Cave story (PC) Review   bombchu link
                                                  Cave Story (PC) Review
So, It's finally time to make a review for my favorite new game, Cave story or really as it's called Dokutsu Monogatari. It is a game where you play as a character wearing a red suit, You start in a series of caves and have to find a way out. On you adventure you find out a lot about the world around you and other characters. Now I would cover the story here, but it is to big for that and has major spoilers, So I will wait until later.
For a little about the game, It was made by Daisuke Amaya or more commonly known as Pixel. He did it all, Story, Graphics, the engine, all of it. He worked on the game for 5 whole years during his time in college and after he got a job at a software company. He based the game of a game he played in his childhood, Metroid.
-GRAPHICS- 9
The graphics to this game have a NES feel to them, all of the characters, caves and objects, are made of blocks. Though some may not like this, I personally enjoyed the Graphic style as it has that 'charm' to them. And Pixel did this style because he could design more art work this way over a 3D game. Everything doesn't look dark of dreary either, there are bright caves, sandy caves, and caves even with lush grass inside. There are very few caves that are dark inside and that really helps the game.
The protagonist you play as look like he wears a red suit with white high-lighting and just a tiny hint of very light green. The reason of the was to make him stand out in the caves.
-SOUND- 10
The Music in this game. . .I almost cannot describe the it. . . The music really is emotionally involving, I mean it, it's REALLY emotionally moving. I have never played a game in my life that has moved me with it's music. All of the other games like Sonic or Mario just have hunky-doey music that is good, but is just missing what this game has. The best tune in the game has to be the "First Cave" theme it almost tells a story right there. And what's weird is that another tune a really like is nothing at all. . . just dead silence after a great loss.
-STORY- 10
I didn't expect much of a story in this game but I was DEAD WRONG! And I am glad of that fact. Just be wary I really don't want to spoil the story for those who want to play the game trust me, you will regret it if you read it and have not played the game before.
*MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD*
In the game you play as Quote, a Robot from the surface who came to this island to stop the Wearer of the Demon Crown. To tell you what that is I will need to back up a little.
Once upon a time there was a King, he ruled a Kingdom on the surface.
There was also a man named Ballos, a kind man who loved the kingdom and helped all the people the best he
could. And all of the Kingdom loved him.
He was no mortal though, He had Magical powers beyond imagination.
The King, in his jealousy, cast Ballos into the dungeon to under go extreme torture. Humans can be terrible creatures sometimes. . .
Under the extreme pain, Ballos Magic ran wild.
In an instant Ballos Magic destroyed the King and all of the kingdom, including his wife, children and. All of the dear Kingdom he so loved was now gone.
All he could do is, under his extremely saddened heart, was laugh from the whirlwind that he stould from.
Jenka, Ballos Sister, (also one with extreme magical powers) Cast Ballos to a floating island in the sky.
She could not bring herself to kill him, even in his state, because she loved her brother so.
But Jenka's Daughter Misery persuaded Ballos to create the Demon crown, however. . .
She was cursed to serve  anyone who wore the Demon crown as long as the crown exists
But the crown cannot be destroyed unless Ballos is destroyed because Ballos spirit lies in the crown in part.
10 years before Cave Story. . .
By the greed of Humans, Robot's are dispatched on the island to find and retrieve the Demon crown.
They Kill countless humans and Migmas. (Cute bunny like humans)
The Migmas, who are all but extinct, see and eat the forbidden Red flowers that they are told not to.
They fly into a violent rage and kill the Robot's, but are never seen again. . . It is a sad tale
The Demon Crown is won. And the Violence is stopped.
Two secret robots are dispatched and are sent to kill the wearer of the Demon crown.
The Robot's names, Quote, and Curly brace
They damage the king but it is unknown if they kill him
They loose their memory and go into hibernation for 10 years. . .
Cave Story
A Helicopter lands on the island to research.
Sue Sakamoto
Kazuma Sakamoto
Momorin Sakamoto
Professor Booster
The Doctor
Itho
these are passenger aboard the craft and land in the island
The Doctor finds the demon crown (that's why the got on board that Helicopter in the first place) And awakens Misery to be his slave and Balrog, Misery's assistant.
You Wake up in a cave. . .
And your adventure begins!
Whoa Nelly that's a LOT of story, and the adventure  has just begun!
Of course all of this info is given to you AS YOU PROGRESS through the game. And on your first playthrough, you will most likely never hear the word "Ballos" unless you are using a game guide.
Now, after you wake up, you go through the first cave and net a polar start from a sleeping guy. You enter this one cave and fall, down into a Migma village that had been raided by the Doctor, only three migmas are left. And Sue who has been turned into a migma by Misery. You learn about a Migma called Tokoro, a sweet little migma child. Misery and balrog come and mistake Tokoro for Sue, and kidnap her to take her to the doctor. You must use the teleporter to go to the Egg corridor and find Sue. In the Egg corridor there is an egg that has a Sky dragon that will allow one to get off of the island. But when you return with Sue. Because of the Kidnapping, King, (the leader of the village), imprisons Sue and holds her responsible for Tokoro kidnapping. Sue asks you to go in her place to grasstown where her brother, Kazuma Sakamoto, it stuck.
You head to grasstown and assemble parts to a bomb to blow open the door to the building that Kazuma is stuck in and return with him and professor booster. When you return, Sue has just finished explaining what the doctor is planning to do with Tokoro, feed her and the countless migmas red flowers so they will rage and take over the surface so that the doctor can rule it. King would never allow that. Professor booster says that the Sand zone is where the flower seeds are. He sends you to go get them and return in one peace, nice. When you teleport the Sand Zone you meet Curly Brace, your long time friend, but she doesn't recognize you and you don't recognize her either. You must knock her out and tell her that your on her side she will offer her machine gun to you but if you don't take it you will be able to get a better gun in place later. In the Sand zone you meet Jenka, Ballos brother. But Balrog has gotten to her first, he demands the key to the store house where the flower seeds are held. Jenka "playes the fool" but Balroog doesn't bit, he leaves when he sees you as to not cause a fight. After retrieving Jenkas five puppies Balrog steals the key and heads to the store house. When you enter you see the Doctor and Misery and Balrog. You see the doctor leaving, tokoro has just eaten a red flower, and king lying on the ground with fatal wounds. You are forced to kill Tokoro to prevent what happened 10 years ago. . . King tells you to avenge him and leave behind his sword as he simply disappears. After leaving the store house Balgor lands on you and Misery warps you to the labyrinth. Inside you find the core to the island after you destroy it, Misery becomes angered and with the doctor warps it to their hideout.
Also you find Curly in the labyrinth, she helps you fight the core but sadly the room fills with water and Curly gives you her bubble shield and dies there. . .unless, you have skipped some weapons and refused to upgrade others. You can save Curly by attaching her to your back using a special cable. and get her to safety and drain the water out of her. If you do she will float away in the water way and land up in the plantation. You end up in the Migma village instead and go see Kazuma in the Egg corridor. He has hatched the Sky dragon, if you refuse to flee with him, you must climb the out wall and enter the plantation. You meet Itho there, but he is a very timid man and hides until you tell him you won't kill him. In the plantation you find curly, you must give her a mushroom to restore her memory. Also you must build a rock using Momorin Sakamoto's help to access the kings chamber. You get up there and destroy the doctor once and for all, as well as the core. But the island is sinking you have to run for your life!
if you rescued Curly you get to go to a special place. As you run you see a house with it's door open. Go inside and you have access to the sacred grounds! Then you go on and learn about Ballos, and finally meet him. He tells you that he is deeply saddened and requests that you kill him so that he may rest in peace forever, or else He will kill you (remember, his magic controls him at this point) you destroy him and Misery is set free from the curse that was cast so long ago, The island floats back up and is now peaceful again.
*SPOILERS END HERE*
-DEPTH- 10
The game has two very different endings. Many story twists, multiple side quests, and many completely different weapons.
About the weapons. They start at level 1, to upgrade them you must get the triforc... err. . . Small golden triangles. Collect enough of these goodies to upgrade your weapon to level two and then level three (it is extremely easy to get a weapon to level 3) but you lose the triangles if you take damage and if you get hit enough, you level down and your weapon is weaker!
There are 5 completely different weapons that you get. A basic firing weapon, a sword, a bubbler that makes a shield of bubbles around you. a Missile launcher (Cool! can I have one?) And a fireball shooter.
that's quite a bit really, there are also 6 main areas to explore and they are not at all small, they consist of at least  5 different caves and take quiet a while to explore.
-ADDICTIVENESS- 8
Because you must beat the game twice to get both endings, you will put at least 20 Hours in this game. Pack on an extra 5 hours if you don't know what your doing and need to fight the same boss over, and over, and over (especially the true final boss who is extra tough). I loved this game and will play through this game at least once more before I put it up for a long time.
-DIFFICULTY-  9

I will say, the difficulty in this game is extremely tough, especially if you get the best ending. It is unbelievable what you have to go through. The bosses are super tough, and actually I got stuck for about 1 hour of play time on a single boss! So yeah, this game is most definitely hard core.

-OVERALL- 9.7
I honestly loved cave story, it's the best game I have ever played and really should be played by everyone.

Cave Story Review   Zircron Swift
I'll like to take a short break from retro reviews to give credit where credit is due for what I think is a truly great game.
There are two different types of games. “Brand” games, which have popular company names on them, are pretty much everywhere. These equire 20, 50, or even 100 people to create graphics, music, coding, etc. They create some of the best (or in rare cases, worst) games out there. The other type is an “indie” game, which only have one or two people working on to create music and graphics. These are normally found on an iPhone and are quite not uncommon They have a certain charm to them that either makes or breaks them. The feel of these kinds of games are surprisingly different to Brand games. Sometimes, though, the creator can create something so magnificent that only brand games can only dream of. And one of these games stands out like a shiny diamond in a field of stars. The game: Cave Story.
Created by one man, Pixel, this game has gained huge popularity. He started making the game back in 1999, and worked on it for 5 years, releasing in 2004. It was once overseen, but after a few years, this game was, and still is known as pone of the best indie games ever, if not the best game ever. Now, I don’t entirely agree with that *cough* Ocarina of Time *cough*, but it is defiantly the best indie game by far, and is indeed better than half the games out today. Just what is it about this game that makes it so….great? Well, your about to find out.
The story is that you wake up in a dark and gloomy cave with no memory of whom you are, or were you are. You try exploring the cave and come across someone sleeping. Your going to “borrow” the gun for a while, he won’t mind. After you kill a few things, you notice that the enemies drop pieces of triforces….I mean gems, that’s right…..gems. These power-up your weapons, going up to three levels. But if you get hit, then you lose some of that power, so this new game play makes you think twice about defeating enemies. You can also fire in four directions: up, down, left and right.
After you leave the cave, some rabbit like creatures known as the Mimigas are talking. The mention someone called the Doctor (not that Doctor), saying that he’ll be back to take one of them away if they don’t get Sue back. Then you fall on one of the Mimigas. Toronko, the younger Mimiga protesting of handing over Sue, runs away. You find out that the one you fell on was called King. He’s like the leader, but there are only six left, no thanks to that Doctor. After following Toronko around, you meet a recurring enemy known as Balrog, who works for the Doctor, a lunchbox toaster thingy. Or is he a bar of soap? And then a witch called Misery (also works for the Doctor) comes in and kidnaps Toronko, mistaking her for Sue, despite her complaints that she wasn’t Sue. So I guess you have to stick around and help save these Mimigas from certain doom and stop the Doctor from what ever he’s planning.
As you progress in the story, you’ll become heavily attached to all the characters you meet. So fast it’s surprising. In fact, this game has one of the best stories I have ever heard from in an 8-bit game, and possibly one of the best stories full stop. Everyone is so full of character, and everything blends in so well to suit their behavior. Balrog has little common sense and acts that way, Misery has smooth comebacks and works her words well, making an admirable yet hate-able character, the Doctor is just some jerk you would hate full stop, and the Mimiga's all have different roles that portray a helpful environment, yet some can still show it's not all sunshine and rainbows. One man created all this, he is a genius. There are also those moments where the old heart strings are tugged, coming in places you would hardly expect. This is one of those games that has a naturally great story, and a great story in a game will have several theories on things that were never explained properly. This game has that, and at one point even a secret forth ending was made up with very possible out comes that it seemed like it should have been in the game.
The graphics might be in 8-bit, but they are incredible charming and life like. More perfect graphics could not be asked for. The Mimiga's are cute (and some of the enemies are as well ^^), the bosses are intimidating, and the backgrounds give amazing detail that surpasses Double Dragon, and are worth paying attention to. Every background gives an immense sense of mystery, and so much more could be said on the background of this world if you could explore those backgrounds, even if they lead to places that are completely pointless. Myths, rumours and legends could be thought up and theorised here and many could be very plausible. It is very rare to have graphics that give a sense of history to them, and the amazingly deep story for such a short game enhances them even more. Pixel took great care in the story and graphics, and wasn’t afraid to try something different in the game play, which worked very well, but surely he can’t have made good music….right?
Gladly, I am very wrong. The music….I can’t describe it in words. It’s almost as good as the music in Ocarina of time….no….it’s almost better than Ocarina of Time, Castlevania and Legend of Zelda all rolled into one. Almost every song tells a story, but these stories can’t be told with words or pictures. They are told with emotions. Only those emotions can bring the true meaning of the song, and the only way to experience them is by listening to the songs. It's got the meaning of Ocarina of Time, the style in which you can listen to it over and over without getting bored from Legend of Zelda, and the awesomeness of Castlevania. It’s very rare that you have songs like these, and to have just one man create all this is just…superbazinly fantasitic. Pixel is one talented man. With all the character attachment you go through the entire game, when you reach the end the music reflects what you desire and what you want, and that will not be to just beat the game, you want to legitimately save the Mimiga's, to put and end to all of this hardship that is happening at where you are, and if that means you sacrifice your own life to make it happen, then so be it. Most of the music means so much to me in this game, and the situations it is portrayed in makes it all the more meaningful, especially during the last boss (it just depends what ending you get).
There are a big variety of different weapons to use, each unique with different outcomes at level three. You start off with the humble Polar Star, but you'll later get weapons such as the Rocket Launcher, the FireBall, and even a sword. You want to find out what each weapon does and what it does at level three, so you grind for a bit to get them up. This is a good way to get used to a weapon and decide weather you should use it or not. You don't need that weapon to defeat a boss or get passed a door to to break some rubble, it's there to give you more choice, not there so you can use it once, like other games do making it pretty much useless for battle. Every weapon is unique, and every level is interesting to explore and experiment with. The sword makes an interesting close range weapon, but at level 3 it does more than close combat. The Nemesis on the other hand, gets weaker as you level it up, only for the experts! Sometimes, you can trade weapons for other weapons. But be careful, because when you trade it, you can't get it back. And that can be really annoying if you need that weapon as a certain point....and not just to shoot things!
The level design is fresh and challenging. It teaches you everything you need to know in the first cave. You start off in a cave with some water, and a save point. Now, some people might think that they should go in the water. When you do, there is a message  stating you have a certain amount of air left. This teaches you that water is bad if you don't get out of it soon enough. If you run out of air, you die, stating quite bluntly "you downed". But there's a save point so that doesn't matter. Then there are these blocks which can only be destroyed by a Polar Star, which makes you go the other way. You see red spiky things, you want to be their friend, but they kill you. So you know to avoid those. Again, near a save point so it doesn't matter. A life thingy to increase your life so you know their good, even though they are red =P   And there's some water before your first weapon, in which you know water makes you jump lower and can kill you. This level design, although blatantly obvious to gamers, gives new gamers a great idea on how to play the game. Although it is a little odd to press down when you go through a door (due to being able to shoot in four directions, pressing up as you shoot to shoot up would be annoying if you went through a door). All the over levels makes you want to explore the entire place, get involved with the structure of the game and the history of this strange and wonderful world. What is around the next corner? Why is that farm there? So many things that could make for a great sequel on the past of this fascinating world.
Overall, I give this game a 9.7/10     This game offers a great replay value, with charming graphics, superb music, incredible game play, and a gripping story line. The game will make you cry, it'll make you want to let everyone you know play it. And when you find out that it's possible to get another ending....well, follow the clues and after that, explore every inch. You might find something that wasn't there before. When you follow a different path, there are subtle changes in the story that make a huge impact on the game play, and at the same time make you feel eerie if you played it once before. It's available as a free PC download to play. It's completely safe. It also make a release on the Wii and DSi for 1000 points. With the 3DS game released (only online, for some bizarre reason), people are sure to know more about this amazing game. One man created all this (ok, not the Wii, DSi or 3DS versions, but the PC one was all his), so give him a little credit and give it a go. Something I really wish is if someone made a NES hack of the game to be uploaded onto Vizzed, so people can play it there. You shall not be disappointed by this game, that I can guarantee.
Seriously though, play this game. It's amazing, superb, incredible and every other nice word in the dictionary. If you like a game that has a good story, perfectly fitting music, graphics that ache with untold mystery, addicting and unique game play that is riveting every second of the way and a game that has a ton of charm in, then this game is for you. There is no reason not to play this game.

Cave Story Review:
9/10 almost perfect
Graphics:They aren't much at first glance but the creator of this game somehow made it to the point as if they have a personality. They each have their own unique features, styles, equipment and storyline
10/10 Perfect
Sound:The sound in this game is amazing mainly the almost last level, and the final boss theme, and the moon song but this kind of music is amazing i was so happy when they put in jukebox mode it made my day the sound gets a 10 due to the fact that its amazing and i wish a lot more game music was like this in fact this is my favorite game music ever it even surpass the legend of zelda fairy fountain theme which is saying a lot for me.
10/10 perfect
Story:each character has their own storyline like Qoute an Curly Ballos and Jenka and the whole team that came to the island the way that memories were lost but through much maneuvering and such they can remember it all and the story just keeps on flowing and this is why its so perfect the storyline is hard to get to but worth it it all has to do with how the demon crown was made and how it effected the island and when it did quote and curly were the only remaining of their kind but naturally found each other and through a long fight laughed at the misunderstanding and began their adventure together
10/10 perfect
Addictiveness:The game itself is very addictive especially with cave story + as the game gets new features the story mode itself is replayable  but the lost level was very cool add on to the story but was not made available for a long time (due to it looking inappropriate but who the hells gonna notice it on pixels) but the story mode has a lot of collectables hidden secrets capsules and cool weapons that you may have missed including 3 endings there is a 4th one but its only on one of the cave story's its very sophisticated to get,and the sheer fact that the musci will bring you back to game multiple times and let the storyline flow
9/10 pretty damn hard
Difficulty:it depends on what difficulty you choose
easy:You can collect health capsules and bosses have half health and your cloths are yellow
Normal:You can still collect health capsules and bosses have normal amount of health your cloths are red
HARD:Your insane if you wanna try this mode bosses health are doubled and your stuck with 3 health for the entire game and you can't collect max health capsules i beat the secret final stage with hard mode on I'm proud of myself for doing so i only believe a set of people can do that in the world
and your cloths are blue
and for some reason the best ending stage is really hard i don'y been like eh its hard but like a holy crap this part is impossible kind of hard
7/10 Depth:there are many things to explore and the story mode is decently long with all the puzzle and the amount of one hit deaths that slow you down the game is fairly big as though it does have a lot of cool feature within but the about of gameplay is amazing it took me 3 years to master the game and I'm still not bored of it thats how great i think it is and how long it is
10/10 THE PERFECT GAME
Overall:i believe that this is my favorite game ever no matter how many hi definition games i see they'll never replace the pixled Qoute and Curly that I've come to know and love and as i see all these great quality's i don't see a fault that why i think this game is perfect
