I never actually timed five miles, but I'm sure it would be under 30 min. I'm a decent Cross Country runner, and my record for 3.1 miles is 20:18.

Wow I'm impressed with your times. I'm sure it would take me close to 40 minutes or over. And I may be wrong but considering the fastest time ever for running one mile is about 3:45 than I think it would take olympians at least 21-22 minutes because of fatigue adding to their time in later laps.

it would probably take me between 50 minutes to an hour, because I can run a mile in nine minutes, but it took me twenty two minutes for two miles, and I've never done more than that.

I just want to clear it up for some people who don't quite know what 5 miles is.

To calculate a decent 5 mile time, take a 1 mile time. (My 1 mile is just under 5 minutes), and instead of multiplying by 5 to get your 5 mile, multiply by around (based on time deviation) 6. When you multiply by 6, you are accounting for the wear and tear and fatigue.

I will make a mini chart for you

Mile time --------- 5 mile time est.
5 minutes --------- 30 minutes
6 minutes --------- 35 minutes
7 minutes --------- 40 minutes
8 minutes --------- 45 minutes
9 minutes --------- 50 minutes
10 minutes -------- 1 hour

This seems to be a pretty decent way of keeping track for me for now. Note- some of you are track runners. If you don't run distance, and you have never run more than 3 miles in a race, your times will be worse, because you have never tried 5 miles.

I'm a runner. I run marathons and other races a lot. Saying 30-40 minutes is average and 40+ is slower is completely wrong.

If you run a 30 minute 5 mile, you're at near-sprint for half an hour. You're running 10 miles an hour. That's moving fast. That's five six-minute miles in a row. Even 40 minutes for five miles is 8 minute miles. That's still very quick and I don't think I would call that 'average.'

warmaker :

Matter of opinion I guess?

For me 30-40 is what I've been able to do since high school, starting in the high 30s, I broke 30 last year.

I feel like most people can run 30-40 minutes, hence why I say average.

I don't really know many people that run any faster than 27, or any slower than 43.

legacyme3 : For you, yes, it makes sense. You're a runner and you hang out with other runners. Of course 30-40 is a decent time and not too impressive. You're young, too, and you don't have many friends hitting their late 20s, early 30s, with kids and long hours at jobs and so forth.

2/3 of the American population can't even walk three miles without getting out of breath because of all the obesity. I know a ton of people who aren't in shape and can't run one mile in 15 minutes, much less complete 5 miles in a row. People get into or out of college and they lose their fitness if they had it in the first place. I'm one of the few who's in great shape.

I mean it just doesn't seem like an average number for the average american.

warmaker : I see your point now. I can't edit the poll, but if I could I would change it slightly. Either way, I expect that most of the people that would reply to this would be people who are younger, in their teen years. I know a few teens who can run forever, so when I made the poll it was with the assumption that most of the members of this board had a little athletic background.

When I was in HS I ran the mile in 5.15 for my PR. My 3 mile PR was 18.42. We never timed our 5 mile runs, but I'm not a fast distance runner. I have two modes for running, for sports and track I have a bit of a different stride and push, heavy on the toe push at the end of the stride. For long distance my stride is even and more flowing. I'm trying to get back in shape right now, having turned 33 in September is making that tougher as well as living in the mountains. I ran a 6.48 the last time I timed a mile. I know that generally speaking for my case I add a half minute to the average mile time for every mile added to the race. But my current shape probably has that formula inaccurate.

My top speed is 18 MPH, which is over 1/8 mile. My 1/4 mile is only at 15 MPH. Edit: after going to a track, this years old data which was made off road is no longer valid.New top speed: just over 20 wearing skating shoes and feeling rather poorly.

When I was in high school, I could do the 5 mile in the 27 minute area. Now, I am at 29:53 (fastest, not normal). I have slowed down since high school because my running is more for enjoyment rather than competition.

Someone70 :

You should give it a shot sometime. It's GREAT for your health.

Update for myself, the other day I ran 3 miles in about 18 minutes. I'm slowing down without steady competition, although I'm still not slow by any means.
