The Adventures of Batman and Robin Review by: TreasurePlanet23Introduction
Today, I am going to review The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the Sega Genesis. Oh man, this game was a blast to play! For those of you who don't know, Batman is the protector, or Dark Knight if you will, of Gotham city. It seems like Gotham always has some sort of mutant or maniac that is trying to take over the city. In this case, the main villain that is trying to make the city eternally freezing, we have, Mr. Freeze, at least I think it is. Don't worry, the Joker makes a cameo in this game. As well as, Two Face, and the Mad Hatter. This game ranges from a sidescrolling "Run n' Gun", to a horizontal shooter. Both modes go beyond what most Genesis games tried to do. So, without further ado, let's dive right into this review!
Graphics
Oh man, these graphics are awesome! They really push the hardware for the Genesis to the limit. I really liked the horizontal shooter level's graphics where you atop the city of Gotham in the Bat plane, mowing down some baddies in the air. For example, when you move your ship towards either the top of the screen or the bottom, the buildings scroll with you, as if you were actually in the plane. The graphics throughout the levels just seem to get better and better. The backgrounds are very nicely done, and Batman and Robin both have their appropriate colors on. The developers really seem to have excelled in this area. So, for the fantastic graphics that this game has produced, I will give this game's graphics a solid 10/10!
Sound
The tracks for this game are fantastic. I can tell they really put a lot of dedication into this part of the game. I really enjoy the boss music at the end of each stage. Some of the levels have the same songs, which is ok, but I would much rather have different songs for each stage. Each song has that Genesis tone to it, which is great! It can't match Super Nintendo because it has that charm that it can't imitate. So, to rap up this segment with a rating, I would give the music for this game a solid 10/10!
Addictiveness
Let me tell you something. Don't go into this game thinking that it will be a breeze and you will beat it in one life. Just stop, and get that thought out of your mind. This game like arcade style. You have fail to succeed. In other words, the game will beat you, until you have mastered it and you can do it in a perfect run. The good thing is that you won't have to put in quarters every time you have used all of your continues. I suggest having a second player with you, because it makes it a lot easier. Also, there is plenty of variety of as far a gameplay goes. There is the standard "Run n' Gun" stages, and there is a few horizontal shooter stages. So, the variety even adds more to the addictiveness. Nonetheless, this game is very addicting, and you will be playing this game till you do it justice. So, I rated the addictiveness of this game another solid 10/10!
Story
The story of this game is what you would expect from any Batman game, movie, or TV show for that matter. Like I said before, the main villain this time is Mr. Freeze. His main objective is to rain down snow over Gotham city forever. To be honest, I think this idea is way better than what the Joker had. All he wanted to do was cause destruction and kill people. Anyways, other villains from Batman are in this game also. Such as the Joker, the Mad Hatter and Two Face. So, for the creative idea of making Mr. Freeze the main villain, I give the story for this game another, 10/10! Jeez, does this game have any flaws?
Depth
This is one of my only and main gripes about this game. As far as enemies go, and depending on the stage, there really isn't much variety throughout the game. Granted, there is different enemies that correspond with each stage, but the enemies just keep repeating. It would have been nice to have a little more variety of enemies. Then again, I believe this game maxes out what the max amount of space you can have on a Genesis game. But, besides that, this game has lots to offer. The gameplay is great. Action packed, fast paced, just brilliant. There is 3 types of weapons you can use. The yellow weapon, which is the all around weapon, average speed, average effectiveness, average charge up. The blue weapon, the fastest speed, weakest effectiveness, but the fastest charge up. The green weapon, the slowest speed, highest effectiveness, and slowest charge up. I prefer the yellow weapon. Along with Batman using his fists, and head bashing skills. So, this segment, I give this part a 9/10. Almost a perfect game, in my opinion, not quite though.
Difficulty
This game is very hard. Like I said before, it will beat you up until you memorize and master every enemy and obstacle. But the game is manageable if you put a lot of time and effort into beating it. So, there really isn't much else to say about the difficulty of this game. So, I gave this game a 9/10 for difficulty.
Overall
Overall, this is a great game. I recommend this game to any Batman fan of the series, as well as the animated series. Go and play it on the Retro Game Room while it is still free! It has great gameplay, graphics, kick ass music, excuse my language, and overall a great Batman game. Play it with a friend if you have any! So, overall, I will give this game a 10/10!
Thanks for reading my review! Don't be afraid to give me some feedback on how to make my future review better! I will be coming out with another review in a little bit! Thanks again!
