I feel like I'm getting worse at games as I get older.  I use to rock the NES/SNES games when I was a kid.  Now I don't feel like I'm having the same success.  I wonder if time has slowed me down.

What do you guys think?  Do you get better or worse at video games with age?

It's more a matter of practice than age.

If you play games a lot, then you will get good at them. If you can't play, you will be less good.

Generally, as you get older you have less time.

Like leggy said if you play it a lot you'll get good at them. Also I think it's because of the reflexes that the games needs.

I'm not really getting worse at video games with age. I'm just having trouble with twitch reflexes, since I really don't have any. Tekken is a fighting game I can manage because it's slower. It requires tons of thought.

I can't manage Bullet Hell games at all, and I only know this because I am scared of looking at gameplay of them. I love shooters, and am not the best, but open world ones are somehow not that impossible for me. I'm 16, and it's really my change in tastes that has made me worse at some games. Games like the first Sly Cooper are still a breeze, strangely.

I've been a gamer since I was 4, and am not the best at any game, really. I find Devil May Cry games to be less troublesome, though. Maybe I just am better at a game if it gives me room to experiment. Tekken and Devil May Cry games seem to be those kinds of games. Tons of room for finding things out, and tons of room for laughing at crazy things like a bear fighting a kangaroo.

If a shooter is more of an open world kind of shooter, I can get good at that, as well. Borderlands and Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are examples of this. If it's something that isn't like the old school ID games, I will have trouble with such shooters unless it's the Bioshock games.

Now RPGs, I usually have no trouble with unless it's Demon's Souls, which I might need to see if I'm not skilled enough at that one yet to play a thief. I recently found a PC version of the first Turok game, and wow... I'm terrible at old school first person platforming.

Survival horror games are only difficult for one reason... Survival isn't my strong point. Love the Lost in Blue games, which are just straight up survive on island games, but I suck at them. I'm not terrible at Silent Hill 2, but Resident Evil 4... I still end up tangoing with that chainsaw guy when I shouldn't.

I do best at games that are open world, old school shooters, or are stuff like Devil May Cry and Tekken.

I find I'm worse at the action games than I used to be. Games that require fast reaction time and good aim and such.

I think I'm better at the RPG and strategy types since I've got more experience and more logic on my side than I used it.

However, in general I agree with the above posts. Play more and you'll get better.

It happened me, but in reverse... I'm getting better at them!

When I was kid I couldn't pass the 6th stage of Contra at the NES... Now, I'm able to get at Stage 8!

But, all that is related with the Practice... not with the Age.

Eddy88 : Actually, a lot of it has to do with memorization and reflexes. When it comes to the old games on the NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Genesis, and the like, nothing ever changed in the games oftentimes. You actually were finding yourself memorizing the levels without knowing it. Your reflexes could go together with what you had memorized, possibly. It's very possible that you played through those six levels of Contra so much, that you knew what was coming.

It might be because the games of today are so different from what they were during the NES/SNES era. The early games focused more on gameplay and how to make it addicting with limitations. Now, games are all about making it visually appealing, even if that means sacrificing gameplay and difficulty. If you try playing Super Mario Galaxy then Super Mario Bros., you'll see the big gap with difficulties in games of different time periods. There's just a different focus between the two.

legacyme3 : I think that it relies a lot on twitch reflexes too. Naturally those decrease with age.

I also think that it is more practice than anything else. I mean if you do not play the game for years and then play it again later unless you played it a lot the first time you will not be good at it right away. It is like muscle memory as sad as that is.

I agree with legacyme here. It's alot more of a practice that and age thing.
Although controllers have gotten a lot more advanced since the NES controller.Hence my mom is having trouble getting used to the Xbox 360 controller haha. PLus games in general have gotten more advanced.

I assume that once you play it when you're in your young days and then you play it when you're a lot older greatly changes things. Skill levels and ring rust can vary.

Well, no. It's not just age, many factors is relevant in this kind of stuff. Your maturity, your level of understanding, and your reading level, your reflexes, and your gaming experience as you grow up.

For example, I used to play Ocarina of Time when I was around 4 or 5, and I got all the way to Forest Temple, but I didn't really understand the game, so the puzzle of the temple made me rage-quit until I was 15. So far, I am now at Shadow Temple but I stopped progressing because I lost the save file, but that's a different story, lol.

As we get older our reaction time and reflexes do probably slow, the games od old were more of following a certain repetitive pattern and were much simpler. Newer games do indeed have a lot more going on in them than newer games and might seem like a lot more to learn such as gameplay and controls, wehereas older games required the use of less button actions. For instance if I hand the controller to my elder uncle he takes a little longer to get used to using all the actions let alone the eye hand coordination of dual analog sticks when using 1st person in games.

Though I must agree the bottom line is practice makes perfect. Reaction time and reflexes can be trained.

I notice it sometimes, but I think of it as just being more challenging which makes the game more fun... it's kinda like when I first started playing video games when I was around 5 - I wasn't too good at them but I got better, now it's the same way all over
