Pretty simple question: Are newer games becoming too complex?

I've found that a lot of newer games that I've considered playing I end up giving up on because the amount of information needed to play is overwhelming. I don't have the time or the patience to learn the game well enough to succeed at it.

And this isn't just console or PC games but also many games I've come across on the internet.

Does anyone else feel this way about newer games?

Oops wrong button, I meant to press some are.

It really depends on which games you take into account. If you consider some RPG games like Bowser's Inside Story, those add several unnecessary elements that make it hard to play. There are just too many different ways to play the game in different parts of the game. They try to make it unique, but it's too much to memorize.

Then there are games like Super Mario Galaxy that are way to simple for today's players. It's not that it's a single button press simple, but the puzzles are much too easy and there's hardly thinking involved with the rest of the game. Even Mario Galaxy 2 came with an Instructional DVD that told you how to play in 20 minutes. (see it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btR7R3rIctE)

Hell no!
I am sorry it is just I would like to have the game be way to complex then be way too simple. I think that most games are better the more complex they are.

Then there are games like Street Fighter very complex yet very simple.

Probably some RPGs have became much more complex than some of the earlier RPGs.
But when it comes to games like Mario and some FPS games, they always stay relatively simple, no matter when they were made. =P

I think the complexity has to do with are current age in gaming. We are in a technology age where people love tech stuff and applications. Think of phones back in the day along with games... now look where we are today. I find phones complex and packed with unnecessary stuff in it and games are similar. I don't like games with too much things in them that is why I stick to FPS, but many games are turning into iphones with applications.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy a complex game here and there. Especially when it comes to an RPG or something along those lines....

but what I hate is when a FPS or otherwise regular "action" game is made excessively complex just because it can be.... sometimes I just want to kill stuff and not have to think too much about anything else....

or if there are going to be features and upgrades and what not.... make them obvious so I don't have to research what something does before I pick it.

Complex is a relative word.

What is complex to you? A lot of people find these complex games easy to learn.

I personally think games these days have too many buttons that do too many things. In a platformer in the older days, you'd have arrows and a/b for jumping. What's wrong with that? Now it's press a to jump, press a again to double jump, press b to grab, x to jump off the wall, and y to use a grappling hook*

*I don't know any games that do that specifically but you get the idea.
