Not too long ago I reviewed a game called Cosmic Carnage, it was a decent one on one fighter, plagued by "in your face" muddy visuals and slow control. I actually think Tempo is similar in a way. Like Cosmic Carnage it tries to show off the 32X's huge color palette. This time however it does it well. Is this game good on its own? Well, keep reading to find out.

Gameplay B: When I think of Tempo, I think of your typical typical platformer, on crack. The levels are large, and poorly designed, but I never really seemed to get lost in them. Thanks to the arrows, and well thought out teleporters. Each level is jam packed with enemies, traps, and secrets. I didn't really have the temptation to explore, and that's because the secrets are not satisfying to find. There is an exception. There are certain spots where you can "dance" it will defeat all enemies on screen and bring out your girlfriend, which can be quite useful. The control is good, but getting to high places while flying can be difficult, thanks to the fact that the same button to jump, flies when held. This game seems great so far, but what really ruins Tempo? Well its the poorly designed stages, and cheap hits. While the cheap hits are not terrible, I find that Tempo is not a good attacker. Sure you can jump on, kick, and stun enemies. But thanks to the god awful level design. You'll find it difficult to kill an enemy. I have no problem with hard to hit enemies, but this game is cheap about it.

Graphics A-: Tempo is filled to the brim with color, and personality. That's why I think 32X fans love it so much. Each level is colorful, yet detailed, and unlike Knuckles Chaotix. Which had random shapes splattered everywhere. Tempos levels actually have a distinct theme to them. The multi-layered scenery looks amazing, and the scaling sprites are done well. There isn't too much pixelation. What really steals the show in this game, is the fluid animation of the sprites. I feel like Tempo is a 3D character, and not just a flat object. The only problem I have with the visuals is that sometimes they are a bit too distracting, but its not a major issue.

Sound A: This game has some of the best music in any 32X game. Sure, its a bit funky, but it adds to the theme of the game. The only song that sucks, is the lame rap intro. Which is cheesier then the Mario Bros rap in the Super Mario Bros Super Show, don't worry I never watch that show, I did when I was little though. The sound effects are well presented, and I like how there is no digitized voices outside, the clapping, and cheering of a crowd, or that god awful rap in the beginning.

Replay Value B: Although there is nothing worth coming back for, Tempo is just high in the fun factor. That's why I come back to this game quite often, despite its flaws. Its just so addicting.

Depth D: I think Sega rushed this game a bit. There are only 7 stages, and while they are fairly long, I still find the lack of stages to be a sell out. Still each stage is unique, and offers a wide variety of different obstacles. You also have 3 mini games, but they really are not anything to write home about.

Difficulty Medium Easy: I found Tempo kind of easy, once I got the hang of it. The cheap hits, and poor level design, do crank up the difficulty a few notches.

FINAL OPINION: Tempo might be rough around the edges, but its creativity is unmatched, and its a lot of fun to play. I think anyone, can get into Tempo. Even 32X haters, might enjoy this game in a way. So overall Tempo is a like-able fun platformer, that's rough around the edges. If you like this game, try out the Game Gear Tempo game, Tempo Jr.

OVERALL RATING B:
Stay tuned for more Sega 32X reviews and more. In fact, I might even do a Sega 32X system review, since I have the add-on.

Loved your review! Just like your Cosmic Carnage review it was very easy to read and with a good amount of detail. I have seen reviews that are just boring and packed with useless words just to bump up the word count, but this is not one of those cases. I do not own this game but have played it a little on here.
