The 1970s were a massive turning point for rock music, as the innovations left behind by artists such as The Beatles, The Doors, and many other artists that were seen as the proto versions of the stylings that followed them.

Most people remember the 1970s for being the heyday of disco, a genre derived from funk and soul that focused heavily on four-on-the-floor beats that focused primarily on piano, horns, and synthesizers. It's also seen as the age of hippies, and the first decade where classical was not a dominant genre, where it was led by a genre movement known as third stream, which aimed at fusing elements of jazz and classical in new and unheard ways.

But that's not the only thing that happened that decade, we also saw the beginnings of glam rock, hard rock, blues rock, metal, raggae, and the continued evolution of funk, soul, R&B, and jazz.

The two most major changes in music in my eyes were the invention of hip hop, and the experimental German music scene with genres such as eurodance, krautrock, and synthpop.

Hip hop began with house parties and local clubs that played soul and disco. At first, it was no more than a hired announcer who would guide people through the party with track listings, a stand-up comedy style of working a crowd, and charisma. The personality of the host, or emcee, would become more popular than the parties themselves. As time progressed, Grandmaster Flash invented a new way of playing records using instinctual marks in the grooves of two records on a crossfader. These marks on the record would indicate the point at which "the get down" occurred, or the part of a disco or soul song that broke down the essential components of the instrumental to create room for the emcee to entertain the crowd with rhythmic rhymes that reflected their personality, creating a new form of vocal intonation in music known as rapping. The rhyming over the disco instrumental proved infectious to the small crowds, and immediately created a cult sensation within these smaller communities. Seeing the artwork as something to be experienced in person, many emcees were extremely reluctant to having their rhymes recorded, as they felt it would take away from the ninja-like mystique of the emcee which would always create huge hype at parties. This changed when the Sugarhill Gang released Rapper's Delight, which was the first recorded rap song to reach a chart, proving that you can record and transmit the energy of these parties without losing its magic.

In the world of german music, there was a ton of innovation through namely krautrock and synthpop. A lot of the common threads we see in modern progressive music and the guitar work / vocals that were present in bands such as Neu! or Can were incredibly influential. In the world of synthpop, we had Kraftwerk, a band of electronic musicians that you could easily see as the progenitors to Daft Punk's essence. With simple synthesized rhythms and catchy, mostly spoken lyrics, the band aimed to tell a story of computer led dystopia through melancholic electronic vibes.

What was your favorite music from the 1970s? Are you a big fan of the music that came from this decade over any others? It can be a song, band, artist, album, or a handful of tracks that you most enjoyed from this era.

For me, I have several favorite records from this decade, so many that it's almost best to make a top 10.

10. Apostrophe by Frank Zappa
9. Close to the Edge by Yes
8. Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
7. Animals by Pink Floyd
6. Transformer by Lou Reed
5. Pieces of a Man by Gil Scott Heron
4. Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
3. Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder
2. B***** Brew by Miles Davis
1.The Man Machine by Kraftwerk

I don't know of many songs from the 1970s however I do still have a favorite which is Free Ride by Edgar Winter Group which I probably would have never heard if not for Cars the video game lol but I still enjoy it enough to still keep it on playlists.

Edit while I was finding 80s songs I enjoyed I found a lot of 70s songs that I thought were from the 80s so I figured I should come and amend this post to mention those songs. First off I have to mention Wheel in the Sky I thought for sure it was from the 80s but I was dead wrong so oops.

More Than a Feeling is a song my grandpa used to listen to a lot when I was young.

Renegade is my favorite song from the 70s I found one day when I was adding songs to a playlist and it showed up in my recommended and when I heard it and remembered it I instantly added it.

September makes me think of one of the Dragon Ball Z Budokai games songs which plagiarized the song but without it, I don't know if I would know of September.

Finally, I have to mention Y.M.C.A. the classic song that has to be played every dance.

The 1970's had some very good music. Disco is the most famous music from the 1970's. But in the 1970's we saw soft rock, which got started in the late 60's, become very popular. The 1970's also started punk rock especially in the late 1970's.

I really like the 1970's for its music.

For Soft Rock As I have posted in some of the earlier music posts. My favorite soft rock artists is Chicago. Other soft rock artists. A lot of other soft rock artists were one hit wonders.

To be honest, there's something that's usually so tranquil about 70s music that makes it really standout and yet somehow Canada managed to pump out many acts and artists in the 70s sure most of them were probably one hit wonders but at least they're nice to listen to including this track (ah crap it looks you this will have to be watched on Youtube)

It brings back memories of a radio station I used to listen to, KY58 shut down nearly 20 years ago, (I don't know if it had anything to do with CTV completely taking over in 2004, but then again if it didn't shut down I wouldn't have known how awesome Lite music can be, we don't currently have a lite music station in Winnipeg right now and I have been listening to an oldies station that has a major variety of content....nothing makes me feel older than hearing the Backstreet boys on an oldies station)

I think I'm a lot more akin to stuff from the 80's because it seems like very few song I still happen to listen to from time to time are from that time period, but I still got a good handful of things that are on my mind every time I go back to that era.

Rock 'n Me by the Steve Miller Band
Dancing Queen by Abba
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
Rock with You by Micheal Jackson
Mr. Blue Sky by ELO

I know that's a pretty small list and all but I typically think of a lot more 80's songs from the top of my head rather then 70's since that's what I grew up with when i was younger haha

This is a good track from the 70s, wish I heard this more than Bette Davis eyes on the radio station I had been listening to for quite some time

Also I post this on another forum every time the Jets score their fifth goal in a game (but with more than 5 minutes to go because...the song is called More More More) at least one person on that site was able to figure out the point of why I was posting it

There’s a bunch of great classics from the 70s I can’t forget. With “Don’t let me be Misunderstood” by The Animals, “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson (1979) and something more 70s soul music like “Ashley’s Roachclip” by The Soul Searchers, I feel like one of the songs I’ve listened to almost every time I think of the 70s is “Oh Honey” by Delegation.

This song is always a good favorite of mine with its mellow vocals and instruments and it just keeps me at peace at times. A classic for sure

Class Game there were a lot of Canadian Bands that churned out music from the 1970's. Some where one hit wonders while others had multiple top 40 hits on the US Charts.

Canadian Bands that had Multiple Hits.

The Guess Who- Yeah the got their start in the 1960's but they had a lot of hits in the 1970's. They had two number one hits American Woman and No Sugar Tonight in 1970/1971. Other songs went top 10.

Bachman Turner Overdrive-This was started by one of the brothers to one of the Guess Who Members. They had a lot of top 40 hits in the 1970's.

Gordon Lightfoot- One of the best known Canadian Singers. What he did not sing he wrote. He had a lot of hits from 1971-1978.

One Hit Wonders

Skylark- This soul band had a top ten hit with she is like a flower. Yet they never had another hit.

Terry Jacks- He had a number 1 hit with Season's in the Sun but he never had another top 40 hit in the USA.
