I am doing alright, not a big fan of this month personally (not because of Valentine's Day) but later in the month a year ago, a good friend of mine drowned. I know the closer to the date, the tougher it will be. Lately I been a little on the irritated side, haven't slept well, but I try to take the positive with the negative. As well as keep myself busy with work, and my Youtube channel, and doing other things.

I have these 12 hr shifts being in the Navy which sucks sometimes, and being in a different time zone than the rest of my friends sucks but other than that it’s been going pretty good. I just recently got back into using Vizzed after 7 years so that’s a plus in my life. The days off (I usually get 3 or 4 at a time) are really relaxing. My wife and I either head out and do stuff or we stay in and relax. I’m getting my bachelors degree right now through online school so I have an option of going for civilian work when if I decide to get out of the military. I’ll probably do another enlistment because I wanted to be on a ship in the first place lol but the military decided for me otherwise.

Right now I'm doing pretty bad. Since the city is on lockdown, I was trapped at home on Monday so I tried working out.

I worked out for 5 minutes and my arms still hurt like hell 48 hours later. Working has been difficult as a result.

I feel nice and hopeful. Things may be tough in the world right now by and large, but as soon as things smooth over I'm looking forward to getting myself out and about and living life. I picked a strange time to perk up out of a bout of depression.

Not great. I've been pretty depressed for a number of reasons, and finding that my hobbies aren't really helping take my mind off of things.

zanderlex :

That's how you know you are probably working out wrong... while you should experience some discomfort, and strain from working out, you should never feel that much (two days worth) of pain from only five minutes of exercise.

If you were lifting weights, bump whatever you were lifting down like 50%, do way less repetitions, and give your muscles time to recharge.

legacyme3 : It's not that I was doing it wrong, it's that I haven't worked used these in so long. The last time I used these was probably in 2018 but I was so bored from being home.

When I was really into working out with these, I used to do a set of like 40 reps on each arm 4 or 5 times a day. But this time I could only do 1 set and then died on the inside.

zanderlex :

Unless you were doing a really low weight, doing 40 reps of anything is highly inadvisable.

The ideal amount for any sort of workout is between 8 and 12, with 20 being the upper limit maximum for endurance lifters.

Your endurance training comes from minimizing the amount of time between sets, not from doing an extended set of 40. Doing 40 reduces the amount of time your muscles have to relax and rest to virtually 0, which actually damages your body in the long run, rather than helping it.

When lifting weights, if you are going for muscle strength, go for a higher weight than you are comfortable lifting, and do 6-8 reps and multiple sets, with at least a minute between sets. If you can only do 1 or 2 sets, then you are doing too many reps, or lifting too much weight. If you are going for muscle endurance, go for a lower weight than you are comfortable lifting (not significantly), and do 12-16 reps for multiple sets, giving yourself between 30 and 45 seconds to rest between sets.

You might think that being able to do 40 reps and 4-5 sets is a good thing, but you were also able to do it because you were younger, and the muscles heal at supersonic rates in our youth. Even if you were able to theoretically able to do that many now, you would be hurting your body more than helping it. It is possible to overwork your body and not get positive results.

I'm not doing great if I'm being honest. The last week has been really rough. I'm hoping the old adage of bad things happening in 3's holds out because if so then I think I'm through the worst of it.

Bad thing #1 - I lost my job a little over a week ago. I wasn't all that surprised that it happened but I didn't think I would be the one to go. There were other people who were less skilled, and therefore cheaper, than me that ended up being kept. I think in the end this will be a good thing for me but for now I was upset.

Bad thing #2 - my wife got in a car accident and totaled our only car. This happened this last Wednesday. Thankfully my wife is okay. It's been a few days and the worst thing she has noticed is her wrist and elbow are a bit stiff and sore (probably from holding on to the wheel during the crash). So, thankful that she isn't seriously hurt but bummed that we have to replace our car and who knows how that will go with dealing with insurance. Thankfully my parents have 2 cars and are both at home right now so we are able to use one of theirs for the time being.

Bad thing #3 - we found (I think) a leak in our roof. I was in the bathroom earlier today and heard a dripping sound. No one had used the sink, toilet or shower recently and the sound was coming from an exterior wall. When I went outside a few minutes later I could see discoloration under the roof overhang next to where the bathroom is. Again, thankful we have insurance and I'm expecting we will have an adjuster come by Monday or Tuesday to look at things and hopefully we will get the roof replaced.

So.... those are the three kind of bad things that have happened recently. Hopefully this is the end of the bad stuff for a while. And honestly - this quarantine stuff happening right now is also tough. I'm fairly introverted by choice but this is all getting old now. I want to be able to go visit my family and what not. I want life to go back to being remotely normal.

Right now I’ve been pretty bad for a couple reasons. First I’ve spent the last 3 hours debating whether or not I should actually go back to school because of loans. I also didn’t get a stimulus check so I’m sad.

geeogree :

s***, geeo.

I mean, the job thing was probably to be expected with the pandemic. A lot of people have lost their jobs, and I consider myself fortunate I'm still working right now. You'll land on your feet, though.

The car thing is absolutely miserable. At least your wife is ok. Don't envy you dealing with insurance. I was in my first accident a few months back, and I didn't even bother making an insurance claim, because the damage was so minor, and I didn't want to deal with it, even though it wouldn't have been that difficult.

Having had a leak in my roof growing up, I can confirm that's the cherry on top of the s*** sundae. Good luck getting that fixed. More annoying than anything, but still.

legacyme3 : I forgot about this post and I have a bit of an update...

Job is still gone - we're fine financially but it sucks. I am enjoying being home but I do miss the work environment and having a schedule.

Car accident - this actually wasn't too bad. We got a very generous settlement on this one. Very nearly what we paid for the car because we pushed hard and made sure they got all the info right (which they didn't originally). Got about $3,000 extra because they had the trim level on the car wrong.

Leak in the roof wasn't actually a leak. Turns out the ceiling fan in our bathroom doesn't have an S-bend in it so we hear dripping from it when there is condensation or water coming in from outside. This isn't actually causing any damage and is an easy fix in the attic. We'll likely only have to spend about $1,000 to get that and a few other fixes done in the attic to prevent loss of heat and fix this leak and 1 or 2 other minor issues.

So, yeah it's been kind of crappy the last few days at least overall it hasn't been too bad. We'll likely have enough money to replace the car we had pretty easily and the roof isn't as bad as we were worried it was. We drop our claim with insurance and don't owe them anything for the inspections done because they won't approve any damages related to the claim.

So, yeah it was crap at the time but it has turned out alright so far.

I'm glad to see some things are looking up there. Still sucks, because spending money at all when you don't want to is annoying, and you don't have the income from a job right now, but like I said, I'm sure you'll hand on your feet.

-----

I start working from home on Monday, and it's going to be super annoying. It's not that I dislike the idea, but I know my motivation is going to wane a lot, since I'm at home, and in theory, nobody is watching over my shoulder. Imagine there'll be a lot of snack breaks throughout the day, while I study for my exams.

legacyme3 : I worked from home for a couple weeks before getting laid off and it was tough. It was easier because there were no people distracting me or talking behind me or anything like that. Knowing there wasn't anyone that could see my screen meant that other things did distract me more often. It's sort of a double edged sword.

But yeah, I'm getting some help with the emergency relief funds the Canadian government is giving so we'll be getting some there and my wife still does her own stuff (she's self-employed and can work online exclusively if need be) so we've still got some income there as well.

Right now I'm not doing bad.

I filled out a form on Wednesday and hopefully in a few days the IRS will tell me if I'll get the stimulus check.

Also on Wednesday I paid the entrance fee for school so now I only have to worry about taking out a loan.

I'm feeling pretty under the weather, and somewhat depressed. A lot of it has had to do with working from home (which I hate - I don't mind being home, but I find it too difficult to work from home).

I'm wondering if I'm suffering from allergies for the first time in my life, but I kind of doubt it. I think I'm probably just not taking good enough care of myself.

I’m just trying to enjoy the weather, the usual. Gym-less life is a bad life I’m not used to it by one bit but yeah

Other than that everything is well for me, learning to adapt to this “quarantine” life
