I have a goldfish from a carnival and it's been alive for like 8 years. I'm trying to figure out if it's a pet or a living room decoration. If it's a pet... then it's a pet that I can't pet. It's more of a nuisance than anything with the cleaning out of the aquarium and putting fresh water in all the time. I read somewhere that goldfish have a memory of 2 seconds.

I'll let him live out his days considering he already beat the odds since he came from a carnival. He might actually outlive me...

I consider fish to be Pets and not decorations
cause you feed them and care for them like any other pet
and some people actually love their pet fishes

honestly it makes me sick when people treat fishes like they are just decorations that can be replaced when fishes are living breathing creatures, yes they may not be the brightest animals but they are are still a living creature none the less

I think they're pets simply because you have to feed and care for them like other pets. They are a lot of work, and are easier to have die than probably any other pet.

Oops, never answered the original question. I don't have any pet fish myself (I used to), but my sister does and I can tell it's a lot of work by how often she has to clean the tank, change the water, and feed them.

its really hard to describe but people really shouldn't consider any

i would have to say a fish is a decoration i have had several fishes and they dont need much maintenance like when i had a turtle it ended up eating my fish and died for some reason speaking of fish i need to go feed mine

I couldn't take care of them well enough.

I think of them as pets, but they can be bought as decoration. I bet most people buy it as a pet, because it seems easier to take care of as a pet.

Most fish don't/can't form a relationship with you, but they are kept for enjoyment purposes. So I would definitely consider them a pet.

(Your situation is the same way someone can find looking after a kitten or dog annoying. If you don't want a pet then you probably won't enjoy caring for it.)

Wow lol, its kinda cool when they last long good job! They are both, but if I had to pick one it would be pet. Because if ur not one of those people who doesn't give ur (for ex) reptiles a bit a a stretch, or time to move about in your house, or specifically made area, then things like snakes are just kept in their cages, only to be cleaned and tended too. Plus there's the thing about loving your pets, of which a decoration does not receive in the same way.

I have a goldfish for almost 1,5 year. The weird thing about it, is that it lost his/her (I'm not sure about the gender,lol) gold color gradually, and now it's like a silver fish
As for the other question, I think that fishes are pets and not just decoration, because they have life. If they didn't, then I would consider them as decoration, probably.

It depends on the effort that goes into them. My step-father had a 100-gallon saltwater tank for years. He had everything in there from a lionfish to live coral. I think that once it becomes the level my step-dad's tank was it becomes pets/decoration. Decoration as in the entire set-up plus the fish were a living decoration, but a pet in the amount of time ad effort needed to keep everything alive and stable.
