I believe evil is defined the way tRIUNE, play4fun, and Hoochman have described it. Evil is the absence of what is good much like cold is the absence of heat (energy) and darkness is the absence of light. There has to be some point of origin for all of this; otherwise, there is no purpose to exploring and understanding this topic. I believe that starting point is God.
God is good, and because of this He set the standards. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit they should not have even touched, they did something that lacked goodness; through deception, they disobeyed the one and only law God gave them. Much of what we see today continues to show this same pattern. Much of what we do is based on how deceived our hearts are on believing what is good. Murder, adultery, stealing, it is all performed due to our deception and lacks all goodness. Anyone can say these actions are evil, but Jesus, the Son of God, pointed out that it all comes down to our hearts. He who hates his brother has committed murder at heart. If a man looks upon a woman and lusts with his eyes, he has committed adultery in his heart. One day in the temple, Jesus saw a rich man give a percentage of his money. Then he saw a woman step forward and give the only two coins she had, leaving her with nothing to her name. Jesus told his disciples that the woman had given everything to God, but when he spoke this he did not merely speak in the physical sense. The woman gave the only coins she had because she trusted God to provide for her. If a Christian does not give his all for God, he has deceived himself and has stolen from God the life he should have given. God is good, and because of this He set the standards. Evil is anybody who tries to make the world different from the way I want the world to look. And if you think really hard about it, that's your definition of evil too. Want people to live? Murderers are evil. Want people to not have abortions? People who have abortions are evil. Want gays to be allowed to get married? Traditional Marriage advocates are evil. Morals are relative. Although I don't dispute the purity of geeorgee's intentions this kind of subject, just in itself, still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's the reason why I hated studying philosophy in college. The common thread throughout the history of philosophy has been the refusal to acknowledge the difference between questioning everything and just pretending not to know everyday facts--usually the meanings of everyday words. Here's the thing: there are *tons* of words we understand the concept of very well in an intuitive, or at least non-verbal, way and yet still couldn't adequately define for the purposes of a dictionary if our lives depended on it. How would you define "existence"? Not by synonym, I mean, and not with any sort of circularity? But you still know when something is there and when it is not. If I ask you whether there's a rock in my path you don't ask what it means to be "there" in the first place, you just glance down and say "yes" or "no". That's not to say that you'd know how to articulate the concept of "there" if I asked you to. Another example would be time. What is time? We don't even really know, and to the extent that we do it's awfully hard to express, as it's difficult to define the term without reference to change and then define change without reference to time. Nonetheless, we can still answer questions *about* the time just fine. I don't have to wax philosophical about the meaning of time itself to know the meaning of my computer clock when it says "9:36", as it does now. In the same way we know evil when we see it. That's all we really need. It is the defiance of conscience or specific virtues. No reason to pick that apart. It's not about the semantics. It's about the *idea*. Comprehension and articulation are two very different things. These things can be fun to ponder idly but there really is no point to extended discussion about them. Where can it lead you? Pardon me if this point has already been said, but I haven't seen it yet. Anyway, I say that there is evil, but not in the way that most of us might see it. Evil is defined by the rest of society, those who see themselves as "good." The thing is that (with a few exceptions- I'm pretty sure murderers know what they are doing) in most cases of drastic "evil" (Hitler, Stalin, etc.) there is no evil at all. The instigators firmly believe that what they are doing is for the common good, and are working towards the goal of making a Utopian society. How can anyone condemn a man for doing what he believes is right? Another way to think of it is to say that Hitler condemns you just as much as you condemn Hitler. He killed so many people because he believed that all of those people were "evil" by his own definition. It all depends on perspective. However, as I said earlier, there IS evil. Evil is knowing that something is wrong and doing it anyway. Evil is the spite of all things considered good. A rapist is evil. Hands down. He knows that his actions are immoral, he sees life in the same way we do, and yet he chooses to continue his crimes. A murderer who kills even though he knows that what he/she is doing is wrong is evil. Another plausible definition of evil is to go by the Bible, and say that evil is the lack of resolve. One must be either hot or cold, but not lukewarm. This definition ties in to the others in that it says that if you see what you are doing as good, then even if the rest of humanity sees it as hot, or if the rest of humanity sees it as cold, it is good no matter what. Because you did what you think is the moral decision, no matter how society views it. A man could be the Devil's right hand man, but if he believed that what he was doing was for a just cause, he should not be condemned. He is simply doing what he believes will be good. Izzaiah, a man can very easily do actual wrong while *consciously* believing that he's doing right. It happens all the time. The two questions you have to ask are: 1. Does he believe that deep down in his heart or is it just what he's telling himself to excuse or rationalize his actions? (Self-deception is the fuel on which all vice burns.) 2. Is the reason for his being convinced that he's doing the right thing that he hasn't properly thought the matter through, and not because he has carefully weighed it mentally and ended up committing an honest intellectual mistake in the process? Killing may not always be murder, but it can be manslaughter. Izzaiah, a man can very easily do actual wrong while *consciously* believing that he's doing right. It happens all the time. Honestly? I don't believe that "evil" truly exists. "Evil" is perceived by the person seeing it. While we see Hitler as being evil, when Hitler set out in his campaign, he believed that he was helping the world by ridding it of these people that he considered not-people. It's as simple as that: there's really no need to go on a 1,000-word rant about evil. Think of it this way: you are "good", yes? You don't do mean things; you don't want to hurt people. Well, what if your perception were changed? What if you grew up thinking that Christians were evil and needed to be exterminated? In a position like Hitler, you too, would hunt and exterminate those of that religious, belief, following, whatever-you'd-like-to-call-it. But you would not consider it evil, would you? You would think that you were doing the right thing: exterminating the "evil." But there never was an evil, was there? Besides yourself, of course. So, I suppose I stand by the saying that "Evil is in the eye of the beholder." Think of it this way: you are "good", yes? You don't do mean things; you don't want to hurt people. In my opinion, to be "Evil" is to not understand basic emotions, and to do everything you want out of selfish ideals due to not understanding basic emotions, and not willing to show any mercy whatsoever, Nya~. |

Evil, hmmm, how to define it...? I think everyone has their own idea of what's evil. I just think evil overall is when someone does something and doesn't care if they hurt others. It's having a lack of conscience. That's just what I think but like I said, I think it's different for everyone. |

Evil is an absence of good. And what is Good is determined by what society believes is good (if society believes that helping out the less fortunate, then that is good. If they believe that murder is good, then murder is good...I guess.) This is my belief and yes I'm somewhat of a Sophists. Evil is an absence of good.
