Mega Man 4 was a huge hit for the NES and Capcom. In fact the game is often put in the top 100 NES games of all time. Mega Man 4 came out in 1991. The original Mega Man 4 has been ported to several game systems over the years. So it should not be surprising that a lot of hacks have been made of this great game. Roll-Chan 4 is a hack except this time the player plays as roll Mega Man and Proto Man's sister. I will be comparing this hack to the original game. So let the good times Roll

Story: 10

The Story is similar to the original Mega Man 4. The plot has been changed to fit the Roll Play through. Dr. Wily and Dr. Light built industrial robots to help the world. Except Dr. Wily took the robots he left Rock (Mega Man) and Roll behind. The world was thrown into a crisis with Dr. Wily using the robots to take over the world. Dr. Light needed to do something but he did not know what to do. Rock and Roll having strong senses of justices volunteered to be made into fighting robots. Rock became Mega Man and Roll became Roll-Chan. Roll defeated Dr. Wily three times in the past but a new threat has emerged. Dr. Cossack has sent 8 new robot masters after Roll and Mega Man since he is on standby. Roll heads out for a new battle. Just who is Cossack, why has he sent 8 robots after Roll and why does he want to take over the world? Roll heads out to get to the bottom of all of this armed with an upgraded Roll Buster . Is Dr. Cossack really evil or is somebody pulling strings.

Okay I really liked the original story of Mega Man 4. So I was glad they kept the same concept the makers just changed it to fit Roll. The plot shows creativity having a new face appear. In addition, the plot offers mystery and suspense. It is not till later in the game that a plot twist occurs. That is what made Mega Man 4 great it offered something new. So it was glad that concept was kept as well. I give the story a perfect 10 out of 10. It does not get much better than this.

Graphics and Controls; 10

The graphics are really good in this game. In fact, they are the same as the original Mega Man 4. Mega Man 4 really showed what the NES was capable of with the graphics in Mega Man 4. This game uses the same graphics they are some minor changes though. The stage layouts are the same. I really like the storm with rain graphics, the water graphics, the desert graphics and overall the color of the stages. It fits the stage themes nicely. Roll Chan 4 did not change that at all. All of the stages have unique themes to them. Now what has changed is the color of the sprites. Rolls color changes when you have a special weapon in use. I really like that and it is a nice touch. Each robot master's weapon gives Roll a new color. Moreover, for this to be a hack there are no lags at all. A lot of hacks typically have lags but not this one.

The controls are very amazing. Mega Man 4, 5 and 3 had some of the smoothest NES controls of all NES Games. This hack kept all of that so that was a very nice touch. Not one time does the controls get stiff, change speeds or appear sluggish. This is how controls are supposed to be in games. So considering the makers kept a lot of the same graphics, it should be no surprise I give it a 10 out of 10. Graphics do not get much better than this for NES games.

Sound: 10

Mega Man games are infamous for their high quality of sound. Mega Man 2 really started the quality in sound. But Mega Man 4 and 5 to me had the best soundtracks among the NES Mega Man games. I like every stage and fortress theme in this game. One can have the tunes on your mind for days that is how good they are. Pharaoh and Dive Man are my two favorites of this game. Also the fortress stage music is also my favorite. None of that was changed in this hack which is groovy. The stage tunes are so good you may just want to pause the game and listen. The Roll Buster sounds like the Mega Man Buster in the original game. I like how it charges and gives off a hum sound to let you know a powerful blast is coming. Enemy shots also have a pow sound to let you know they mean business. Keeping the same sound as the original Mega Man 4 bumps this rating to a 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 9

I am going to admit Mega Man 4 was my favorite Mega Man game in the NES line. Everything a great game has MM 4 had: good story, good graphics, good controls, sound and depth. When I got Mega Man 4 I played it a lot it was one game I could not put down no matter how many times I beat it. Roll-Chan 4 is the same way since it kept all of MM 4 high qualities. I certainly had fun playing this hack it brought back memories. I have found myself playing Roll Chan 4 multiple times just like I did and still do for MM4. Roll Chan 4 is certainly a game that you will want to play again.

Depth: 10

MM 4 had a lot of depth to it and that was pretty much unchanged for RC4. RC 4, has high amounts of depth to it. They are lots of secret rooms in this game. Some require special weapons to reach. The good news is you can revisit stages so if you miss a room you can go back. They are also lots of power ups and special items to get in this game. The stages are very long. So this is a game that requires you to explore every area of a stage and good chance you will have to revisit a stage. Also due to the length of the stages you will spend a lot of time getting through the 8 robot masters. Then you have fortress stages that are long and they are a lot of fortress stages. So yeah its a good thing the game gives you passwords because it requires lots and lots of time to beat. I really like games that have high amounts of depth in them it really makes the game special. Also beating high depth games feels like an accomplishment. Thus, I give RC 4 a 10 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7

MM4 was difficult but it was doable. The game offered players a challenge and was more difficult than Mega Man 3. RC 4 is no different. The main difficulty comes from several areas. First of all, the Robot Masters pack a wallop and can quickly do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. In addition, the Robot Masters only take 1 unit of damage from non charged buster shots in previous Mega Man games they sometimes did 2 units of damage. Second, Enemy placement can be a problem in this game. Enemies just love to gang up on you and ambush you. You can be going through a stage and suddenly have a lot of enemies on the screen. Third, they are lots of pits and spikes in this game. Enemies just love to knock you end to them. But sometimes you have obstacles to get over the pits. In one stage the storm tries to send you down the pits. In another stage the water tries to send you up to the spikes. So there is a good chance you will die sometime in this game.

However, while the game has its difficult moments. The game tries to help you out. Rolls Buster Shot fully charged works the same as Mega Mans did in the original game. A fully charged buster shot can do damage and clear out a lot of enemies. Moreover, they are power ups and secret weapons to find in this game. Those secret weapons come in handy when you need to get across an area with lots of spikes or pits. In addition, the Robot Masters weapons are very powerful so if you need to take out a lot of enemies use them. Energy Tanks are very plentiful in this game so if you need one you can usually find one.

So RC 4 has the same difficulty as the original game. Also, it has the same ways the game tries to help you out. Since the game tries to help you out that brings the difficulty rating down some. Still, do not take this game lightly as it is challenging. Once you learn the patterns it becomes less challenging. I feel like the game has the right difficulty though. While the game is difficult its nothing that is going to frustrate the casual gamer. Yes you will die some in this game but it is not one of those games like future Mega Man games that bury you. So I give the difficulty a 7 out of 10.

Overall Rating 9.6

Mega Man 4 came out in 1991 and I remember being a kid getting this game. I purchased the original game at Service Merchandise when they were in business. I had saved up my allowance money to get this one. So you can imagine being a kid and getting something you had wanted. As I stated Mega Man 4 is one of my favorite NES Mega Man games. Last year I learned about Roll-Chan 4. I learned that you now get to play as Roll Mega Man and Proto Man's sister. I was intrigued by it and figured I would give it a shot. Since it was a hack I was kind of skeptical since things get changed around in hacks. I was wondering if it would be as good as the original Mega Man 4 and it was. I was amazed on how well the makers did in this hack. Thus, creating a very solid game.

I really like Roll-Chan 4 even though it is a hack. Everything a good game should have RC4 has just like the original MM4. I really liked how the makers kept a lot of things the same. The story did not need to be completely redone. I also like the amazing graphics and sounds in this game. Also the depth is very good and typical in most Mega Man games. Games like this are a gem. I really had fun playing this game and it is one I will play again and again just like I did the original game.

The only really negative was the difficulty. I wrestled with myself on that one. The reason being I like games that offer a challenge. While this one offers a challenge the game tries to help you out some. I kind of feel like they put way to much power ups and energy tanks in this game. The Power Ups and secret weapons have to be found. But it seems like every stage has an energy tank in it. Some even have multiple energy tanks. I think the game could have had less of them. The game could have had less and still kept the not overwhelming feel to it. That is pretty much the only negative this game has. For most players that is not a negative but a Plus.

Overall I give RC4 a 9.6 pretty much similar to the original Mega Man 4. This game for it to be a hack is so awesome. I felt like the makers of the game were trying to make RC 4 feel like a different game and offering something new despite the game being a hack. If that was the makers goals they certainly nailed it. I really liked this game. So do I recommend this game? Yes this game is so awesome that it would be fun for anyone to play. Those that played the original game will get the same thrill out of this one. Gamers that are looking for something new will be pleased with this one. Moreover, this game is fun for the entire family. It is a game that you can be comfortable with your children playing. Also even if you are an adult this game should be fun for you as well. The game's difficulty is challenging but not to bad. It is not like some Mega Man games or Mega Man hacks that will make you throw your controller. I have played a lot of MM games and their hacks that frustrate you. This would also be a great game to introduce someone to Mega Man too even though it is a hack. If you use this game to introduce someone to Mega Man too be sure to introduce them to the original Mega Man 4.

Anyway, this concludes my review. I hope you give this game a chance and enjoy it like I did.
