Overall - 9.1 EarthBound, a game where you go around killing hippies, ride in professional band's cars, and get yourself into the list of people Nintendo hates! That's what most people know when they hear the term EarthBound. However, there was a game that came before it that almost came to America in 1991, but was cancelled after the game was complete? That game is Mother, or, EarthBound Zero.
Graphics - 6 The graphics in this game aren't the most impressive I've seen, and for NES, graphics don't really matter that much. The battle graphics are nice, but they're not going to make me look at these graphics Mother 3's. You might say that that's not a fair comparison, 8-bit to 32-bit, but go and play Super Mario Bros 3, Zelda II, or Yoshi, and you'll see some great NES graphics. The graphics aren't the best thing about this game, as you may be able to already tell by the overall rating of 9.1.
Sound - 9 The music for this game is, to say the least, a masterpiece. From songs like Pollyanna, Being Friends, and Snowman, it has a soundtrack so original and so great, it compares, or even beats, many games today... oh right, shooters don't have music. Anyways, quite a bit of the music has appeared throughout EarthBound and Mother 3, and have become iconic representations of the series.
Addictiveness - 10 The game is very addicting. If you're in the mood for a challenging RPG, you can go through this in a weekend. With the enemies, dungeons, characters, and items, this will keep you playing, wondering what will happen to your amazing cast of characters. You play as Ninten, Ana, Lloyd, and Teddy, with temporary party members such as Pippi, you really want to see what will happen to the characters next.
Story - 9 The story, as with any Mother game, is truly great. It begins in the 1900's woth George and Maria. They disappear, but George comes back. Your objective is to stop Giegue and find Maria. Across areas such as Snowman, Podunk, and Magicant, the story consists of illness, talking animals, haunted zoos, teleportation, and much more that I would explain, but it would spoil the game for those of you who don't know, or haven't played it.
Depth - 7 The game is disappointingly short, yet it has a lot to do. In the areas of the game, there's hidden items, buildings to check, and enemies to fight. This game is an RPG, with all sorts of weird enemies like Wallies, Pseudo Zombies, Bats, The Hippies, Starman Jr, Big Foot, and Ullrich. There's key items you must get, PSI powers you must use, and people you must save. What is PSI? Well, for those of you who haven't played a Mother game, and have played Super Smash Bros, it's like Ness's or Lucas's moves like PK Starstorm and PK Thunder.
Difficulty - 8 This is the hardest Mother game, and one of the hardest NES games I've ever played, that is, for good reasons. The game lets you save whenever you find a phone, it gives you health/special replenishing items, the game gives you everything you need, but the puzzles and bosses are what bring up the difficulty. Although the game is fun, you more than likely will die once in this game. It's true challenge, not bad controls, not few items, not anything un-necessary things, just fair chalenge.
Overall This game is amazing. If it was released in America, I would make sure it was in everyone's NES collection. It is truly an amazing game, and if it was remade with new music and graphics and released in America, this game would probably be a best-selling game, not only by Mother fans, but by anybody looking for a classic RPG. If you haven't played this yet, you should make it ne of your highest game-related priorities.
