Persona 4 has been called the last great game for the Playstation 2 and I figured I would do a review.
Persona 4 is the fifth, non-port, Persona released. There were two versions of Persona 2 released, one only in Japan. It continues the tradition of Persona 3 quite nicely while improving on it by a large margin
Let me start with the
Story: 9/10.
There might be some spoilers here so watch out. This version of Persona starts out like the last one, with the MC transferring to a new school. He moves in with his Uncle Dojimo and his adorable daughter, Nanako. The story goes on somewhat predictably from there, meeting friends, blah blah. But the story soon takes a dark twist. After the MC meets a few of his classmates, SOMEONE TURNS UP DEAD. Now we are not talking a random shooting or anything... The deceased is found hanging from an antennae in broad daylight. About this time a weird channel has started showing up on TV, if you look at the TV while it is off at 12 midnight. One night the MC is watching like he told his friends he would and is taken over by a strange compulsion to reach out to the set... His hand goes through. Fast forward as the MC, along with Chie and Yosuke, decide to explore the TV world after a fellow student ends up dead as well. The story soon convolutes as they MC and his friends go deeper into the unfolding plot.
Gameplay: 9/10
This is a very well put together game, as they basically corrected any problems with P3. The color scheme is yellow and the game is proud of it. Everything is just put together, menus easier to use... Big plus for fans of the game is the addition of the [] (square) button to move around the town. makes traveling much easier, even though no single area is overly large. Another big point for this game... YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR TEAMMATES! In P3 you had little control over your teammates during battle. Not so in this game. You can either put everyone on automate, and the AI is much better this game, or you can set everyone to manual which is just right for boss battles. The aforementioned fact was brought up because this game is unforgiving! If you are of the new generation of gamers not used to difficult games, pick this up for a challenge. If you are an old-school gamer, you still have your work cut out. I forgot to mention there IS NO TARTARUS. There are multiple dungeons, each with their own look and music. It goes from a medieval castle to a dungeon that looks like something right out of an 8 bit video game.
Graphics: 9/10
As I already wrote, the color scheme is yellow. But there are more of the 3D models with 2D portraits doing the talking that we all love! But seriously, the portraits are done much better this game. You really find yourself looking to see the characters laugh and smile just to see the expressions, the girls in the game look cute when they blush and when they are angry... The guys look intimidating when they get angry... Just watch out for Mara! Play the game and find out what I mean.
Music and sounds: 10/10
Yes, the ever argued music section. Let me write straight out that the music in this game is greatly different than P3. It has more of a "J-pop" feel to it. The opening track is called "Pursuing My True Self" and is rather catchy. As I mentioned before, there are multiple dungeons and each have their own track. And yes, it does come with an OST. Only thing wrong with it is that it is incomplete and they packaged the rest of the songs with a "Social Link Pack" on sale online. Needless to say those were quickly bought and now are being sold for $200!!!!!!! But if you need the extra songs that much, download them. (Only do this if you own the game, please.) There is one problem I have with the sounds though... Teddie. You will get it once you get to him, but is that noise so annoying I don't know what!
Overall average: 10/10
I really would say this is one of the best RPGS ever put out, and not just from a fan standpoint. if you want a game spit-polished almost to perfection, get this game. You will find yourself loving this story and characters without even knowing it. This is just one of the best experiences I've ever had playing a game.
