The Simpsons   Harley3651
The Simpsons arcade game remains one of my favorite arcade beat-em-ups of all time. Not only that but the show the game is based on still remains one of my favorites of all time as well. The first time I ever played the game I was 5 years old and saw it in my Local Chuck E. Cheese. Since then it has remained one of my favorite games of all time.
The Simpsons arcade game was developed and published by Konami (you know, before they went downhill) and released to North American arcades March 4, 1991. In Japan the game saw release there on August 11, 1994.
I'm going to say right off that I recommend this game. That said I could just stop the review right now and be done with it. But I wont. So that said lets see why I recommend the game in my review of The Simpsons.
Graphics 10: The graphics are very bright and colorful. The characters are very detailed and the backgrounds look amazing. Not once did I ever get tired of looking at the game as I was playing through it.
Sound 10: What good is a video game without sound? Not a very good one I bet. Luckily this game has amazing sound. The music is fun and catchy to listen to and never gets old. The sound effects from the attacks to the characters voices are also great to listen to.
Addictive 10: Oh boy is this game addicting to play through. I ended up playing through the game 5 times prior to writing my review because I was having so much fun with it. It is one of those arcade games that once you pick up you wont want to stop playing.
Story 9: The story is kind of a down note for me. The story goes the Simpson are walking through Springfield where they bump into Waylon Smithers who ends up kidnapping Maggie after she accidentally mistakes a diamond he had just stolen as her pacifier. They then take off after him in hopes of rescuing Maggie.
Depth 9:The game boasts of 9 different levels with a boss fight at the end of all of them. Not only that but the games controls are real easy to understand as well. One button attack and the other jumps. Pressing both the attack and jump buttons together will cause the characters to do a sort of special type attack. Unlike most special attacks in other beat-em-ups the ones in The Simpsons will not drain your health.
Difficulty 5: The game is middle of the road in terms of its difficulty. With it being an arcade game you just add more credits and continue right where died from. So in essence the game is either as hard or as easy as you make it out to be.
Rating 8.3: As I said in my opening paragraph the game remains one of my favorites of all time. I said it then and I'll say it now: I totally recommend playing through this game. It is so much fun and addicting. Easy to pick up but hard to stop playing.

The family that slays together   Jinx98
Introduction
One of Konami's more famous beat-em-up style games, The Simpsons arcade released back in 1991. This is a game on my occasions, I've had the privilege of playing and beating as a kid. The most notorious place to find this type of game now in day's is a bowling alley where I discovered it, besides it's 2012 ports on the X-Box Live and Play Station Network.
Story- 4 out of 10
These beat-em-ups usually never have much of a story to them, besides just making an excuse for you to fight multiple enemies. As the story goes, the Simpsons family is strolling though town, when BAM! Mr.Smithers, whom was robbing a jewelry store for a large diamond for lord knows why, because it's not like Mr.Burns is not rich, bumps into Homer which causes the diamond to fly out his hand into Maggies mouth which becomes a pacifier for her. Now instead of the logical, way where he just takes the diamond from Maggie's mouth, Smithers decides to kidnap her altogether and send goons after the other family members just to keep them away, because it's not like Homer doesn't for the same boss! Meh..What did we care? We just wanted to brawl, so it didn't matter if the story was stupid.
Difficulty- 8 out of 10
I gave this a 8 because it's a beat-em-up. These games are famous, for out numbering and fighting dirty just to get you to dish out the quarters and come back for more like a gambling addict at a slot machine!
"Just one more game! I know I got it this time! Hey man can I barrow a quarter?!" The Simpsons arcade was no different, but it's not exactly as hard as say "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: in Time" arcade, because you can actually get pretty far in this game soloing on a $5's worth of quarters. Don't take that the wrong way however. Smithers and Mr.Burns will see to it that you at least give up another $5 dollar bill before the game is over.
Addictiveness- 9 out of 10
If you love, classic punching, kicking and smashing your way though multiple enemies with a mix of comedic humor I would suggest you give this game a try. This game can get crazy pretty fast and that's the best part of the game, so why not bring a few friends and spread the fun!Graphics- 8 out 10
The graphics were pretty good for a early 90's game. They are not superior like the TMNT Turtles in time beat-em-up, but they are still good none the less.
Sound- 8 out 10
This is a humor type beat-em-up, so it brings the noises and also brings silly voice over dialog from the actual actors into the game. The music isn't that bad either, which each stage having it's own unique themes that are befitting of them.
Depth- 7 out of 10
It's just a smash and race to the finish game, so there isn't a lot to give in depth, but the characters do being there own special attacks to the mix, such as Bart's spin attack. Solo specials don't stop there. When teaming up in groups of 4, the entire team can perform one big giant ball attack. There's also tag specials such as Bart and Lisa holding hands and clothesling they're ways though enemies.

The Simpsons (Arcade) Review.   Eddy88
Yellow fists.
Beat 'em up... "What's that?" may you wonder. Well, if you're asking that, it's because you never played an Arcade game before. If you don't know, let me explain you. Beat 'em up (also known as Brawler) is one of the best video games genres. What it is about? Simple: Street fights. Nothing but punching, kicking and hitting with several weapons hordes of enemies through (usually) city themed places. All that only to fight the typical big enemy, which may count with some minions to help him to fight you... (And just after beating him, all the minions on the screen would die... Strange, I know). Okay, now know what a Beat 'em up is thanks to this brief explanation, Back in time (yeah, once again abusing of this phrase) this genre used to rule the Arcades... And, as I said, on a previous review, Konami used to get many attention with their 4 players brawlers. Now... What do we get if Konami makes a beat 'em up about The Simpsons? We get this: The Simpsons Arcade Game, one of the few Simpson games that are worth playing. Now, If you wanna know how much is worth playing this... Keep reading.
Story: It's a nice and sunny day at Springfield... And The Simpson family decides to enjoy it by making a walk through the city's downtown. However, something else is going on: The Springfield's Jewellery is being assaulted... by Waylon Smithers (!?) and some goons. Without noticing the presence of the family, Smithers escapes from the store... But then, he bumps into Homer Simpson. As a consequence of the bump, the stolen item, a Diamond, knocks from his haul. Then, Maggie catches the Diamond with her mouth (confusing it with a pacifier). In a hurry, Smithers decides to snatch the baby and run away... Now it's up to the rest of family go after Smithers and rescue Maggie. (6/10)
Graphics: Pretty colorful and full of life. The backgrounds are amazing and are very well detailed. I have to mention that the character's sprites are very well animated too. Just wait a while without moving, and you'll notice that they have their own "waiting" animations. (Which are pretty funny, by the way). (8/10)
Sound: Great... Konami is also very well known by the quality of their games' musical tracks. As usual, this game counts with some catchy and energetic tracks. Every stage of the game has a different kind of music, and every boss has it's own track!.. SFX sounds quite strange in my opinion. An example is when you hit an enemy... It doesn't sounds like a punching effect. But, it's not a big problem anyways. (9/10)
Addictiveness: This title has a fair amount of addictiveness, once you finish with it, you'll come back to play it, only to see how long you can go without dying or without getting hit. (7/10)
Depth: Sadly, Brawlers are not know for it's depth level, because it's same thing on all the levels. (Hit, hit, and hit) The only thing that makes this game different from the other games of the same genre, is it's Gameplay. Here, for example, if you're playing with somebody else, you and your partner can team up to attack enemies. (Just let one character next to other character, and they will team up). As in other beat 'em up, Food is used to increase Health Points, and several objects can be used as projectiles to attack enemies. Oh, also, there are two bonus mini games through the game. Besides all this... The game doesn't offers much. (7/10)
Difficulty: A bit high... On this game, you can't hit enemies repeatedly (after giving them some hits, they hit you). And Bosses get harder and harder as long you progress. (8/10)
Final Rating: 9
This is, definitely, one of the best games based on "The Simpsons" franchise out there. Simple but very entertaining... If you can play it with a/some friends... Even better!

Eeexcellent...   floobadoo
There have been a lot of bad Simpsons games, and I'm happy to say that this is not one of them. I remember playing an this game on an old rusty arcade machine and being shocked at how fun it was. The animations are lively and entertaining, all of the levels match the style of the Simpsons. It's fun that you get to see a lot of the show's characters as you proceed but they don't seem to care about all the fighting, like when you can jump right on Kent Brockman's desk and he'll keep on talking for the news like nothing is happening. Most of the music is in the style of the Simpsons intro, but with a different feel to each location. As a beat 'em up, the game is pretty addictive, but it kind of lacks variety in attacking. However, you can pick up different weapons though, like a hammer or sling shot. There are many throw-able items which include, but are not limited to, pop cans, chairs, trash cans, rocks, ninja stars, skulls, and 3-eyed-fish. The game's plot is that Smithers tried to steal a jewel, but ran into Homer as he rushed out of the shop. The gem landed in Maggie's mouth, and in his rush, Smithers stole Maggie and the gem! This story is random, but this sounds like it could happen in the Simpsons universe. The game is long and has 8 stages, and is sure to keep you occupied for a good amount of time. You will likely get knocked out a lot, but it doesn't matter since there is infinite coins here. The only way I was able to beat this game in an arcade is because a glitch was triggered that gave me and my brother 80 lives! (The specific arcade machine was so old) It's a great game of the beat em' up genre.

The Simpsons Arcade Game   classgame
Well are currently in TDV mode and it's summer, and nothing brings out the nostalgic memories in me LIKE A COIN-OP GAME! WELCOME TO MY SUMMER GAMING MAME-ORIES the day of the week where I reminisce and review coin-op games that I played in hotels, that's right once upon a time in the gaming industry hotels had arcades, and the Simpsons Arcade game was among them, and just by hearing the sounds of this game takes me back to the old Holiday Inn in Grand Forks, North Dakota, they had other games too and there was another one but I'll talk about TMNT next week, but here we are talking about the Simpsons.
Ah the Simpsons, back in the 90s I would watch it once in awhile however when it aired on Teletoon I watched it all the time. Heck the Simpsons was where I first heard of most celebrities like Michael Jackson or Bette Midler or Conan O'Brien (who ironically used to work for the Simpsons) and well...the Beatles (yeah true fact this was where I first learned who Ringo Starr was even though I was at the right viewing age for Shining Time Station) but man little did we know that it would go on forever, I'm at least two months older than the show itself (if you don't count the Ullman short days, three months older if you don't count Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire) and I will be shocked if I end up outliving it, I mean I've already outlived 5 cast members (if you count Moe and Monty Burns's original voice actor) and I have a bad feeling it will be 6 soon Julie Kavner is sounding worse and worse with each season (and it started being noticeable in season 26) but I've blathered on long enough let's get to the review of the game.
Gameplay and Story: So The Simpsons are out shopping when Homer accidentally runs into Burns's lackey Smithers and a couple of other lackeys who just robbed a jewelry store (really dude? the things you do for Mr.Burns?) and the diamond they stole ends up in Maggie's mouth and starts sucking on it like a pacifier, and we all know that Maggie won't give up pacifiers without a fight, so as a result of that Smithers kidnaps Maggie. What does Burnsie even want with those Jewels, I mean get that this was back in the day when he was a legit threat but geez, you sure this is the same guy that blocked out the sun? so of course the Simpsons are going to get her back, and so starts Streets of Rage Springfield edition. The family has their weapons except Homer who uses his fists.
Graphics: Well I don't have alot to say about the graphics considering this was done in the early 90s, but it leaves alot to the imagination, I mean I get that it takes place in most of Springfield that was accessible in the first couple of seasons, but I bet they would have snuck in the tire fire.
Sounds: Despite not being done by Alf Clausen the soundtrack actually does fit quite well with the game.
Addictive: Forget that the arcade at the Holiday Inn itself had an addictive atmosphere, I can still see the pool, I can still see the pool tables and the hockey table that was basically featured as the miracle on ice game (I'm sure of it!) I can still see the pinball games (hey you can't forget a game that had a police light on top) heck they even had a Simpsons Pinball game there (do you hear me phantom amusements? find a way to find one), I can still see that strange game with the knob and the football player where you could win rubber balls.
Depth: I lost count at how many rounds there are but there are two bonus rounds. But this is the order of the levels, Downtown Springfield, Krustyland, Discount Cemetery/Moe's Tavern, Springfield Butte, Dreamland, Channel 6, and then the Nuclear Plant. We see locations that would be frequented in the first couple of seasons of the show, we get cameos from characters we normally saw on the show around this time (which means, No Fat Tony, No Snake, No Professor Frink, No Rainier Wolfcastle No Van Houten parents, no Ralph Wiggum, No Cletus the Slack-jawed Yokel and his huge family, No Gil Gunderson, No Duffman, No Lindsay Naegle, no Cookie Kwan, and hey just to basically REALLY date the game, we don't even see Troy McClure or Lionel Hutz) including the tattoo artist from the first episode (who eventually morphed into Comic Book Guy) even Sideshow Bob makes a cameo in this game, and he isn't even the antagonist in this one.
Difficulty: Well I definitely remember the first time I EVER finished the game.....June 13th 2005, and that's an easy day to remember because it was the same day that Michael Jackson was acquitted.
Post review follow up: You know, I'm really sorry that this game didn't get a home release because it would be nice to play as someone other than Marge, the RetroArch player won't allow that. And I just wish the actual Simpsons video game releases actually, I mean they still make arcade games (I think...I know they still make Pinball machines) this could use a remake, Konami still exists (I think) Matt, Silverman, Jean make it happen, bring in Conan if you have to. But who could the antagonist be? well to be fair Smithers is more of a threat than Burns is nowadays.....either that or well, remember when Junior Grimey said his dad just "Happened to like hookers" maybe it's time they finished this unfinished business because god knows how many itty bitty vengeful demon spawns of Frank Grimes there are...that would make a good series finale I'm sick of waiting for a second movie.
Man I actually want to play this right now, but I should really be playing one of the TMNT games (not turtles in time) I have quite a day of gaming ahead of me today I should really do those first
This concludes my review, join me tomorrow when I will review Nancy Drew The Secret of Shadow Ranch (which will be posted after 7:30 classgame time because for some reason Maintenance happens sometime after 7...right when I'm writing a review).

One of the best multiplayer arcade games ever made. So sad it never was ported to a home console. Nice that we can at least re-live it via emulation...

I beat this game for the first time ever today! (I was playing as Homer!) It was awesome!! The ending was excellent for its time (1991)!! Maybe next time when I go to the arcade, I'll try to beat it there (and make sure I have enough coins to do it)!!!
PeacesReese 05-12-13 - 12:05 AM
Also, if you get multiple characters to congregate in one area, they will team up to perform different attacks, such as Homer/Marge putting the kids on their shoulders, or the whole family rolling like a ball to knock over enemies!
