Everyone has heard of the titanic from stories, probably the Internet, and of course, from the movie with young Leo, but how much do you really know? I'm here to tell you all about it! (Not really).

The RMS Titanic was, at the time, the worlds largest ship at 882 feet and 9 inches. That ship was huge, but not so big in comparison to the largest ship now a days, the Seawise Giant oil tanker, at 1,504 feet (No longer in use). As we all know (spoiler), the ship sank. Why was this?

The ship sank due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of the polar ice caps. People back in 1912 weren't entirely sure of everything these ice caps were and could do, and they're knowledge of where they were and how big they actually are is what ended the titanic. Had people known about how big they were, and how low in the ocean they were, the titanic would have steered plenty clear, and 1,500 people wouldn't have died.

In relation to the implied topic of this forum, the love story in the movie is fictional entirely fictional. Leo did a fantastic job in his acting and looking like he was from 1912. Should have won an Oscar...

Any weird facts you know about the titanic?

I think this forum should probably stay dead, it's a terrible subject and adds practically nothing.

Also this isn't a boating forum. Mayhaps this boat should float elsewhere.

yoshirulez! : I feel no need to keep this forum dead, it was active at one point.

Nothing really adds anything, it's all about having fun, and that's what shipping can bring.

Plus, if you'd look at some other threads I have mentioned boats, it's not just for shipping, it's for anything boat related.

No need to be a buzzkill.

There is some new evidence about the Titanic

I have read and many engineers have stated had the Titanic hit straight on it would have survived and been able to say afloat. As hitting it straight would have caused the strongest part of the ship to hit. But when the captain turned the iceberg hit at an angle which had lighter material causing buckling. Allowing cracks and water to quickly rush in.

I remember reading last year that a fire had occurred near were the ship hit the iceburg. Some engineers have a theory that the fire caused the bolts to loosen and when they hit the iceburg it allowed openings to occur.
