A quick search says yes, Vikings would be the oldest.

yeah but cannons are only good if you can see the ninja.... and a ninja is stealthy and will attack when you least expect it!

You're probably thinking of the Boxer Rebellion. People often attribute abilities to ninjas that they just don't have (probably because of anime shows like naruto). Ninjas aren't invincible, they can't just appear behind you (unless you just didn't notice them, in which case it's your problem). They can't teleport and they aren't bulletproof. Stealth isn't the main advantage of a ninja as opposed to pirates. It's discipline. In a fair fight in an open field, a pistol would take down a ninja, easy.

That being said I would like to add that ninjas probably used a tactic simalar to one employed by commies in Korea.
All they have to do is lie down low and wait for youy to walk nearby ,and slash!! You have no legs.
