I'm very easy to anger, and probably have a temper problem, yet I have only broken two controllers in my life. Both were PS2 ones. One was a cheap Spongebob one, and the other was a cheap wireless controller that used infrared technology. I broke the Spongebob one because it was simply not of use, and the wireless controller was broken when I was playing games with my nephew. How did the wireless one break? I dropped it. I may pop it open since it's broke and all.

I probably almost broke a Genesis controller at some point when I was young and stupid enough to eat pancakes with syrup while gaming... I still am dumb enough to do that.
