Going to throw a vote at a very recent favorite of mine, Runerigus. It’s the new evolution of Yamask, well, the galarian Yamask at least. I guess it’s a counterpart to Cofagrigus which was already one of the cooler Ghost types out there. It has a unique evolution method, requiring so many weird steps it’s one of the only ones I’ve ever had to google lmao. Upon taking at least 49 damage in one fight without having Yamask faint, you have to run under this random rock formation somewhere in the Wild Area. How any kid without internet is supposed to figure that one out is beyond me. Maybe an NPC tells you about it? I can’t remember talking to one.
Appearance wise it’s a perfect continuation of its pre evolution. I love how it builds off of the little stone slab Yamask was holding onto. Through evolution it managed to obtain the remaining slabs to form a cool demon looking wall painting, sticking them onto its body and using them as some made up coffin like its counterpart Cofagrigus. While I’ve seen some people hate on its shiny form I think it’s one of the best ones they’ve ever made. It copies Cofagrigus’ shiny color scheme and makes it look badass. It kind of looks like the original, clean version of the dusty mural painting it normally has. The pink used really makes the painting jump to life.
It also has a cool typing in Ground/Ghost, something it shares with the Golurk and Palossand lines. Although I think Runerigus makes it work the most. It does have 5 weaknesses in Ghost, Dark, Grass, Water and Ice, meaning its types don’t balance each other out in any way, but it can somewhat dance around this with its stats. It has 3 key immunities to Normal, Fighting and Electric as well as 3 resistances, one being the very important Rock type. It might be one of the best stealth rockers in the game, being able to reliably switch in on them due to its resistance, being able to set them up and being able to block Rapid Spin thanks to its Ghost typing.
Stats wise it’s very similar to Cofagrigus. Incredible physical bulk with respectable special bulk and terrible speed. In fact the only change from Cofagrigus are its offensive stats, which are swapped around making it more of a physical attacker.
It has a unique ability in Wandering Spirit. It’s almost identical to Mummy, Cofagrigus’ ability, however instead of just overriding your opponent’s ability with this ability it swaps them around. This can make a huge difference as you can essentially steal your opponents ability upon taking contact damage. Barring you get hit by a Slaking or something that’s always a net positive for Runerigus.
Thankfully it still has access to Trick Room, allowing its terrible 30 base speed to suddenly become blazing fast. With strong stabs in Earthquake and Poltergeist and great coverage in something like Body Press, using its base 145 defense to attack with, it will have a solid performance in almost any battle. It personally carried me through some rough spots in Sword/Shield, including soloing Eternamax Eternatus for one.
Overall I think Runerigus is one of the best new designs they introduced and I love that they’re giving Gen 5 the love it always deserved.
