During lunch, my friend (who LOVES the Fire Emblem series) asked me how I liked Awakening. Now keep in mind that Awakening is my first Fire Emblem game. He asked me how many units I lost and said none. I told him that I got units killed, but they came back after battle. I said I chose to play on Casual (or whatever it's called) mode, where you don't permanently loose units. He said nothing else except have a shocked look on his face. Is there not some "casual" mode for the other Fire Emblem games?

The only other Fire Emblem game with 'Casual' or 'Newcomer' mode is Fire Emblem: Shin Monsho no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiy?~. This game was only released in Japan, and was released for the DS. It's a sequel to Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. So yeah, I can understand why he was surprised. Usually, when your characters die they're gone forever. I personally think it was an unnecessary addition, but meh.

Yeah in the series it pretty much is when your units die you better say bye because they will not come back in the other games of the series but for Nintendo to give that option just makes the series quite pointless for the challenge is pretty much gone when you choose casual.

I did my first playthrough of the game in casual mode just because I wanted to experience the story without having to worry about characters dying and stuff. I then went back and did another playthrough in classic mode and boy was it harder. I lost quite a few characters: Virion, Kjelle, Fredrick and one of the crappy Pegasus riders. I also lost one of the characters you get late in the game in the first battle that they joined. Just for the hell of it I tried to play on Lunatic mode on classic and I couldn't get past the first real battle. Fredrick was the only character who could even kill any of the enemies and Chrom would take like 1 hit to kill.
