Ah, here we go, the ultimate childhood game! This game, for the time it was made is very violent. Especially considering it's a kid game, let alone a Disney game from back in the day. No it's not M rated violence, but considering it's a kid game, it's very violent. Ned can literally get his head cut off, eviscerated by sharp claws, trampled by kids, eaten, lose his internal organs, and all without a speck of blood! So a little like what I hear Heart of Darkness is like, I think?

But this isn't a bad thing per se and it shows just how old this game is when it can get away with this sort of thing. I wasn't ever able to beat it, as the puzzles in this game were just too hard and I just had no clue what to do. I would try, literally hours on some days, to get some kind of progress, but I would just never be able to. The fact that this game is impossible for me to replay now that I am an adult makes this story a tragedy. But I am not here to tell you that. I mean I could, but it would just waste the time of whoever is reading this.

Nightmare Ned, a game I haven't played literally since I was a kid. I was 9 years old, fairly clueless, and indulged like 80% of my time to try to play this game. It was frustrating, somewhat scary (for a kid's game of course) and violent! (again, for a kid's game) It also had a very Tim Burton feel to it, so if anyone likes Tim Burton, they would indulge in this game! I remember playing this game, I remember most of what went on, but I haven't played this game since like 2002 or so, maybe 1999 so if anyone played this game like in the last week or so, and notices some problems with plot or so, then please forgive me.

Graphics: This game has fantastic graphics. It can hold up very well. It had the spooks and most of it was comedic slapstick. Probably the best game of it's era. I especially like how it has a Tim Burton vibe to it. It has that Gothic esthetic that should please his fans. I wonder if that was intentional!

Sound: The music and what little in the way it has in songs are very very VERY catchy. Ear Worm ticks that are toe tappingly awesome. The Mouse and chalkboard especially are extremely catchy. The main hub level has some eerie atmospheric music that is sure to haunt you well after you play it. I adore the soundtrack of this game and wish I can play this game to relive that moment in my life. My computer is too modern and crap to consider it though. Look up the songs above on Youtube to get a feel for the songs. Bit of a warning though, if you listen to that The Lesson, Chalkboard level song, you will get it stuck in your head should you do so. Bit hard to understand (in more ways than one, but lyrics are kind of hard to understand unless you are reading the lyrics too) and the Mouse Song is pretty dark... especially if you have the words in front of you... whew!

Additiveness: I returned to this game so many times. I could never beat it, but that didn't stop me! You just want to succeed at this game and try to play it to get Ned back home. God I put so many hours into this game and I just couldn't beat it.

Story: Ned comes home from school to find his mother and baby sister out so he decides to do what any kid would do in this situation. Stay up playing video games and eating sweets. He plays well into the night when suddenly *gasp* lightening strikes killing the power. Then he is stranded in a literal nightmare as a few shadow monsters start haunting him. The game is really about facing your fears as Ned has a lot of them presumably. Each time you overcome something or a puzzle, part of the shadow monster unravels. Unravel enough and Ned sees that the scary demon in front of him is a person from his life. This can be either a bully type character all the way to the house toilet (that level was the worst alongside the doctor one) I think I was only ever to complete the graveyard level in my youth and get his neighbor freed from what I can remember.

Depth: There are so many Easter Eggs and funny moments in this game. From a clear parody of Mortal Kombat to probably one of the most creative levels (chalkboard) in gaming history, the game has oodles and oodles of stuff to do. I never completed it and probably never will unless I can get it to work on this laptop.

Difficulty: The game isn't always hard but some levels (especially the doctor and toilet themed levels for me) were difficult and annoying. The game isn't a cake walk and I am sure I am not the only one who found it difficult for some areas. Still it's a classic game and I am so angry I can't play it again.

Final Thoughts: This remained a very elusive game and lots of people consider it a little creepy, which it very much is. But you know, I loved it. I always had a facination with the macabre and abnormal. The creepier something is, the more I was interested in it. I also found out it had a short lived TV show 20 years too late for me. I had absolutely no idea it existed. The game has two endings, a baddish ending where you don't get over your fears, and a good ending where the opposite occurs. To get these endings, you have to avoid getting sent to the quilt hub level. Anytime you fail a level you get sent back 1 or 2 hours and to get the good ending you have to avoid doing that. Which was easier said than done some of the time. If you like Tim Burton, or creepy, somewhat macabre games, then this late 90's classic will appeal very much to you.

The biggest tragedy here is how hard it is to get it to work on modern machines. I could track down a copy on Amazon or something but it isn't really guaranteed to work. I would be so happy if I can find a working copy of it. Watching a video of someone playing this, isn't really the same thing. Games that were a huge part of your childhood, like this one was for me, are better if you can play them yourself.
