Proper fans are being replaced by ignorant little kids.
The gaming days as we know and knew are slowly disappearing and there is nothing we can do about it.

I'll make a second statement about the video games.

They are being released incomplete half of the time.
Take the differences in Soul Calibur 4 to Soul Calibur 5 and compare.

There is so little competition in Games now it is encouraging unhealthy practices.
Take for example the "all on-line all the time" mess that eventually led to a developer being fired. ("Adam Orth".)

With no competition there is no standard for developers to rise-up and meet or beat.

Now many of them are just pondering ways to suck the cash out of the player.

I see no reason why games that only provide 5 hours to cost $60.00 a pop.
Plus they often force you to go on-line and buy extra stuff.

The quality is fine. But When a dumb idea surfaces you have to question it.

Look past the disgusting mess with animals + Humans... and just remember the fact pressured sega for an early release.

I do not believe that video games are getting worse. People like to point out all the terrible games, like Sonic '06, which have been released recently. There have been quite a few terrible games lately, but this is not a new thing. Many people tend to remember the great games of NES, without remembering that for every good game on the NES there are several awful games. Games with broken controls, awful graphics, some games hardly playable. This is no different from today. And there are still good games being released to this day.

As far as originality in games there are plenty of Indie games which are interesting and innovative. I would have to say that the bigger companies are innovating as much though. As far as challenge goes i would have to say that games in general are much easier than they used to be. But still there is a recent trend of difficult and challenging games, and some of those old NES games were a little bit ridiculous in their difficulty. 

Anyways, I personally don't believe that video games are getting worse. While there are plenty of examples of bad games, you can't forget about all the good games that have been released recently. 

When there are new games introduced into a series I believe that the novelty of that series begins to wear off to people who have been following it for some time already. For the younger generation, the third or forth installment might seem like "the best game ever," while some of the other gamers who have been following the series since day one might have enjoyed the first or second installment more. The first time experience is usually the best for an individual; at least, that's how I view it, simply because it is still something new. The newer games simply can't compare to the feeling of playing a game for the first time because you already know most of the mechanics and what to expect from that series.

Needless to say, I also believe some companies need to let go of their franchises now or else they are going to run them into the ground; and that there are some genuinely horrible and rushed games out there. However, this might be because of our slowly rising expectations and standards. A game that seems rushed today might have looked like our Bioshock some five years ago.

But.
there are many games that are better with an earlier version that the latter.
Take "Devil May Cry 4" and Compare it to "Devil May Cry 3".
The 4th game was my introdution into the series.
I Love the Third game (H.D.Set.) just as much as I love the fourth.
Witch is better? I could not decide for a long time.
After Playing both for many goes?
I have to say Game three beats the fourth game.
It is just too much stuff to invent before the next instalment to even fathom existing. Music, Characters, everything.

No one will say that the N.E.S. version of "Ghostbusters" is better than the X-Box version.

Try to be specific in Identifying Nostalgia fans clouding the judgement of real quality results. I see it too and it does happen allot.

There is merit for many that have the stigma of nostalgia goggles.

Don't be afraid to call out the Nostalgia goggled people and dish out a few examples.
Then Put them in their place and be done with it.
But...
No need to be "out with the old all together"... when you kids just get 5 to 6 hour adventures. (Just Sayin.)

   I think they really are just dumbing it down and adding special effects. They show the commercial with the highlights of the game / movie and those are literally the best parts of the movie/ game. A lot of people will buy a game because of the GRAPHICS and don't think the producers don't know that. When was the last time you saw a movie and then after it was over thought, wow... what a good story?

Yes, I'm along with other and think there's always been good and bad movies/video games. Everyone who thinks that both of those things are going downhill might just not be watching/playing the right things.

Has anyone seen the Life of Pi? It's fairly weird but a very good movie and many of the other movies that aren't blockbusters tend to be higher in content than explosions and special effects.

Also I do have to disagree that older games are better or that newer games have less depth as yet again, it all depends on the game. A CoD or shooter will have no depth was a RPG will likely have major depth. If you think that western games are becoming too easy or too vapid, try some Asian games. Many Asians get mad if their game isn't very difficult, since they see a game being difficult as an assurance that they're getting their money's worth.

TL;DR:

It all depends on the game/movie. If you think a certain genre is boring/easy, start trying another genre.

Yeah movies and video games are only going downhill now, people are running both out of ideas and money to make good quality stuff, so they are desperate to make mediocre stuff for quick money. When video games first started out with pac man and mario and all of the classics, those were the best games and they are only getting worse because like Jboy said we are becoming more exposed to the sexual and gory type stuff that isn't as interesting, fun or addicting as a mario game or any of the classic ones, so yes I can agree that video games are going downhill as well as movies because a lack of ideas.
