Barathemos : I am absolutely not a hater of The Simpsons. I loved the first 8 seasons and remember them extremely fondly. I'd say the humor in the first few seasons is what shaped my sense of humor.

Let's take a look at each of these shows:

Stranger Things - I wasn't a big fan of the third season but I can't deny that it had one of the most satisfying conclusions of the series. Not many people complain about the quality of this show. The fourth season and the intricate storyline and lore were extremely well done and I'd say the last few episodes are historic for television in terms of quality. If Season 5 ends well, Stranger Things might be one of the greatest shows ever created.

Breaking Bad - This is my favorite TV show. I've watched it and it's spinoff countless times. There is hardly a soul online that will claim there's a truly bad episode of the show, much less a full season. It's paced in a slower, more investing way, and it's full of symbolism and deeper meaning as it turns a humble, lovable man into a brutal drug lord. It has no faults and the final season was one of the greatest conclusions to any form of media.

Dexter - The first four seasons of this show were of unspeakably good quality, and the ending to the fourth season is probably one of the greatest moments in television history. However, after that, Clyde Phillips, who was a creative force of a showrunner, was let go in favor of a new behind the scenes lead that didn't understand the character of Dexter, who was supposed to be a conflicted anti-hero that was supposed to go through personal growth as he continues his "vigilante" work and the show was previously always questioning the ethics of what he does, with questions like "He kills bad people, but he still kills which is bad" being core to the franchise. Instead, the new team assumed the show's popularity came from the grandiosity of its villains, and decided to make it more of a "Dexter hunting monsters" show than a thoughtful look at a very interesting and conflicted character. The final season was a mess, and the ending is something I resent far more than the way "How I Met Your Mother" ended. Last year, we got a "real" final season from Clyde Phillips and it was meant to carry the story on from its ending in season 4, while respecting the choices and direction made in the seasons that followed. It had one of the greatest villains in the series and one of the most interesting, dark looks at Dexter that satisfied the arc and meaning behind the series, but unfortunately it outdid the 8th season in terms of an awful ending, and while it was a more satisfying ending, it felt really forced, way too convenient, and there were a lot of aspects that felt out of character.

The Simpsons - The lead writing staff left at the end of season 8, and after it ended, the show left its focus on clever slapstick and hilarious subversions of expectations for more common sitcom themes, predictable storylines, and a much more laid back method of delivering humor. While there were definitely some great episodes in the following 25+ seasons, they were nowhere near the quality of the first 8, and honestly they aren't extremely worth watching.

South Park - This is a show that has had so many seasons, and very few weak ones. The show has always had a great format. Instead of following a traditional story format, South Park episodes follow "______ happens, but then ______ happens because of _______" which is still something not too many comedy shows do. This constant 'but _____' instead of "and then ______" trend always leads to some sort of benign or small issue to become something ridiculous and hyperbolic, which has continued to work across each season. I will have to say though, they didn't anticipate Trump winning the election and had to sacrifice the character of Mr. Garrison to the joke as a result of the real world being wackier than satire, which lead to the school the protagonists go to becoming a lot different, with some characters I'm not particularly fond of. I think that was when the quality started to dip, but I know that Matt and Trey stopped really caring about new episodes a couple of years ago. It's still a pretty consistent show that continues to be hilarious a good deal of the time.
