With today's Switch update, I noticed that there was a major change to Nintendo Switch Online, and that got me thinking. Are we going to get Game Boy games on the console? We already have NES and SNES games so why not Game Boy? I mean we already had the option to play the original Pokemon games on the 3DS, so why not add those games to the Switch as well?

I was thinking about this because of the way that the new Switch Online page is set up and because of a couple other people who were talking about it.

For starters, Online now has an icon at the bottom of the home screen all the way on the left. I do think that normally, Online is a big deal just because of the games that are already available, but I don't believe that Nintendo would give Online its own icon if it wasn't going to be getting a big overhaul in the future.

In addition to that, the way that the Game Archives looks really makes it appear like there will be a new console added soon. Just like how I don't think Nintendo would give Online its own icon without a reason, I don't think they would have separated the consoles and given them their own tabs when there's only two to choose from, unless they were going to add more.

What do I personally think? I think the best route for Nintendo to take would be to add the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color, maybe even the Advance too. But not all the games, just the Pokemon ones to coincide with Pokemon anniversary next year. That way people can play more, if not all of the old Pokemon games on the Switch, and Nintnedo would have a foundation to add even more Game Boy games.

I wish they would do N64, that's the one that's actually hard to emulate. Though if they ever pull up Gameboy games, I hope they release something previously cancelled like Star Fox 2, that was probably the highlight of the SNES. If they do GB, maybe they could bring GBA over and finally release Mother 3?

I completely agree that they should bring out Pokémon, but I wasn't exactly impressed with getting Red and Blue again, I want FireRed.

pennylessz : If they do GBA games for Nintendo Online, I doubt Pokemon games would be in the launch library, but they would be added later on. It would be a waste from a marketing standpoint to launch GBA Online and the big titles together. If they launch GBA Online with a handful of titles and then launch Pokemon FiredRed and Emerald, and other big GBA titles like a month later, the hype and momentum would just keep going.

I hadn't really considered the possibility that instead of N64 the next console we could be getting is the Gameboy but when you say that it makes perfect sense and is rather disappointing at least for me I can't really think of any OG Gameboy games I wanna play that I haven't.

SonicOlmstead : Well, with all the rumors of Nintendo stopping 3DS eshop support, it makes even more sense now for the original Gameboy games. If access to 3DS eshop is cut, nobody will be able to buy the originals anymore, so adding those to the Switch would work.
