I was interested until it looked like we would only be using the old minecraft....

I'm up for this if we use a full version.... otherwise I'm not likely to participate.

geeogree : I don't want to expect everyone to purchase the new version, which is $26.95 (99.9% of the users can't even afford to donate $10 to the site). Plus I'm not sure if you can host the new version yourself.

Davideo7 : You can host servers on the paid version as well just to clarify.. I'd do it myself but my computer wouldn't cope.. Is there any way that we Brits can donate?

Yes it is a shame that it isn't the actual game so to speak. As I've been looking forever to play on a server with decent people. But even if it is the free version i still think it's a great idea. I have no idea how you will enforce the plot idea but hey it probably will increase usage on Vizzed

I have been wanting to try minecraft for a while now. This will be the best I'll have if you get it. I just hope a 2.4 GHz processor and 4GB of RAM can handle it.

I know. I understand that so I have no problem if you use the free version.... simply saying that if it's not the full version I don't imagine I'll participate. Still interested in what people come up with though.

sonicmcmuffin : Yeah, via Paypal. The free version is still good (I tried it out), it's actually the old version. A lot of the features the new version has we don't really need anyway since we'll mostly be using it to build 'Vizzed Ville'.

AuraBlaze : Those specs should be enough.

geeogree : Out of curiosity, what features does the new version have that the old version doesn't have that makes you not want to play the old version?

I'm assuming the old version is building only and likely has only half the blocks the current version does.

I play minecraft to explore AND build, not just build. I'm not really excited about just building a town.

geeogree : This is according to Wikipedia:

"Older versions of Minecraft are also available for players. Unlike newer versions of Minecraft, Classic is free to play, though it is no longer updated. It functions much the same as Creative mode, allowing players to build and destroy any and all parts of the world either alone or in a multiplayer server. There are no computer creatures in this mode, and environmental hazards such as lava will not damage the player. However, some blocks function differently as their behavior was later changed during development. For example, in Classic mode, TNT will act like any other block and break when hit, but in newer versions it will detonate after its fuse is lit."

So yeah, sounds like it's just meant for building, which is what I'm currently interested in. If this gets enough participation and enough people express interest in paying for the newer version, we can go with that one eventually.

geeogree : I was also thinking that if we ever did go with the paid version, I could have some sort of offer on vizzed this summer where I'd have 4 full version codes I'd buy and than give away. Not sure what the offer would be though, but things that'd help out vizzed, examples:
-Refer a certain number of users to the site
-Write a certain number of reviews or articles
-Submit a certain number of screenshots
-For staff members, get a certain number of staff points in a single month or total

It sounds like it could be kinda fun.
Iv never actually played minecraft but it looked ok when i youtube'd it.
I wouldnt pay for the full verson though, since it seems pretty simplistic.
It reminds of stranded 2, but poorer graphics and resolutions. Since that dosent haveonline though minecraft has it trumped there

yeah, it seems like the classic one is all you really need if the point is to build a city. You're going to want to set limits on who can do what though. As in people are going to need to register somehow to prevent random people from logging in and ruining the city.

That occured to me too, it would be pretty lousy if someone built an absolute monster of a building just for some kid to smah it to pieces.

Okay, you might want to look into this, but I have hosted small LAN servers before on the free version--I was able to make multiple "worlds" in which some were creative and some were explore.

So the free server should support both explore and build.

Ohhh! You need to look into minecraft "cracked" play. Actual minecraft servers that are not visible on the main website with all those "classic" servers.

I just thought of something. If you got enough interest in people willing to pay for the full version, wouldn't that pretty much show who COULD donate a measly $10 to the site? Just a random thought. haha. Maybe if you got a butt load of interest from users, maybe they would be willing to donate to get the paid version

No kidding If this becomes extremely popular, think there is a way to work in donations?.......maybe.
I am curious though about the point others brought up. Is there a way to make it to where random users can't destroy whatever they want? I could see someone who decided to rage quit completely destroy the town instead of spamming the board. Actually, just think if someone decided to build a pornographic building instead of posting porn on a thread Not that I think anyone who was rage quitting would take the time to do that.

rcarter2 : I don't know the details about having a minecraft server and what you're able to do and restrict. If there isn't a way to prevent random people from destroying stuff, maybe it'd be available only to Trusted Members or something.

Yeah, and if you did have your old computer recording what goes on, that can offer some protection. Like you said, with that, we can always know who tore down or altered someone else's work.

Actually there is, there are all sorts of auto-protect add-ons. These add-ons can erase all actions done by a particular user for a set amount of time. Regular backups of the server can help were something to crash.

When you think about it, Minecraft has become such a popular game that nearly all of these questions have been answered and dealt with, it's just a matter of getting familiar and learning how to set it up and integrating the right ones into the game to make it fun and playable.

rcarter: Also, no need for that, you can have everything logged in terms of which user edited what blocks and undo everything for that user.
