Mega Man. A very influential game series that has been around for 25 years. In honor of the 25th anniversary of Mega Man, I'm going to somehow figure out how I used to write reviews like I did back in May 2012 and review Mega Man 1-10, the Game Boy games, and the Game Gear game. And maybe the X games. Anyways, like every game series, there was a beginning, a start to the series that would set the path for all the potential sequels. However, these games usually lack the features and enhanced changes that sequels make, and this is especially true in Mega Man 1.
Graphics - 8 The graphics are excellent for 1987, but I felt like some if the textures were a little... random. Take the blocks that you can pick up with Gutsman's ability. That texture looks as if they just put a bunch of strange shapes and such all about in the space that the box takes. Speaking of Robot Masters, their graphics are fantastic. 8-bit games are always much better when they are colorful. That's why I like the Game Boy Color so much, colors and pixels are a match made in Heaven. Everything is very colorful and detailed. The reason it is only an 8 is because, well, Mega Man 2 has better graphics.
Sound - 9 The music in this game is fantastic. The Mega Man series (excluding 8) is known for having a great soundtrack, and this is no exception. My favorite is Elecman, not because it's the same song as Journey's Faithfully, but because this song truly pushes the NES's sound to the limits. That's what Mega Man 1-7 did, push the system to its limits. And yes, I did say 7, that game is better than everyone says. Capcom did a fantastic job composing the music.
Story - 7 The story isn't exactly cliche, but it is kind of an every-day story, for NES at least. Dr. Wily built 6 Robot Masters to destroy the world. Dr. Light, his nice counterpart, built his second robot, Mega Man, to destroy them all and defeat Dr. Wily.
Depth - 7 Compared to the other 9 games, this game is short because it only has 6 Robot Masters. Even the first Game Boy one had 8! Sure, they are sequels and I shouldn't be comparing a game that came out two years later than the one I am reviewing, but really. I think that there could have been two more Robot Masters.
Difficulty - 8 The game is actually quite easy for Mega Man standards. It only took me about 2 hours and 30 minutes to beat this game, usually it takes me three hours and that's partially because there's no especially challenging stage. The bosses are out of control though. They just throw every attack they have at you at once and BAM! you're dead. That's why the Robot Masters have weaknesses, and they really help.
Overall - 8.5 Although certainly not the best main series Mega Man game, Mega Man 1 still is a very enjoyable game. Sadly, it has been extremely overshadowed by Mega Man 2. Even though MM2 is better, this game will always be enjoyable to me, and hopefully it is to you also. Mega Man. A very influential game series that has been around for 25 years.
