So, with the announcement of the Nintendo Switch or NX, marks the start of Generation 9 of consoles. How many more generations will there be until the first-party developers (Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony) start putting their games onto PC gaming sites such as Steam or Good Old Games? I personally prefer gaming on the PC with a keyboard and mouse over playing with a controller (which is why I like this site). I am not saying that consoles are terrible, I personally have some games that I still play on my X-BOX here and then, but how long do you guys think that it will be until the PC's and the Consoles all become one console? Will it ever happen? Or instead will there be more consoles that are trying to compete with the three already in use?

What do you guys think?

pc and console will never be together. pc is build for offices and other stuff, consoles are built just for games. the money to make a console a lot more than pc. likewise microsoft will not accept steam in their computers, users will but anyone who is an tech expert will tell you that steam is in no way safe for any gaming software.

mastergame :

What?
I don't know what article or something you've been reading,  Steam is pretty  legit.

David wouldn't have steam games listed on Vizzed if they weren't safe, plan and simple. And Valve themselves would be in a lot of trouble, and getting sue'd.

Tech Experts and non Tech Experts Use Steam because games are generally cheaper to snag on them.

The money to make a Console isn't the same as a PC.   It's actually less,  Any PC guy will tell you hardware wise PC is far superior to console gaming. Consoles are trying to keep up with PC in terms of Specs, not the other way around.

The main Difference between a Console and PC is that you can always upgrade a PC,  as when a Console becomes outdated; you have to buy the next gen version of it.

@OP.
Consoles and PC's simply won't merge together,   and I don't think "Generations" will end.  Consoles are meant for more streamline gaming,  PC on the other hand while viable, isn't really unitized as much in that regard.

There might be some independent consoles out there, but they are basically a stripped down MAME interface with a controller or a console that does retro games. I have always preferred a controller over a keyboard and mouse. A controller is just easier to use, although a keyboard can be mapped to your liking and you have more options. I have always liked the PS controllers, they feel good in your hands. I do not think consoles will ever die,but I think they will always face competition from a PC.

CrimsonCrash 64 : So you are saying that PC gaming is more for indie/triple A title games with higher graphics than console? I totally agree with you if that is the case, as you can find a whole bunch of comparisons online telling so.

Oldschool777 : The ouya is an example of it along with the NVIDIA shield, but they are often forgotten because they are not  "mainstream" enough to be noticed.

CrimsonCrash 64 : one word will blow your mind and everything you know about steam... HTTPS. yep steam doesn't have it, look up at their url and look for a certificate because you will not find it. In fact google will shame steam for it because they announce that all profile creation sites with no HTTPS will get shame.

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/google-will-soon-shame-all-websites-that-are-unencrypted-chrome-https

this is what it might look like, i got to test it

so ya cant beat google, all hail google.

In my opinion, as long as there are video games, consoles hardly have a chance of dying out.
There are always going to be people who want to keep it simpler by just hooking up a console to their TV and playing games outright. It saves them potential frustration, it's less expensive, and they don't have to worry so much about their systems going out of date as fast as a PC.

Inferring from the Nintendo Switch and their plans for more mobile apps, mobile gaming is also becoming more and more favorable, but I feel that as long as the stationary TV is common, there will always be consoles and their fans.

mastergame : Wow. You are wrong in so many ways in just two posts that it's not even funny. Let's see exactly where the problems are:

Post #1: Consoles can only play games, and they even do that poorly in comparison to a PC, while the PC can do just about anything...and that's an advantage for the console? "the money to make a console a lot more than pc." What does that even mean? "microsoft will not accept steam in their computers" They have no control over whether you're allowed to install Steam or not, and they would suffer an incredible backlash if they even thought about blocking Steam to promote their own services. By the way, where's the evidence that Steam is insecure? Apparently every tech expert in the world knows why it's insecure, so can you tell me why?

Post #2: You clearly don't know what you're talking about. Nowhere in the article you cited states anything about Google blocking sites for not using HTTPS, and you clearly just used a cheap "website blocker" extension to make it look like Steam would be blocked. The only thing they talked about was putting an icon there to tell the user that the site is using HTTP, which is less secure. Let's also not forget that you clearly haven't even used Steam, since people who use Steam would know that parts of the site that require security, such as the login page, will force you to use HTTPS.

In summary, you're wrong on almost everything. I hope you'll learn something from this.

NovemberJoy : well duh its not part of chrome, they wont just randomly add future stuff without testing, also it does look almost the same. the article show pictures of what it might look like. you cant say what i show is final because its under testing. the app does more than that, look what it did to the search results:

http://imgur.com/a/Z5c1d
p.s: Photobucket is under DOSS

believe it or not, google will not endanger people's security in the next year.

valve's records of awful security:

there has been a random non-hacker able to upload a game without steam.

one almost dangerous game being launch.

people say their accounts were hacked and Valve did acknowledge this fact.

random information given to people by accident.

lack of game information testing, can not consider a random game on steam safe to customers (we do not know how they are able to say yes 1 million games with only 120+ employees).

paypal allows kids to fake ID, buy and play M rated games

lack of customer protection from 3th party sites which Valves supports.

Lawsuits

9 government officials accuse Valve of harming the people and breaking the law.

Valve acutely breaking the law.

Valve signing contracts with kids under 18 years old and younger (indie developers, they are all over r/gamedev).

more if you want to hear.

Well of course steam gets hacked, that's not really their fault in a sense.

That's like me trying to Say Sony's Playstation Network is bad because nearly everyone else had their accounts hacked way back when.

Hackers can't be helped, and if you think steam is bad because it gets hacked; you have seen nothing yet.

Okay first off can I just ask that we cool down a bit in here before this ends up going overboard into a flame war? There really is no need to get so worked up over video games.

Now in response to the question: I think consoles will stay at least for a while yet. They may eventually die, but currently they're far too strong for that to happen. And I know prophets of doom in the game community want to say that consoles are dying, but they really aren't. Look at fifty million consoles selling in less than a year, not counting handheld system sales, and tell me people aren't buying them still. Then there's PSVR that sold like mad, selling out in several countries in a matter of hours. The dedicated gaming device market is still alive and well, it's numbers are slightly down ONLY because casual gamers (people that aren't really into gaming but buy systems for the sake of having one or two games to mess with every once in a great while) are moving to mobile gaming, and all we're left with is the core gaming audience, and yes a small percentage of those have moved to PC, but PC gaming has been around for years and existed just fine alongside consoles. They're not going to kill them anytime soon in my opinion.

The main reason PC won't kill console? Affordability. Now I know people say you don't have to buy the best and newest graphics card etc. to enjoy PC gaming, and that's true, but what do the "PC Master Race" (gosh I hate that term) people say about consoles? They're too weak because PC is so much more powerful than console and can produce amazing graphics and so on. They also say console gaming is holding PC gaming back because they can't run what modern computers with modern graphics cards and such can. But again, this stress on power necessitates buying top of the line equipment, and as such, becomes far more expensive.
And please don't say that you don't need to buy all of this expensive stuff to enjoy high quality gaming on PC. I never said you needed to have this for quality PC gaming.

Another reason: compatibility and ease of use. As long as generations remain with consoles we have no compatibility issues and not only is game buying simplified, but also everyone is on an even playing field. No one gets an advantage because their rig is slightly faster or whatever.

Finally, developers. Eliminate consoles and handhelds and go PC only for all games. Now PC powerhouse enthusiasts finally can have a game world free of limitations imposed by multiplatform releases with consoles, but we still can't have games that embrace the power of PCs because the developers have to ensure that the game runs on older rigs as well still, or else they lose most of their sales. So in the end PC gaming's potential power doesn't help it any even without consoles. All you can hope for is that developers keep using fidelity settings (low res, medium, etc).

So yes, consoles are here to stay for at least another decade I'd say, and probably more. Generations are also a big deal for consoles, and though Xbox is trying to end them, I don't think it'll happen. I don't see console gamers or developers embracing it as well as MS hopes. It could happen, but I don't think so. We'll see.

Oh and consoles and PC will probably never merge. Look at the Steam Box and how that went over.

mastergame : I wouldn't blame your opinion on PC games, as I thought the same too originally, but Steam is a SAFE SITE meaning no dangerous software is allowed on the site, and the developers "hacking" that player were just to make the game harder, Clustertruck is a hard game that I have seen several of my friends playing. In fact, the developers were probably just having fun watching the stream, as they want more people to come to the player's stream.

Do you see what I am saying now? It was just a publicity stunt so the game could get more attention, game developers don't hack into your Steam Account for no apparent reason! They were just having fun playing with players.

If you want to worry less about this happening go on Good Old Games, there  games are DRM-free unlike Steam so this won't happen.

DragonSlayer22 : this was innocent yes but doesn't really take that much effort to spy on people's information. No one reads the TOS on steam which literally states that certain games or devices will be tracked and information sold to 3th party sites. AKA they are no better than facebook at this point. Still you and everyone else hasn't proven anything that steam is safe, you only say "trust steam" but trust is not something which keeps you safe.

So is this thread still going on or does it need to be closed?

I'm just wondering because no one has responded for over a week and this thread is still open, so I'm just wondering.

Is there no answer to whether or no PC or console is better? Will it stay like this forever? We may never truly know.

They could be combined but how would laptops work with this? It will more than likely have to be tower based as a laptop lacks some features that a tower has plus it would have the option for cartridges as well meaning if a game is gonna be too big for a cartridge then it can be released to CD since the tower would already have one due to the computer side. If this were to come to fruition for the 10th generation then it would most likely have to be setup dual boot style where you have to choose between using the computer or the console.

Aren't Sony and Microsoft stopping game generations? I thought they were just gonna release new consoles as upgrades to the previous ones.

Eirinn : A pc that costs the same amount as an xbox or ps4 will still run better than consoles.
As long as the game runs at at least 30 or 60 fps having more fps won't give you an advantage. Just because a game is released on a console doesn't mean it will automatically run perfectly. Just look at No Man's Sky.

Pokemonfan1000 : Desktops and laptops have the exact same features except a laptop can be moved. Desktops can use more powerful parts. Almost no one uses disks anymore for pc gaming. Whatever can be put on a cartridge or disk can be downloaded. Most laptops have disk slots and not all desktops have them.
