When the Switch first came out I remember being really excited for a new Pokemon game but when Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee were revealed, I was kind of disappointed. I was really hoping to get a brand new eighth generation Pokemon game as the first Pokemon game to use the Switch’s capabilities. But instead we got a second remake of the original games.
But I tried it anyway since the original games are epic, and in the end, the game was a lot better than I thought it was. I probably put in at least 50 hours each into Pikachu and Eevee and thanks to all the new gameplay features and mechanics, I really liked how the experience turned out.
GRAPHICS: 9/10
To me, the graphics of Let’s Go Pikachu are one of the two best aspects of the game aside from the gameplay. Being one of the first Pokemon games on the Switch, the graphics ended up being much better than the ones we saw on the final 3DS games, and in a few areas the graphics were even better than what we got in Sword and Shield.
I really like the way the character models look, they all seem to be the right size for them to look good without being too close to start messing things up and unlike in Sword and Shield, you can see a bit more of the surrounding area while running around the map, which is a plus.
It’s also a really good touch to be able to see the Pokemon running around, especially constantly having a Pokemon follow you and the ability to see Pokemon in the overworked before you battle them. Follower Pokemon aren’t even available in Sword and Shield until the Expansion Pass. It's a really cool experience being able to run around the overworld and seeing your Pikachu run after you. Or any Pokemon.
Everything is also full of color and life, many of the buildings and environments around the map look really well made. Because of that, I give graphics a 9 out of 10.
SOUND: 8/10
Like the champion theme. Sure, it’s a remastered version but it doesn’t really have the same level of energy as the original. There’s even a bunch of remixes that I think would have fit into the game better. I do really like the main theme here though, it’s not as energetic and fun as the more iconic Pokemon songs but I really like how smooth the song is and its use of the instruments.
Other than that, I’m not a big fan of how many of the songs were recreated but many of the songs are still pretty good in their own right, just not as good as what they were. Sound as a whole is pretty good and will get an 8 out of 10 from me.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10/10
This is definitely one of the most fun Pokemon games to play of the last decade because of it’s unique gameplay elements and new features. Most of the time, you get one or two new features each time there’s a new game that makes it feel fresh. But the Let’s Go games really shook things up a lot to make it feel like it really was a brand new game.
The catching mechanism is cool and while it’s going to get a bit boring after a while, it’s enough to keep you occupied, even if you can’t do your standard battling. I also love the fact that you can see the Pokemon in the overworld. This adds a whole new level to gameplay by letting you pick and choose who you go after. Plus it’s a nice touch seeing the color swirls to show how strong they are and this adds a new level of strategy to shiny hunting.
STORY: 8/10
Since Let’s Go Pikachu is a remake of Pokemon Yellow, the story is pretty much the same as the original, but also the same as pretty much every single Pokemon game. Battle the eight gym leaders and try to become the champion, battle Team Rocket, save Bill, etc. It’s the same old stuff other than a few minor tweaks here and there. Story gets an 8 out of 10 from me.
DEPTH: 8/10
There’s definitely a lot to Let’s Go Pikachu when it comes to depth. The one thing that I’m not a fan of is the number of Pokemon since it’s just the original 151 Pokemon along with all their different forms like mega evolutions and their Alolan forms.
The world of Kanto is pretty big as well but not any bigger than it always has been so that’s a little disappointing. But to me, the two biggest aspects to depth are the Poke Ball Plus and compatibility with Pokemon Home, which is where most of my grade for depth comes from.
With the Poke Ball Plus you can take your Pokemon on IRL walks with you and you can use the ball itself as a controller while you’re catching Pokemon. Pokemon Home lets you transfer Pokemon between Home and Let’s Go Pikachu, as well as to newer games. There’s also a decent amount of things to do between the obvious gyms and Team Rocket stuff and all the other little things. Depth gets an 8 out of 10 from me.
DIFFICULTY: 1
The only thing that you have to worry about in Let’s Go Pikachu is how you throw the Poke Ball when trying to catch Pokemon. Other than that, there’s nothing else that you have to worry about. Pokemon games, especially the newer ones are known for being easy, and the different gameplay features in Let’s Go Pikachu make this game even easier.
The fact that you see the Pokemon in the overworked helps a lot because you can pick and choose who you go up against and it’s very easy to simply avoid Pokemon completely. Not only that, but how good you are at catching the Pokemon will determine how much of an EXP boost you get, so you will be an EXP machine at times. Too easy.
OVERALL: 8.6/10
Overall, Let’s Go Pikachu is a lot of fun to play. There are a couple aspects that make this game not as desirable as some of the other Pokemon games, such as the number of Pokemon and the some of the songs. But the way the game looks as well as all the gameplay features are really fun and offer a whole new experience in regards to how you play Pokemon.
I will definitely say that let’s Go Pikachu is worth a pickup, especially if you are a fan of the original games because it’s a pretty good remake. Overall, my final grade for Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu will be an 8.6 out of 10.
