Mega Man also known as mega Man I was the very first game of the iconic Mega Man franchise. Mega Man I originally came out in 1987/1988. Mega Man I introduced Mega Man but it would not be until Mega Man 2 that really established the franchise as one of the most popular video games series of all time. Still every series has to start somewhere. As with most Mega Man games they are several hacks out there. Mega Man Redux is a hack of the original game. So I will be comparing this game to the original. Lets get started.

Story: 9

The story was left unchanged from the original game. Dr. Wily and Dr. Light are two of the worlds most known robot engineers. Both scientists win awards. Both make a total of 9 robots. 6 of the robots are helper robots to help humans perform tasks. However, Dr. Wily wanting to rule the world takes the 6 robots and reprograms them to use a robot army to take over the world. Dr. Wily left behind lab robots Rock n Roll. Proto Man had already left on his own. Rock having a strong sense of justice gets turned into Mega Man the fighting robot by Light. Mega Man sets out to bring Wily to justice and stop the rampage.

Okay, I liked the plot of the original game. It introduced the characters very well. It did a good job of introducing Mega Man to. I also like how it introduces Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. The only thing is why did Dr. Wily want to take over the world. Did he have evil desires to begin with, was he jealous despite winning multiple awards or what? That is not really explained why his motive is in this game. So overall I give the plot or story a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and controls: 8

The graphics are so much better in this version than the original game. Mega Man I was infamous for its glitches, sloppy graphics, and bugs. This version fixes most of those problems. I really like how the stages got a make over while keeping their original color. In fact, it looks like the graphics to a late NES version or early SNES game. I really liked that as it made things more clear. In the original game the colors were nice but the backgrounds looked fuzzy. I also like how the sprites have been improved. In the original game the sprites were off somewhat so it was nice they were improved.

The controls have also been improved. Mega Man I had sloppy controls. It was so easy to fall through a platform despite landing on it. Also the controls in the first game were irritating. I was so glad to see the controls had been fixed. It made playing the game more fun. The controls are no longer your enemy in this game. Now, they are still a few glitches in this game. One glitch I discovered caused my controls to lock up. I do not know if that was due to the emulator or the game. In one stage you can still fall through a platform but at the same time you can safely land on it. Therefore, I think the graphics and controls are much improved from the original game so I will give it an 8

Sound: 8

The sound in this game was left unchanged from the original version. However, the sound was cleaned up. The tingling has been removed. I do not like tingles and in the original game I would just mute the computer or tv. Also it does not sound like the tunes are lagging like they did in the original game. A lot of the tunes are how they should be. My favorites in this game were Elec Man, Ice Man and Fire Man's theme. I really was glad to see those themes get cleaned up. Mega Man's Buster sounds like it should instead of nails on a chalkboard. The sound is not as good as future Mega Man games. But I will be honest its hard to top the future game soundtracks. Still, I give the sound a good 8 out of 10.

Replay Value and Depth: 8

This version is so much better than the original game. In my opinion this is what the first game should have been like. I don't know why the original game had its issues. The first game had some things going for it but the graphics, glitches, bugs and other things made it less enjoyable to play. This version fixes that and makes this version of Mega Man I fun to play. The graphics are so much better as I stated, the irritating bugs have mostly been fixed, and the sound has been cleaned up. I really like that and when I want to play Mega Man I I will certainly play this version.

Mega Man I started the tradition of Mega Man games having depth to them. This hack kept that. The stages are for the most part long and will take a while to master. In addition, there are a few secret items to find in this game. Mega Man Redux like the original Mega Man I will not be a game you can blow through. I give both the replay value and depth a 8 out of 10. The reason I do not give higher ratings is for a few reasons. There are only 6 robot master stages the other games have 8. Second, future games had more secret items, and different paths.

Difficulty: 9

The original Mega Man I was a difficult game but for the wrong reasons. The glitches, bad controls, and bugs made the first game very hard. In the first game it was so hard to land on a platform and still fall through into pits/spikes. The controls would also slow down allowing you to get hit or fall. A few times enemies could do double damage with one shot due to the bugs. So how does this version of the first game compare.

Well, this version is difficult but for the right reasons. Enemies just love to gang up on you in this game and often times they will swarm you. The enemies also do a lot of damage even small enemies can take a chunk of health away. The other thing that makes this game difficult is they are lots of spikes and pits in this game. I will go ahead and say it there is a good chance you will die at some point in this game. The Robot masters while some are easy some can be brutal. Not to mention just getting to a few of them can be a big problem.

Although this is a difficult game it is doable. I like games that offer a challenge, require skills and a little bit of luck to master. It seems like for the most part this version does that. It is not like the original game that is difficult due to irritating reasons. However, with that being said they are still a few issues in this version that can get one killed. There is a glitch that will cause the screen to lock up. I had it happen to me I was trying to switch weapons and could not get it to unlock. The second one was when I changed weapons trying to hit an enemy and I fell through the platform despite landing on it. These are the only two issues I found.  Thus, I give the difficulty a 9 out of 10.

Overall: 8

What can I say for this to be a hack it was so much better than the original game. Not many times does a hack beat the original. I really think this is how the original game should have been. I don't know why we got what we got with the very first game. At least Capcom fixed those problems in Mega Man 2 which made Mega Man one of the most popular video game franchises of all time.

I really like how the story was left unchanged. Mega Man I had a good introduction story to it so that did not need to be changed. The graphics have been cleaned up so much. It makes this game more fun to play than the original. I feel like the maker of this hack was trying to get Mega Man 4 or even Mega Man 7 (SNES) graphics. It really shows that they spent a lot of time in fixing the problems. I also like how the sound had been cleaned up. I no longer want to mute the tv or computer. The first game would make one do that.
The difficulty is about right, its challenging, it is difficult but doable. The first game would just frustrate you as I mentioned under the difficulty section.

While this game does have a lot going for it they are a few negatives. While a lot of the bad glitches were fixed they were still a few in this game. The main two is sometimes when you change weapons the game will lock up and you have to reset it. Also if you get game over in a stage you can't choose stage select you have to continue. I did have the screen to lock up on me. Also if you jump and change weapons make sure your are not about to land on a platform you will fall right through into the pit. I wonder though is this the game or emulator. I lean more toward the game cause it happened to me in another emulator too.

Overall, I give this version an 8 out of 10. I had fun playing this game and this is one that I will play again. When I want to play the original version I will play this version. Now, I would still though only recommend this game to veterans or novice Mega Man players for a few reasons. First being, while this game cleaned up a lot of the issues the original game had its still a difficult game. If you get frustrated from dying in a game real easy you probably want to play other games. This game is still a difficult game and you can expect to die in it. Now if your a novice or veteran Mega Man player than yes I would recommend this game. It is fun, but challenging and it is how the first game should have been. For new Mega Man players I recommend playing Mega Man 2 before this game.

In summary, this is a much improved version of Mega Man I. I hope you take time to enjoy this game.
