.
The money that went into this game was more focused around a cinematic experience than a solid game but the game still works and holds up. (Kinda funny. When compared to modern flops like "Kain and Lynch 2". Or any 4 hour Money vacuum.)

I recommend "The Reservoir Dogs Game" for people who love Movies and need a break from a long game that has little cinematics. I don"t want to mention owning a copy of "Crackdown 2" but it is the only modern game I have that comes close to a lame experience. (It was a $7.00 loss but it was my first sandbox game.)
Here's a video for fun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r9VTmy1nIc

(Wonder why it got crappy reviews. Seriously. The tale is about a Job where everything goes wrong.)
Good Luck To All.
I'm done. Stick a fork in me.
Peace.

I love the Resivoir Dogs movie, so the game is good? It did pretty badly with reviews. Is it still worth a buy?
Games that I consider to be classics that aren't talked about much are:
The Matrix: Path Of Neo (Enter the Matrix was good too)
The Godfather
Manhunt 1 and 2
I love all of these games so very much. I saw that the Matrix was mentioned earlier, that makes me proud.

I never played "Manhunt". I guess I'll give it a go. The thing about that game is that I could not find a reviewer that I liked or hated enough to decipher if it was a good buy or not.

Reservoir Dogs?
Yes, it is good. It is not a game that makes you feel like a Bad@$$. That is kind of beyond the point. The tale is about a heist that goes wrong.
It is kind of a directors cut but you have to play through it. It is made by the same people that did "Sneak King". So that is a solid strike against it. Those developers could not give away their games. But for Reservoir Dogs? It works. The idea is not about being a Bad@$$. It is about trying to keep a human professional and survive. The Characters are very mortal and play that way. If you can accept that then it is a good game. But most gamers are into being in control of a super human and not having a job go wrong. So, "the concept of enjoy the ride"... is a bit out for many of them.
But for the five bucks I spent on it? It was fun.

Next...
I'll break the crime spree (Not really) and mention a game with assassins schools.

"Bushido Blade" 1&2. My recommendation for today.
I suggest playing a copy of this after suffering through "Soul Calibur 5".
The time economics of the One Hit Kills sounds like a bad Idea till you play it.
It is a wonderful experience that I recommend for all fighting gamers that need a good time after a bad buy.
Good luck.
Peace.

Earthworm Jim was original, artistic and funny (even though it was a very overrated game at its time), and while it can be frustrating at times, everyone deserves to finish the first two games (and watch the overlooked Saturday morning cartoon series) at least once. I hate hearing modern critics complain to no end about how Earthworm Jim supposedly has "bad controls". It does on some ports, but not on most of them. The problem you are having is with the difficulty, although the controls could be a little annoying at times. It also sucks when people criticize the show to no end. I had a lot of fun watching the "Sword of Righteousness" episode with one of my friends during lunch break. We both laughed quite a bit, and we both loved it. I know the show can be a little crappy at times, but at the very least, it's far more interesting than almost all of the other shows based off of video games. Sonic's first cartoon (Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog) is easily the worst and ugliest kids' show I've seen since Johnny Test, and it got canceled faster than he could run.

Earthbound had some pretty crappy battle mechanics and the lack of a sprint button was a bit obnoxious, but anyone who has the patience to tolerate its sloppiness should at least do one playthrough of it on a Super Nintendo emulator. If nothing else, you get to struggle and fight your way to the epic (and disturbing) final showdown against Giygas, which is one of the most legendary moments in all of gaming.

Zack & Wiki was a fantastic puzzle game for the Wii, although I could never really get into it.

Rocket Knight Adventures (Sparkster) was pretty cool, I suppose. I mean, a sword and a jetpack are pretty much the only two things that a guy like Sparkster needs in order to be awesome. I know a lot of underrated games. I just don't have room to list all of them.

Does "Fallout" require on-line status to play and enjoy?
I was on the fence about that game due to the possible need for it to be on-line in order to enjoy the thing.
I might grace it if it does not require on-line services and extra fees and such.

"xandermartin98"??
"Earthworm Jim" is not exactly a forgotten hit. Everyone seems to know about it. I dig it an love it. But that is a great game to mention.

But "Earthbound"???
The crowd is 50/50 divided on that subject. Plus it has never been forgotten. Not one day passes in this site where it is not mentioned. I have no doubt about it's merits of a good game but I have not the 100 hours time for that experience. I would rather play another famous hit like "Mario R.P.G." or "Crono Trigger." I never finished Mario R.P.G. and I have only seen 2 of the dozen endings in "Crono."

"Earthbound" just does not appeal guys like me and is not exactly forgotten. (Thanks to "Smash Brothers". It gets its Due.)

If you want a forgotten hit that you can find in this site???
There are hundreds to choose from. A cool fighting game that I discovered After Marvel Vs Capcom is "Cyberbots Full Metal Madness".

Another that is a Beat-em-up is "Captain Comando".

There are a hundred different games that are forgotten here.
Try "Magic Sword." The Main Boss in that game could be Devil May Cry's Dante's Father.

Those are Just a sample of games here that do not get much hype.
Thank you for your entries. They are fun to read.
Good Luck.
Peace.

I never hear anyone talk about Galaga. It's such a great classic shooter game that deserves a lot of attention but one of my friends is the only one I've heard talking about Galaga.

The original Metal Gear, or rather, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I don't think anyone really talks about those games anymore, and they were fairly good!

I'm gonna say the Ratchet and Clank Series. I always tell people who haven't played it to play it and I've told a lot of people.
It's a Action/Adventure game that takes place in Space and many different planets located in 3 different galaxies (Solana, Bogon and Polaris).

The overall gameplay is pretty straightforward and easy to enjoy.
You collect bolts (the game's currency) which you could use to buy weapons and armor.
You can even upgrade your weapons through defeating enemies to make them even more powerful.
The scenery in the game is also something to admire. It also features humorous cutscenes and an epic story line. Don't let the rating scare you away from buying it, you don't know what your missing .
