I want to make something clear, Vizzed has been screwing with me lately, I get on this page, make a review, I submit it, I get told I wasn't logged in. It takes me to a new page, I'm already logged in. The review is gone. Either make a post recovery system or FIX YOUR-

Ok, so to recap I got this game because of the Nintendo gold points, I got Nefarious thinking it would be a short and sweet game, and lo and behold, it was, but after having actually played the game I felt like I needed to represent it better. This was one of those home brewed Kickstarter projects to make a game, and for what Josh Hano and co. had at their disposal, Nefarious came out nice enough. I also learned they made a graphic novel thing, I WOULD be reading that now but alas, this is the third long post that got refused by the site in the past week. I don't even have the same momentum going, what did I write again? Here we go, *ahem*...

The entire premise of Nefarious is this, you know the classic video game plots right? A hero and villain, villain steals a princess, or makes a robot army, seeks to retrieve a bunch of doodads to become powerful and take over the world right? That's you! Queue the Wander over Yonder song! In fact, this game revolves around these old tropes, and how characters respond to them. Take the very first level, you are Crow, a mechanical mastermind, once again kidnapping princess Mayapple, princess of a metropolitan city at that, and making his escape through the city while Mack, the generic hero, follows suit. By the end of the level, what are you expecting? No really, stop and think for a moment, what is going to be the outcome? Now look it up or buy the game because I can tell you whatever you were thinking just now is probably inaccurate. From then on the game sets up how the standards work, each kingdom has a hero and villain, they spar regularly, the villain gets thwarted, rinse and repeat, but Crow wants to be different. Since every princess in the world emits a magical force (why else do you think they're important?) Crow wants to collect five and use them to power his doomsday device and take over the world, for real.

Crow, being the tech savvy villain, makes use of a cyborg arm and projectile explosives, which can be upgraded and reconfigured in different ways. Maybe instead of grenades you would like missiles, or choose between having longer range on your punch or having THREE FISTS!? Truly we are a force to be reckoned with. Common game mechanics are using either your grenades or specifically positioned grenade depots to jump around on, and every now and then the basics are mixed up, like having your grenades take on a new property to let you create platforms. Also, did I mention this is a game where you play the video game villain? How about instead of surpassing insurmountable odds against towering foes again, and again, yeah, how about we just get to pilot the giant robot and pound vikings into a pulp? I'd like seeing the variation of Eggman who actually knows how to pilot the machines he makes. Although, granted, the game isn't quite that hard, usually the hard part is platforming or surmounting traps, you know, the stuff you can't blow up. When the game takes a turn though, I'd prefer not getting stuck learning how to drive a car or having to use tilt controls to move a ball down a course, unlike whatever it is those heroes are into these days.

So hopefully you get the grasp on how the game plays, it's short, simple, but fun. Now let me tell you more about all the other stuff that lets me enjoy the game and that fill out several categories. Based on the main idea of the game, you can everything to be satirical convention or a twist on expectations. The banter between characters is almost always funny, like to the extent I feel bad knowing I might have missed something. The art style is nice too, though I must address there's actually two of them. Yeah, I'm not sure what the development cycle was, but I think they got someone else to do some promotional art and dialogue boxes. Guess which one I prefer though. The sound design is also nice, either a conventional video game sounding track, or yaks singing a national anthem which is actually a really long name. I never thought that would be something I praise in a video game, and that's the power of this game's script. To recap, not a long game, has a few collectibles here and there, not exactly hard, fun to blaze through, funny to read through, I enjoyed it, and can totally recommend it for the price. I really do wish the team behind this game would go on to make more projects, I feel like they could make something really good given the time and resources. Imagine Nefarious, but with more polish and flesh. Dang son...

Davideo7 :

Mecha has run into an issue that he describes at the beginning of his thread that I forgot I have also run into many times in the past. Perhaps one of you could look into it and potentially fix the issue?

This is a good review, I've never heard of this game before and you really laid it out on table for me to understand what this game is even about. Hopefully that site glitch can get fixed soon because I remember that happening to me a lot in the past. Save your reviews and guides in Google Docs or something before you post them until the glitch can get fixed, that way you won't have to retype everything again.

I never heard of this game but I love Kickstarter games. I myself helped fund probably close to 10 games (some of which turned out cool)

It's always cool seeing these people who aren't official developers turn things into a great game.

I might want to give this game a shot if I ever get a chance, how many coins did it cost?

The only thing I would suggest for this review is cutting down on paragraph length.

Mecha Leo : I just posted a review and it worked for me. Maybe I am doing it wrong? I went to game page, clicked on write review and it worked. Maybe it happens with certain games?

iirc Matthew Taranto (of Brawl in the Family fame) is the one who did the art on this game.

JigSaw : I think it's just random chance. I didn't spend too long on the review, but it may have to do with opening another Vizzed tab to check up with something.
Lexatom : I typically do, but I ran into an issue with the layout I'm using messing up the formatting.
zanderlex : It was 5 dollars, I paid 27 cents for it. I don't know if the gold points are replacement funds or if I basically got the game for less than 90% of its value. Either way, I'd pay these guys again.
supernerd117 : ... uh, which art? Wait no, I've totally seen this guy's work before. Makes enough sense.

Mecha Leo : I checked the eshop and $5 IS the sale price because the game costs $15 so you got an amazing deal.

This was a decent review. I've actually seen this game before, and it's weird to hear that you thought the game wasn't that hard - I watched a friend play through the entire thing, and he actually had quite a bit of trouble with it, especially one particular level and one particular boss. I honestly didn't even notice the two art styles were different, and I thought they were both about as good as the other. As long as it's not the exact same art style that 80% of indie games use, I'm okay with it. Other than that, I mostly agree with your judgement on the game. You did actually get an amazing price, as other people have pointed out.
