''Okay, I am done listening to you perverts.''   lolid23
My first review of 2025, this time it's a review of the Nintendo Switch version of Eternights. As you may or may not know, Eternights is a game rated M (and PEGI 16 in most of Europe, I don't know how it got a 12+ rating in Germany...), so, this will be my first review of a game rated M in more than a year, the last game rated M I reviewed was the Nintendo Switch version of Sable's Grimoire in 2023, and yeah, there aren't many M rated games I would want to review left but Eternights was a game I wanted to play and review, it's something at least. Of course, if after reading this review the game sounds interesting in your opinion or if it's a game that you were already interested in beforehand, keep that in mind...Eternights is rated M. Anyway, let's begin!
Story: Eternights is another game that takes place during the apocalypse/end of the world, the back of the box says that ''something, or someone, has turned humans into dangerous monsters driven to violence.'' When the game starts one of the first things you see are the protagonist (he doesn't have an official name) and his best friend Chani creating a profile for a dating app, everything is normal but several days later everything turns upside down...mysterious walls appear, people start to turn into violent monsters and you have to hide or run from those monsters until you can fight against those monsters...after a mysterious woman cuts off one of your arms (yes, really), then you get a new power and can finally defeat those monsters that were human before. It's not an original story (and let's be honest, what story can be considered original nowadays?) and it's not a complex story either, but it works and the cast is very likable, the characters in Eternights really carry the story and they are what makes you want to play the game from beginning to end. Without spoiling anything, I'll say right now that not everyone will like the ending, indeed, the ending in Eternights is one of those rare cases where the ending in a video game (anything to be honest, not just video games) gives me mixed feelings and, I like and don't like the ending at the same time...usually the ending in a video game is just ''I like the ending or the ending is really nice, I love how the story ends'' or ''I don't like the ending, I hate the ending of the story'' or something, but not ''I like it and don't like it at the same time''...it's at least something interesting that can start a conversation and the ending is something not everyone will like...as I said, I like and don't like the ending at the same time. Overall, a dark game (I mean, it's the apocalypse or end of the world in the game, you have to save the world when many people have turned into monsters) with some humor and likable, memorable characters, definitely a 7/10, maybe 8/10 at most.
Graphics: Like other games I've reviewed, Eternights was developed using Unity, and the result is a game that looks better than other Nintendo Switch games. The 3D models look really nice, there are some good/shiny textures and the 2D art looks great, I want to say that, unlike many other anime style games out there, the 2D art in Eternights looks very generic and doesn't stand out, it looks like AI art...but it's not AI art, we could say that Eternights has a more modern anime art style compared to other games and as I said, the 2D art looks great, the characters look nice and detailed but the art style itself is very generic. The lightning is something that could be better, Eternights is a dark game (literally) and sometimes the dark areas or corridors are too dark, Eternights, compared to other anime style games, tries to have more realistic lightning and to be fair, it works for the game but sometimes it's too much. Other than what I just said, I really like the graphics and detailed art, lightning and generic art style aside, it definitely looks better than Gal Metal and Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force for example, 8/10 is fine for this category, definitely 7/10 at least.
Sound: There are some memorable songs in the soundtrack but it's not the best soundtrack of all time, the combat has satisfying sound effects and there is great English voice acting, Eternights has voices in English, Japanese and Korean, in my opinion the English voice acting is great and at times it's even better than the soundtrack. The cast has popular names and some new or less popular talent and I really like the acting. Chani is voiced by Alejandro Saab, Aria is voiced by Elizabeth Maxwell, Yuna is voiced by Risa Mei (an example of less popular talent especially for 2023 when the game was originally released)...it's a good cast with popular actors and unknown, or at least less popular, actors. Also...there are a few vocal songs in the game, something unexpected for an indie game that probably had a very small budget.
Addictive: Eternights is described as ''a unique blend of dating and action where players can explore a post-apocalyptic world filled with danger, love, and adventure'', the game is an action RPG inspired by Persona (something that was advertised and the developer admits it, yeah) with dialogue choices, stats such as ''confidence'' and ''expression'' and the fact that you can develop a romantic relationship with a character of your choice, there are several characters available and it's up to you which character you fall in love with. The protagonist uses (for the most part) close range attacks, you attack mostly with the Y button, there are attacks that use the R button and the X, Y , B or A buttons, you have access to support skills like healing (hold the ZR button and choose a skill) and there are (usually) simple and easy puzzles to solve. Unlike other RPGs where you level up by defeating enemies or getting points of some kind to level up (like in Blue Reflection), in Eternights you don't level up and instead, the bonds you develop with the characters, including love/romance in the end, are what makes you stronger little by little, so, by hanging out with characters or doing those scavenge missions, you get more HP, MP, or white essence, which along with black essence, is used to unlock new attacks, new skills or get higher stats (more defense for example). Black essence, unlike white essence, can also be found in the areas or dungeons you explore throughout the game, and finding black essence when you are exploring is part of the fun. There are also some mini-games that, while not always fun (I don't like Min's mini game), offer some variety and complement the experience. Overall, Eternights is for the most part a very fun game, it's very addictive in my opinion and even though it has several flaws or things I don't like (it doesn't have a photo mode, you can't reposition the camera behind your character, Min's mini game is simple but kind of boring...and other things), it's still a game I really like more or less.
Depth: At most, Eternight will take you 15 hours to beat, and that's only if you take your time (like me) and aren't someone who wants to beat the game as quickly as possible, complete with some pauses or talking to yourself when you play the game (yeah...). 15 hours or less...at least 9 or 10 hours. It's shorter than other RPGs especially most Persona games (at least 90 hours or more) but what the game offfers is at least good enough and it has replay value thanks to its fun gameplay and several characters you can fall in love with. It's impossible to do everything in one playthrough, yes.
Difficulty: I lost many times in Eternights and I wasn't playing on the hardest difficulty, I can only imagine how difficult the game is on the hardest difficulty, at least an 8/10, Eternights can be difficult or challenging, mostly because of the combat or enemies and bosses. That said, the Nintendo Switch version runs great, the game should be well optimized and Eternights has great performance, something worth mentioning because it's a multiplatform game for Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch version was released last year in 2024.
Eternights is a fun game with action combat, a relationship system, several mini games, likable characters, great graphics, and a dark story that a lot of people will like, but I can't deny that it has a lot of things I don't like, as I said, it doesn't have a photo mode, you can't reposition the camera behind your character (something that every 3D game that isn't a third person shooter should let you do, not just the ability to move the camera with the right analog stick), it has some questionable moments and not in a good way...that moment early in the game after you get a new arm and save Yuna and Chani...and then the main character and Chani start talking about porn that they stole from Chani's grandpa, in front of Yuna and even though they are not out of danger...yeah, I didn't like that and if it was a moment where Jae Hyun Yoo or Clive V. Ruder tried to be funny...well, I didn't laugh (there is a time for everything) and Yuna took the words out of my mouth when she said ''Okay, I am done listening to you perverts'', it wasn't the only questionable moment in the game or an attempt at humor that didn't work (or even the characters acting in a questionable manner, like when Min gets stuck and almost no one helps her), but it was the worst instance of, as I said, something questionable in the game and not in a good way. The lack of a photo mode, the questionable or bad moments in the story (only a few of them at least), the ending that gives me mixed feelings (I like and don't like the ending at the same time), the detailed but generic 2D art...it's a mess of a game more or less, even so, I like Eternights and I recommend it. If you love action RPGs or games such as Persona 4, you may like this game.
