I suppose I like the turn based style, as i am a more strategical mind, rather than trying to rely on skill/button mashing skills.

Best Keep your concience as clean as you can, or charma will come with a blade in it's hand. It will strike all those who seek to gain without giving, and spare all of those who are weak and forgiving.

Definitely gotta go with Besthda's style of RPG's. I like the fast paced kind of hack and slash. I love the Elder Scrolls and am really excited for Skyrim to come out. Good topic.
PS I also like original turn-based rpgs like FF

I prefer Turn based to button mashing, just because in my opinion it doesnt take skill to play a game button masher style. Also i like more strategy in battles.

I loved the classic FF style of battle. I loved being able to take my time while I'm eating or something rather than having to burn out my thumbs.

I prefer action RPG combat systems. I don't mind turn based, but just prefer having more control over a weapon. Rogue Galaxy's combat system is the best one to me. It had a good balance between waiting and attacking.

My favorite is the Super Mario RPG or the Final Fantasy 1-2 style. Sometimes I like it when I want to check to see what I want to use.

I have to say that I love both the old school turn based style as well as the active battle system like tales of eternia or symponia. Fantastic games in my book.

I love turn base, especially when you can control all of the characters, this way you can make sure no one uses TOO much MP.

Favorite though is the Xenogears battle systems. There are 3 non gear, gear, and fighter. Non gear involves you fighting without your gear you have 5 modes light (triangle), medium (square), hard (x), magic, and items. The first three you have to try different combos to gain new skills. Later you can save up ap points to make combos of skills!.

Gear fights act like non gear fights with one difference, you gain skills for your gear every time you gain a skill for the character, you can only use a skill once you see the number one in the circle on the left hand of the screen. Later on you can use more powerfull moves when your gear gets stronger and goes passed that number 1 I think it goes to number 3 where you get to use the most powerfull moves.

Ok fighter is in the championship arena where it's a 3D fighter game using your gears. It's toataly different from the other 2 fighting systems and you only controle one gear and not a party. You either use physical attacks or ether shots.

This is the most complex fighting system in an RPG I have ever witness and it's loads of fun~

I hate button mashing RPGs. I really love the turn based systems. Much of my life is attached to turn based Role Playing Games. In fact, the only RPG series that is not turn based that I enjoy is The Legend of Zelda series.

I really like the system used in the Shadow Hearts games.  It's turn-based, so you can take your time, but when you do an attack you have to use the "judgement ring," which involves hitting your buttons at just the right time.  If you mess up, you can get a weak attack, or miss altogether, but if you hit exactly the right spots you can have a huge combo attack.  In my mind, it's the best of both worlds; it gives you the time to think that comes with turn-based, but some of the excitement of the newer systems.

I always preferred turn based strategy for most games, but throw in an element of reflex/timing skill (Like the addition system in The Legend of Dragoon) . I don't mind games that uses the system like Final Fantasy 6, but I prefer turn based strategy. I guess a part of it is that I can rarely sit still and I hate being forced to sit through a long battle without getting up or even looking away from the screen. I guess turn-based strategy gives you some breathing room.

I really prefer a mix of both. Games where you're free to move about the field and attack, but what attacks you use and when take some strategy to plan out.

I prefer turn-based. That way you could figure out how to beat enemies and have it all come down to strategy.

I have two that are tied. I'll explain both of them:Valkyrie Profile: This game had a battle system where each team's party went at once. A teamate could attack and combo their attacks with other party members. Which could cause devastating damage, but the combo's had to be thought out, and required good precision and timing as well as planning the attacks (as each enemy is different to combo against) to maximize your damage. It requires some skill but not how fast you could press a button. The one tied with this is Demon's Soul's system. It was extremely realistic, and while characters weren't bouncing around and doing flips, one mistake could cost you a battle. Demon's Souls had probably the most balanced, and fair active combat system I have ever seen. I love the ability to do more then just attack, as there are several different ways to attack with each style of weapon -- and even with each style of shield; or both combined! The combo's a player could make up were flawless, and the counters a player could make with their equipment were flawless. The amount of thought that was required to not only go into your equipment build, but your stats based on your equipment needed to be very well thought out for PvP.

I loved the older Final Fantasy on GameBoy's battlestyle, it was really fun to try to predict the enemy's move, and get people to attack, defend, heal, use black magic, etc.

I also love in-game fighting like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, because you get to have your adrenaline pumping in a boss fight, and when you never see an enemy behind the character, you literally get a mini heart attack.

I would hands down say that button masher style RPGs is not RPG at all.  Those kind of games are pure skill with a few perks of advantages through the leveling that really does not make them much of an RPG at all but an action game.  RPG to me would be either turn based or time active.  Turn based as seen in the early years of Final Fantasy and Shining Force.  This being each character at a time or all at once to see a round play out.  Shining Force was more my favored game on turn based style because you did not just fight with a simple two or three characters, you fought your battle fields with a doze or more at times where you control nearly all of your side making the combat system much more in-depth.  The time active system is my newest favored style because it more accurately shows the difference in every one's speed.  By this I mean you need to wait for the action bar to fill to make your move as if that character in question is planning an attack method or searching for an opening to attack.  It is no wonder why RPG fans a like enjoy turn based and time active styles, to me it clearly shows the need for strategic thinking but still with a window of time to plan those critical attack plans and power ups.

Well my favorite is the Dragon Quest games take on the RPG system. I love these games because for some reason I can't stop playing. In close second is the Mario RPG's wher you correctly time each hit accordingly to time, this system keeps you on your toes.
