Although a short and difficult game to complete, Comix Zone is a unique idea in that the game takes place in a comic book. The levels take place in individual panels and have their own speech bubbles. The player, in this case the artist, has to enter the "Comix Zone" and destroy the enemies that have been plaguing his creation. Throughout, the player can use up to 3 items that can help either a lot or temporary. The rat in particular can be picked up again and used later whereas the medicine, gun and grenade items are one-time deals. The graphics, being set in a comic book themed video game are very detailed for the 16 bit era and are one of the few parts of this game that I like along with the plot and story.

There are many cons to this game that outweigh the pros, the worst being the life bar. There are no extra lives or continues. If the bar turns red and then goes empty, you'll have to go back to the very beginning. Simply falling off the screen or hitting an electrical box can result in an instant "GAME OVER". The game is very short and for the expert gamer it can take only a half-hour to complete and maybe a little longer for someone playing the game for the first time. And finally, you must master the skill of constantly pressing on the A-B-C buttons as most of the game is scattered with beat-em-up creatures that want to trap you inside the comic book. A Mortal Kombat and platform fusion without the blood

Now included in a few compilation games such as Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, this was among the dozen of standalone games that many kids would had sent back to the returns department because of its difficulty. This was a great game on paper and the rock theme was outstanding but Comix was not good enough for me to say this game was worth playing.
