I love both equally but at this moment I chose MMORPG. Nothing like grouping with strangers on EverQuest.

I picked RPGs. I'm truthfully not that fond of MMORPGs. My friend tried to get me to try WoW and I did, it wasn't that great. Would much rather play regular RPGs like Earthbound and Final Fantasy.

RPGs are significantly better.

MMORPGs are what happens when a developer wants money, doesn't want to bother writing up a story, and wants to make people think they're having fun by allowing people to play the game with one another. Other than that, most MMORPGs are empty, repetitive grindfests that require no skill and have absolutely no unique or enthralling content.

At least that's how I see it, anyway.

RPGs are definitely better. I find the MMORPG can get boring once the leveling starts to slow down. You end up redoing the same quests for the most part and you can end up getting annoyed by random people asking to party with you when you want to work by yourself. It can be tiresome.

RPG cos there IS NO SUCH THING AS AN MMORPG

How can that be ? You ask, well let me explain.

An RPG must contain 3 elements.

1. Character development & progression: This is where you as the player put yourself in the shoes of your character and develop it as you will and the world around you should respond to that, but the same goes for named NPC´s within the RPG, if you kill a key figure and it respawns in 5 minutes and you kill it again and again that character is not progressing, it doesn´t die even if you kill it. What about that wolf I killed, it´s back in the RPG I´m playing ? Well the wolf is not a key character, if it has a name besides its generic name then it´s important and when you kill it, it should stay dead unless ressurected also if a dwarf hates orcs and you rolled an orc the dwarf should hate you initially as much as any other orc, that is his disposition towards you should be less than towards other players that are perhaps dwarfs themselves.

2. Interactive storyline: So you entered the dark fortress and slew the evil overlord freeing the nearby town from its evil grasp ? Great! You´ve saved the day and nothing can change it and it´s time to celebra... did you say the same evil overlord spawned and another person came to kill it and that person freed the village as well ? And the chief also gave him his heirloom staff passed down through generations of village chiefs! NO! That is not what you call an interactive storyline! In this case "MMORPG´s" lack the element of Interactive storyline as much as they lack the element of character development every-time those cripples you healed becomes cripples again within the next 5 minutes.

3. Stats: Yes, the mother of all decisions (RNG or the dice is the father), the status or the stats. This is not mario where you jump on something and it dies, or if it doesn´t die the first time it takes the same amount of damage be it that you are playing the slim Luigi or the fat Mario. No, a RPG will grant big burly character types generally more strength than small slender figures (generally not always) and more charisma to the outspoken human than the dumb goblin (again, generally). Unless ofc you raise your stats, however this is in many MMORPG´s (I like to call them MMOAG´s or Massively Multi-played Action Games) but a game does not count as an RPG if it only has one of the three elements it needs, much like a good cake is not a cake if you only dumped a bunch of flour on the table and declared it a cake.

What about dungeons and dragons ?

D&D session and generally not online, and that D&D online game doesn´t have the elements an RPG needs, doesn´t even have the immersion that adds to the quality of a good RPG.

What if you play a D&D session online ?

... crap, well you lose a lot of immersion since while it´s possible to roleplay in first person online it doesn´t come out as well as when around the table where you can voice act, and even with microphones it´s still not the same and... well fu, so it is possible but you don´t get a "massive" crowd together online to play D&D without some people you don´t know and such gatherings of people tend to have people that break the immersion and don´t play right, trolls if you will call them so.

So in conclusion, I can be happy with a MORPG (Multi-played Online Role Playing Game) but not MMORPG, and after all I´ve never seen a online game where I could immerse myself as well as with RPG´s such as the Elderscrolls series and alike game.

The only MMORPG I played was Ultima Online some years back, but really just didn't have that much time. I prefer just playing RPG's in my own time here and there.

I'm a huge fan of RPGs because you don't have idiot 11 year olds who don't know what they are doing in the gameplay. Whereas MMO's have the noob's that make me cringe.

RPGs. They don't rely on Player to Player interaction to be good, which is good because Player to Player is often bad.

RPG. There story is usually better, obviously more character development, and no need for nerfed combat. I also enjoy not paying forever for a game I buy, but that's a bonus.

MMORPG. RPGs are fun, but it take skill to be able to group up with random people and take down enemies and quests that cant be completed alone. Take WoW for example. Its relatively easy to play at the start, but get harder as you go on. Your not guaranteed to get what you want when you want it, so there's always the mystery of what lies ahead for you. WoW has an in-depth story and background, but unlike most RPGs, it doesnt force you to learn or experience it. The world is constantly changed through patches and new expansions, so theres always new experiences for you in the game. WoW also not only lets you choose a class, but how you play the class. Just because your a priest in WoW doesn't mean you have to heal, like a White Mage In FF who cant really hurt anything but undead.

To be honest, the only reason I can see why someone would hate a MMORPG is because they got owned by a vetaren player, or because they dont start out powerful and with all sort of help at the begining like regular RPGs.

As for paying monthly fees, $15/month isnt that bad compaed to a new console RPG costing %50+.

What's the point of playing a game(other than The Game, of course) IF YOU CAN NEVER WIN?!?!?! For a guy who loves to do things all the way through, these kind of things drive me INSAAAAANE!

I like both types; they both have their ups & downs.
MMORPGs are usually fun for a while until you hit the point where progress is really slow and repetitive. I stopped playing Runescape once I beat all the free quests. After the quests, it was all just training levels, which got old pretty fast.
Any RPG worth playing has a great story, which I really enjoy. Once it's over, it's over; they're not indefinitely playable like MMORPGs.
I like both types; they both have their ups & downs.
