To begin this review, let's start with the graphics. They are pretty good for NES standards. My only main complaint with the graphics is that it is very difficult to see enemies in some areas. I also like the title screen. It is excellent for this time. The graphics are overall impressive for a NES/Famicom game.
For music, it is nothing special. In fact, it is terrible compared to other games on the system. Even for a pirated game, it is still awful. It is still great compared to some other pirated games. For example, it sounds beautiful next to Sonic Adventure 7, Sonic 3D Blast 5(Game Boy) and Pokémon Gold (Famicom). The sound effects are bad as well. It is like a high pitched "shrew" when you pick up rings. It sounds like a high pitched, "Dee dee dee dee" when you hit spikes or and enemy. Concluding the sound, it just isn't good at all.
Moving on to addictiveness, I wouldn't play this again. It is just Mario trying (and failing) to be Sonic. I just don't know why somebody would play this more than once. No offense to anyone who might like this game! Even for a pirated game, which I don't expect a lot out of, it has no addicting quality whatsoever.
The story of Somari is basically the same as the story in the original Sonic. The only difference here is that it isn't an enjoyable experience to go through in this game. And I am not sure, but if you can get Chaos Emeralds, it is even more tedious and stressful here than in any of the real Sonic games. Overall, the story is the same as the original Sonic, but more stressful to progress through.
The size of the game is smaller than the original Sonic. Why is it smaller? There is no Scrap Brain Zone! If that spoiled it, I apologize. But it is shorter than the greatness of Sonic 1 on the Genesis. I don't know what else must be said here. It is almost impossible to beat, but I never bothered to finish it. I got to final zone and died basically automatically.
The difficulty of this game is just unbelievable. As I mentioned earlier, it is nearly impossible to beat. The spin dash is slow, it glitches a lot, there are places that are impossible to get out and the controls are awful. I could of schooled this game if the controls weren't as bad as they are. While you are spin dashing, you can't control yourself at all. Another complaint I have here is there are no checkpoints. This game is extremely difficult. To conclude this review, I say this game is terrible. I give it a 0.2/10.
