Final Fantasy II is one of those games that a lot of people seem to dislike, for ok reasons which I totally am ok with. However I fall into the camp that enjoys the game, quite a bit actually, and has a sentimental value due to the first RPG I ever played being Final Fantasy I/II Dawn of Souls.

A few moments ago I found a video that really showed some good things about the game and might allow people to perhaps give the game a shot that most otherwise wouldn't have otherwise, it's also quite enjoyable.

Boured : having tried a few final fantasy games for the super nintendo and the psx as well as the nes version that I own a copy of and have played a bit on my nintendo there are two things that I personally don,t like about the game one is that I noticed that for the psx and super nintendo versions they seem to go through a long introduction before the game starts and the second part is when you go to fight an enemy instead of just shooting it or killing the enemy with a weapon you have to command each member of your party which enemy to fight if there is more than one and what to do as in whether to kill the enemy with a weapon or use a magic spell on him and while I have never actually played any of them to the very end aside from these two things final fantasy does seem to be a good game which looks like it would probably require a lot of time to complete

In all honesty, II is actually one of the my favourites of the series and it's more or less because of how different the leveling system was enacted. I mean maybe it's because I'm the kind of person that enjoys grinding in video games. But maybe it's the fact that I also enjoyed the storyline and the characters themselves. I love and honestly respect the leveling system so much because it made more sense to me than the characters just becoming easily strong in every stat or proficiency just by leveling up once, instead II forces you to have to put in the time to show that you're working hard for the proficiency or that stat. I can't tell you how badly I wished lots of other rpgs did that after I first beat the game, and I was able to find many that do have similar systems to stat and proficiency growth.

But I'm glad to learn that someone else does appreciate this gem for what it is.

I played it, and I had some issues with it. First one being that you should definitely pick up the GBA or PSP versions if you're going to play the game at all, because the NES version is even more unbalanced.

Other issues I had included major game mechanics not being explained (it took until the final dungeon before I found out that buff spells actually spread their effects like healing and damage magic across multiple targets, and I never found out how evasion worked until after I beat the game), a plot with potential that spends all its time following boring protagonists, and stat increases that feel random and unrewarding. There's never a guarantee, even if you lose almost all your HP or MP in one battle, that you'll get any useful stat increase - and even if you do, it's very little compared to how much you have to use to get it. For the record, though, it was better balanced than FF3 - I got through without needing savestates for the final dungeon because you're allowed to save.
