We got us a superhero game right here in Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Made by Mindscape in September 1991, this game is based on the hilarious cartoon show. You know, the environmental one that had Ted Turner? The one you couldn't take seriously? How exactly does this guy qualify as a superhero? Because, he has superpowers. He may not be Batman or Superman, but hey... HE CAN HAVE HIS TERRIBLE GAME TOO!
Okay, so the plot is to own the five eco-villians (One for each level). Each level is split into two parts. In the first part, you take the Eco-Jet(plane) through a bunch of enemies, to get to the end of the level. This is hard, and I don't mean the GOOD kind of hard. This hard is cheap hard. Because, the enemies will randomly change formation as they get near you. Not to mention that sometimes, your LIMITED projectile attacks( You have an attack for the five elements in the game, Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, HEART!!!) miss. Even if they hit right on, occasionally they won't do damage. Sure your jet has a 180 turn move, but really, turning around is for wimps. Oh yeah, if you touch ANYTHING, like the scenery or projectiles... you will die! That's pretty much the gameplan.
Even in the second part of each level, the gameplay doesn't change that much. I mean, you basically are flying Captain Planet around... except he changes into the five elements to get past pollution. However, these alone ZAP his hit point bar. Why does that happen? Because this game is very, very stupid. In fact, that's the whole game right there! So, you can understand my disappointment that the game, can't you at this time?
The graphics are actually, well done for the NES. Yes, there are better, but the in-between pictures do actually look like the characters involved. During Gameplay, the background, and most of the sprites on the screen look good as well. In fact, the only thing that looks a tad bit out of place is Captain Planet himself. Though, I can forgive that, because it must be hard to make a guy with a Mullet on the NES. What?
The sound, if you can call it sound, is easily one of the most annoying sounds in NES history. In fact, I was seriously considering giving this game's sound the honor and privileged of getting a zero. However, as much as I would love to, there's a game for that (Action 52, I'm looking at you.)
As for the story, well, it's a Captain Planet Story, and the game has no depth. It's a game that tries to be something like Contra, but because of the controls that tend to be TERRIBLE.... It just comes off as a game that I never want to touch again. We got us a superhero game right here in Captain Planet and the Planeteers.
