Vincent1875 : First I'd like to say that I've read the bible and studied it thoroughly, hoping to be a preacher(Like my dad), until I became an atheist. The main reason I'm an atheist now is because I read this bible. I'm not just specifically talking about the reference of killing children in psalms. In Numbers, god specifically orders the absolute destruction of the Midianites by Moses and the Israelites. Man, woman, and child. According to the bible, this is what happened. The overall point that I was making however, is that the bible is chock-full of atrocities ordered by Yahweh. This is why I would have to sacrifice my own morality to follow Yahweh. Even the meek Jesus supported slavery, and the concept of hell. The overall point that I was making however, is that the bible is chock-full of atrocities ordered by Yahweh. sloanstar1000 : I was referring specifically the the psalms thing. Also if you think about it the existence of Hell changes morality itself. Since people generally go to Hell for eternity then the moral thing becomes doing whatever gets the most people into Heaven. All worldly problems would be insignificant in comparison. Sort of like how when you divide 1 by a number the larger the number is the smaller your result will be. Eternity is infinite. Thus any suffering or pleasure one gains during their few decades on Earth would be completely negligible when compared to an eternal afterlife. That's why I don't really see the sense in people saying they'll take their chances in Hell if God was proven to exist. Is 70 or so years of defiance worth 10,000 years of pain? 20,000? 50,000? 500,000,000,000,000,000,000,000? |

Vincent1875 : I actually mistyped in my comment, I meant to say the "former" choice, instead of the "latter"(I'll go ahead and edit that). I would worship god(though insincerely) if it meant I would not be tortured forever, sacrificing my morality in the meantime. |

If it was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exists, my initial reaction would be fear. Give me a chance to explain this. When I was younger, I went to a very strict church. They didn't so much preach about God's love as 'do what I say or GAWD will make you SUFFER FOR ETERNITY!!!!'. They also had a bad tendency to say what not to do but never elaborate on how to be forgiven if you did. It was traumatic as a kid to have to feel like a war criminal everytime I did something even remotely bad, it's what caused me to partially fall out of religion in the first place (the other being my eventual conclusion that the God of the bible isn't a fair, just god that deserves praise). Despite my disbelief, I think I would be willing to change my views and be more religious IF he really was a fair, just God.
If it was proven that there WASN'T a god, I would feel pretty sad. Maybe even depressed. Many people believe in or need to believe in God and for it to suddenly be proven you were wrong your whole life... My heart would go out to them. Truly. Also, SoL@R: You didn't really answer the question. The thread was not saying "there is no god what do you do", it was asking "in a HYPOTHETICAL situation what would you do if it was proven/disproven." I'm not trying to say you're wrong in your beliefs, I'm just pointing out that you didn't answer anything. If it was proven that there WASN'T a god, I would feel pretty sad. Maybe even depressed. I'm comfortable, more then comfortable with my belief in God. In fact, I'm more certain of my belief in God then I am of anything else I know, and profess the faith I have in His existence on a regular basis. I'm confident I've found a lifestyle which will perpetuate the circumstances which allow me to preserve that confidence. My faith in Him plays a major role in the continued zeal with which I testify of the truths I've discovered, observances which most deeply resonate with what I've come to understand about life, the universe and everything. I will be perfectly okay if I find that God was proven to me as being 100% percent undeniably real because that is how I try and live everyday- I believe that there is a way to gain access to the immutable, and that this unassailable, spiritual knowing is something everyone can strive to have accompany them throughout their daily life, and that it testifies in it's own very personal way that God lives, that he is a God of love, perfect in power, in wisdom, and in intelligence, a God of truth who cannot lie, the creator of this entire existence including everything in it. I can say I know this, because the way I've come to know is by definition an extension of His being, and is purposed with the responsibility of answering those who exercise faith in Him and ask to know believing He will answer them. Like wise, to answer your second question, I would have done just as the author of this thread has deemed would be his response to what is 100% irrefutable evidence to the non existence of God if I'd never discovered the power of living as I do now. I used to live my life out rather gloomily. I would put on a happy face for those who sought it, but I would be rather depressed, and simply waiting to die, confident that life's only constant was death. I know this because for years that's what I did. I was a nihilist who was in denial about his nihilism. They call that non dualism these days, but what it comes down to is you don't think anything is because if it was how could you tell? Thus nothing is and everything is everything else, unless yous think otherwise, something everyone can do, and does. That's what I used to think anyway- I'd probably just keep living as if I had irrefutable evidence that He does live, because that's what I want to believe and I can with my knowledge of just how wrong I can be sometimes, especially in the face of thinking I'm 100% right. Well since I am a muslim my reaction wouldn't be really different. If there was 100 percent proof that he doesn't exist I would become an Atheist, simple as that. If there was 100 percent proof that he doesn't exist I would become an Atheist, simple as that. |

I'm an atheist, so if it was proof in a lack of deities I'd just sort of shake my head and snort like "See?" However, although I don't consider myself agnostic and I firmly believe in the nonexistence of deities, if it was 100% proven that there was a God, then yes, obviously after the initial shock and disbelief I guess I would be "religious", as in believing god exists, because I go where the facts point me. As for what I would literally DO about this, because I have always been an atheist, I guess I would be going to Hell no matter what, right? I mean, whatever. I guess humans don't have freedom of speech...? What a jerk of a god! XD But anyway, I probably wouldn't change much, because I'm pretty sure that I'm the type of person who cares so strongly about what she believes in that I would literally argue with whatever god was proven (if that was possible, anyway, I would try) if I disagreed with any of his (or her, I guess, as I suppose some people worship goddesses,) designs for the world. "NO!" I'd scream defiantly at the sky, "DISCRIMINATION IS WRONG, GOD! LOOK AT YOUR LIFE! LOOK AT YOUR CHOICES!" Then he would probably smite me and send me straight to Hell. XD Hahaha! Actually, I would probably enjoy reprimanding "god" for being a jerkface corrupt murderer, even if it didn't last long, but I don't actually believe that's possible, so... But hypothetically, yeah. I'd stand up for human rights, I think.
Note that I don't actually "hate" god, like some religious people seem to think that atheists do. This was sort of a joke... maybe. Just hypothetical. I do not believe in god. At all. It would actually be stupid for me to truly "hate" what I perceive as only a widely believed in fictional character. It would be stupid for me to "hate" Santa Claus too. Just saying because this appears to be a wide-spread misconception. Of course, as always, believe whatever the heck you want! I have no right to tell you what is right to believe in, I meant no offense by this post, and this was just my opinion. Interesting topic, by the way. Kind of funny to think about. I think it'd be really hard for everyone else if any one side of the argument was proved, and to sort of be forced to learn you were living a lie. Maybe it's better to continue wondering. PokefanKala : What if God actually agreed with the large majority of what you stand for, but simply disagreed with your conclusions? What if he/she/it allowed you to argue with him/her/it with no penalty and the god were to explain their reason for holding this, that, and the other true instead? Basically, what if you and God disagreed on lots of stuff, but God was chill? What if God actually agreed with the large majority of what you stand for, but simply disagreed with your conclusions? If it were that he exists : Of course. How do you explain miracles of child birth, or blooming flowers ? Who put those into being? Who put us into being? Nature just came about by itself? Or did someone or something make it? Exactly. If it were that he Didn't : Oh. Well I guess Science will have to explain everything to mankind then. No supreme being to govern us. Nothing to keep us in check but our knowlegde of what is right from wrong. If we still even rely on that anymore. What is the sens of being good if you will not be rewarded? Where will I go when I die ? Just back to earth it seems. From now on I am my own man. If it were that he Didn't : Oh. Well I guess Science will have to explain everything to mankind then. The way I see it, most people who do believe in GOD, even me, would probably be completely shocked to see this happen. On the other hand, if proven to not exist, I probably would not be affected as much. This is because we spend our life, believing, but not seeing. My answer is somewhat boring on this one because If god was proved to exist I would be like well duh because I already have proved 99% certain to me that he Exists if God was proven to exist .... (witch is actually impossible for me) I would not change the way I behave very much at all since I do what I do because I think it is how the world should be . Although I may have to check myself into a crazy ward because I often feel/hear GODS words If god was proved to exist I would be like well duh because I already have proved 99% certain to me that he Exists if God was proven to exist .... If God was proven to be 100% existent nothing in my life would change.. I would still live for God and praise him.. I don't question my faith in him now so as of now I 100% already believe in him anyways. If God was proven to not exist I don't know what I would do. I think I would be really sad and probably wonder what was wrong with me because God often speaks with me when I pray to him and I just honestly don't think I would of been able to get out of half the things that have happened to me without Christ. It's a really scary thing for me to think of but sense this is most likely not to happen I will be okay. I have faith that God exists and I believe in him and I feel that is what matters. I would regret being atheist. Denying someone's existence is mean. I have had friends who have just pretended that I wasn't their. It started off with him not seeing me for a long time and when I chose to see him he either forgot about me or was just ignorant to who I am. I would hate for God if he were to exist to feel that way. Denying someone's existence is mean. I have had friends who have just pretended that I wasn't their. If God existed, I would thank it for creating the universe and wonder why it didn't interfere after the creation of Earth at all. More or less, I would continue living my live. Since there seems to be a policy of no interference, I would pray just as frequently as I normally do. If God didn't exist, I would continue to live my life as it is. I would want to see how the rest of the world reacts and see science accepted by all reasonable people. More or less, I would continue living my live. If God didn't exist, I would have to continue my scientific research about the origins of everything I pondered. I am religious, so my faith and my science tend to make sense in my head (though many churches disagree with me). If God DID exist, then it would settle many things: which faith was true to his (or her) word? Would this encourage more people to follow their wishes? And were people following their instructions properly? If God DID exist, then it would settle many things: which faith was true to his (or her) word? If God existed, I'd wonder why he let all the killing and strife and epidemics go untouched. I'd wonder why he let people pervert his message into hate for others. I'd be mad at him for letting all the suffering go untouched, and I'd want a good explanation for why he kept himself hidden and make all the scientific evidence seen to point away from his existence. But I would also thank him for all the good in the world. Can't be too negative. If it was proven that God didn't exist, I'd take comfort in the fact that the whole time before god was conclusively disproven, that I was right. I'd smile as the Jehova's Witnesses stopped knocking at my door and Bible based discrimination ebbed away. The extremists of Islam and Christianity would have no reason to keep bombing abortion clinics and blowing themselves up as martyrs so that they can have virgins in the afterlife (or so they thought). Scientific advancements would accelerate exponentially due to there being no unfair shackles, and the human race would become known throughout the galaxy. But, humanity is the real problem here, and all the previous conflicts would spring off of a new basis and the world would return to normal.
