Ultimate Fighting Championship Featured Review

Ultimate Fighting Championship Review by: LegolasJJH - 5/10

Ultimate Fighting Championship
Here is a game released for the Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC that shares strange similarity's as the company it was made after. The game was released in the year 2000 when the UFC was owned by a different company than the one that currently owns it. The UFC was even less known back then and was dieing as a promotion and as a company. Since the UFC was almost entirely the face of the sport known as MMA or Mixed Martial Arts it was a dark time for fans and fighters alike.

The game features 8 fighters of this era, some that would move on to become the face of the sport and others whos names have all but been forgotten. Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Eugene Jackson, Pedro Rizzo, Frank Shamrock, Guy Mezger, Kevin Randleman, and Evan Tanner are the playable fighters. Playing this game now is interesting because it is a look back at how these fighters started their careers, and you can see in retrospect who moved on to greatness like Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Frank Shamrock , and Evan Tanner.

The game honestly does not hold up all to well to the test of time. I think it is ironic that this is the case because like I said the company at the time of this games making was also close to bankruptcy. It was not until the UFC was sold by its owners at this time SEG to ZUFFA which is the current owning company of the UFC that the UFC not only became a successful business but a business that is worth in the billions of dollars and is now claiming MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world.

GRAPHICS: 6
Well since we are judging a game on the gameboy color , you honestly can never expect much out of the graphics. The biggest thing that could have done better for the games graphics is the fighters sprites. The fighters are only barely distinguishable from their real life likenesses.

SOUND: 6
The sound is not really noticeable but also does not detract from the game. Their just really isn't anything that stands out in this department but again its tough for an old handhelds capability's.

ADDICTIVENESS: 4
The game is fun for about the first hour but it gets old pretty fast. The fighters lack variation in their styles so even though you have 8 fighters to choose from, they are all pretty much the same in play style, only differing in appearance.

STORY: N/A
Since this is a sports game their really isn't any story to it. You take on the role of your favorite SEG era UFC fighter and attempt to become the world champion.

DEPTH: 5
Again, this game is pretty straight forward and simple and the gameplay gets stale pretty quick. I was able to figure out how to win pretty easily on my very first playing of the game and got the belt in nearly all of the different divisions.

DIFFICULTY: 4
This game is pretty easy once you get a hang of the controls and realize how simple you can win the fights if you score a takedown and then just finish the match with ground n pound. Apparently the fighters of this game tap to strikes often because even though the game describes some of the fighters as submission fighters , the game does not contain submissions. Instead the fighters tap out from ground n pound on the regular and that is how a 'submission' is scored in this game.

OVERALL: 5
Overall I would only recommend this game to fans of the sport or the UFC. It's main draw is the fun look back on the early beginning days of the UFC and the sport. For people who are not fans of the UFC I would move onto one of the more popular fighting games or maybe try one of the more modern UFC games which are much better.
