Heard of that FNAF movie coming out? or at least those rumors that it is? Excited? Well you'd better not be!
It's been pretty obvious if you've ever looked at the history of them that movies based off video games have always done terrible. Maybe not in terms of money, per say, but the actually over all movie is horrible. They are cheesy, they don't have to do with the game, they are much to short to fit in all of the good parts of the game, or they just go to slow or too fast paced. In any case, they weren't the best of movies. But just look at how much they've sold! DO YOU SEE ALL THAT MONEY?! I mean I would expect people to have high hopes for these kind of movies, if you think about it. Video games don't get much coverage on anything but the actually games themselves, or maybe a tv show or anime if they are lucky enough. (Hush, Pokemon doesn't count.) However if you look at the ratings for these movies, you can see just how bad they really are. I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the movie industry isn't really trying. Just comparing the sales and the fact that they are movies about video games, which you don't see everyday, You can tell that they get people hyped up for these movies, only for those people to go see it and be disappointed by how horrendous it was. *COUGH* THIS *COUGH* I've legitimately seen that movie, and I can tell you from personal experience how bad it was. I mean, I was very young at the time, but I remember just enough to tell you it was nothing like I thought it could have been. It was nothing like the game at all, and first of all the characters weren't actually the characters they are in the game. What I mean by that is they were these weird humanized..things that just didn't work. All you need to know is it was a very terrifying experience. But why is it failing? Other than them not trying, There's an aspect missing. It ain't a game no more. Ever felt like the character in the game rather than it being someone else? Say if you were playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or something, tell me, do you refer to the character as Link or do you say "Me"? There's this feeling you get from a video game that anything that isn't a video game can't really do. It's the feeling that your part of the story. You make the decisions, You control what happens and you watch the consequences. Movies however, don't have this kind of feature because they are after all, movies. They are set and stone. Yes, games do have stories that might not change, but it gives you the illusion that what you are doing is making an impact on the storyline and the outcome of the ending. A big part of what makes a game enjoyable is this fact alone. Without that, what do you have? Pretty much nothing. It'd be like taking off a wheel from a bike. that bike isn't going nowhere without that second tire. So yeah, don't be expecting something amazing from that new movie Pixels coming out sometime next year. It could either come out a masterpiece, the very first of its kind, or flop just like the others. Only time will tell! Gingercream1 :
I am in no way hyped about the Live actin Sonic the Hedgehog movie. And I know that people will go to see it. Spend their money, and that Sega will make lot's of money. I also know that's why they're doing it. Video game movies suck. Even Sonic X has issues, but something about it was pretty cool. I think in concept it could be done right, but it seldom is. Pokemon movies? Maybe so. . . but I think an anime is the only right way to go about things. . . Hey, I found a Star Fox comic that was pretty awesome. But that Mario movie? Maaaaaannnn I actually watched that. Talk about horrible! Even the worst video games are better than that horrible mess. I am in no way hyped about the Live actin Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Very well said. It was at this point in the article that your point began setting in for me. You managed to put a face on the trouble behind these kinds of platform crossovers, and that's something I've never seen anyone do. Video Games are an art, only instead of looking at the art, you can be inside of the art This is why gamers connect to the stories and characters. This is what sets gaming apart as a higher median of art in my opinion. Very good work, Ginger. Very well said. It was at this point in the article that your point began setting in for me. Very well done. You put a lot of time and effort into this article. But you know, Need For Speed was actually pretty good. But like you said pertaining to other movies, it really didn't follow the game that much other than the mechanics of the game, and the cops chasing you, and you being able to crash and wreck your opponents. Also, your " THIS " link doesn't work for me; it tells me that access is denied. Also, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was pretty good. Well, that comes to show you that video games doesn't make good movies, and movies don't make good video games (thank you LJN). Athough they're a couple of excepions to this rule about video games turned turned into movies turned out great and vice versa.
So, it's really how you look at it, although I never really watch that may movies anyways. But video games becoming movies are always a bad thing to do. I think animation would be where video game movies stand the best chance. But even then, they're walking on thin ice. That Ace Attorney movie was enjoyable, but that was a concept that could have actually worked in a movie. However, a movie about a plumber in a magical kingdom rescuing a princess from a turtle monster and his goons, shockingly, doesn't translate into a movie. (Although Bob Hoskins tried his best...) Nor does a movie where you look at a wall, and press a button periodically to keep the spooky popup bear from yelling boo translate too well. But I will admit I'm sickened but curious as to what they do with that concept. lol Anyway, great article! It really got me thinking on this also. But in my opinion, I don't have very high hopes for Pixels. But that's enough rambling to contain it's own thread now. xD Sword legion : Strangely enough, it seems that the games that get the most hate from fans about their stories, and those that their companies kinda shove under the rug make some awesome comics. Like the Star Fox one, Sonic's comic, and Mega Man's. They're probably the only readable comics being printed right now actually. Oh hey Isn't this the newest Game Theory?
Either way, I do think you are right. It takes away the impact the user has and that takes away a ton of fun. Instead of making video games movies or movies video games, we should make an in between, not quite a movie but not quite a video game. Although Wreck-It Ralph was amazing. One of my favorite movies. maguc : Maybe Well, yes, but i felt he left out some things that really needed to be pointed out. I decided I'd put my say in it. -w-
Although the thing with Wreck-it-Ralph is it was based very loosely on video games, at least I think so. It wasn't exactly any one video game, and it really wasn't a game we've ever played, so there really wasn't a connection between the player and the game in the first place. thing1 : Yeah, it was just this: Still the worst movie ever. I think the real issue with video game movies is that Hollywood alienates the game fans to try and get the masses to go see their movies. Typically, they over explain concepts that we all understand as gamers, or they skip over large portions of the story to set up the next action scene. If they were less concerned with getting the frat boy demographic to watch the movie with lots of explosions, they might actually make a great movie that could even get some people more interested in the game they are trying to portray. On another note: I would hardly call Postal a video game movie. The game (and its sequel) had no plot, so how could they possibly make a movie from it? Uwe Boll just makes garbage movies and tries to hype them up by giving them video game titles that may or may not vaguely resemble the game whose title he stole. I could not have said it better than Blizzard Entertainment did when he put in a bid to make a Warcraft movie... "We will not sell the movie rights, not to you…especially not to you." If only the other game devs had this much sense... Eirinn: "Video Games are an art, only instead of looking at the art, you can be inside of the art This is why gamers connect to the stories and characters. This is what sets gaming apart as a higher median of art " I can not agree more. Any lobotomy patient can sit and watch a movie with drool running out the side of their mouth, but videogames pull you in. They offer far more psychological stimulation, and even some physical interaction, than movies. videogames aren't just made, they are both an audible and visible symphony of digital art, crafted with great dedication and vision. At least, until post gamecube era Nintendo. That being said, I thought Silent Hill was a good movie. I don't think it's because it's a video game movie that they fail, it's mostly because of who does the movie, since most of the time someone who has no connection to the game makes the movie and tries to spin it their own way. That's part of why Wreck It Ralph didn't end up like that, they were able to do their own thing and have it not break anything. |

m0ssb3rg935 : I agree. I liked the Silent Hill as well. I think it catered to the fans of the series a bit more than the other movies mentioned here. It gave us that same feeling that playing the game did with its story-telling and environment. Eirinn : m0ss's summon failed. zanderlex : You're absolutely right. They aren't flops because they are video game movies...they flop typically cuz they are bad (I can't explain Prince of Persia and Mortal Kombat's success tho...)
