On September 1st, 1992, Nintendo released a Mario game, but it wasn't an ordinary Mario game, it was a Mario racing game.
Called Super Mario Kart, nobody knew how big this series would become. Super Mario Kart was the very first Mario Kart game.
It was also the first go-kart racing game that made the genre popular. The newest Mario Kart games is Mario Kart 8. Mario Kart is almost as big as the main Mario series.
Super Mario Kart is the third best-selling SNES game of all-time, selling 8.76 million copies. It was beaten only by Donkey Kong Country and Super Mario World. Now, it's time to review Super Mario Kart for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.

GRAPHICS, 9: Super Mario Kart was praised for using the special Mode 7 graphics. Super Mario Kart is 1 of 26 games to use Mode 7.
Mode 7 really set this game apart from others, as the background moved differently than the ground.
The characters have about 16 sprites that is shown when they spin out, when they turn and when the camera moves after a win.
Here's a gif: Picture
Each time the characters turn, there is a detailed animation of the side of the character and the sides of the kart.
After every win, the camera pans over the characters, and they make a face when the camera moves in front of them.
The game even uses these sprites on the map at the bottom of the screen. Using these sprites makes the game more detailed.
I've noticed that Mario and Luigi's hats doesn't have a letter on them. Each character looks detailed, even down to their karts.
Some characters have the same colored karts, while other have a unique color.
The Tile Screen shows the character racing, with a obstacle  hitting the character every once in a while.
The 'select your driver...' screen shows the side of their karts, and if highlighted, show the animation where they spin.
The tracks look very good. Bowser's Castle and Rainbow Road looks awesome.  Mode 7 really makes a difference in these tracks.
Tracks have various terrains. From pavement to tropical to icy to a castle.
The tracks have obstacles on them, Mario Circuit 1 has pipes and oil on the track.
Bowser's Castle has Thwomps and Lava. Rainbow Road has no walls with Thwomps and you can easily fall off.
The coins and item boxes are flat on the track, which is different than the newer Mario Kart titles.
Since this was the first game to utilize Mode 7, and the sprites and animations look good, graphics get a ten.

SOUND, 7: Super Mario Kart's soundtrack is good. The best songs are Rainbow Rain, Vanilla Lake, Main Theme and Mario Circuit.
The sound effects are good too, including a shell bouncing, spining out, skiding, jumping, bumping, a race starting, the engine, and collecting an item. There are also other sound effects when driving on grass or any other terrain.
The sound effects do lack because there aren't many, but there's enough to fill the courses.
The sounds do fit the feel of the game, although it lacks, so the sound gets a seven.

ADDICITVENESS, 8: Super Mario Kart is a very fun game, with one and two player modes, as well as 20 courses to race on.
It's even funner to play two player modes. It's very fun, addictive and has a Mario Kart atmosphere to it. Addictiveness gets an eight.

STORY: Super Mario Kart has no story, but I think Mario and his friends just have a fun day together when they go kart racing. He even brings Bowser with him.

DEPTH, 7: Super Mario Kart has plenty of content. There are 4 cups, each with 5 courses, which makes it the only Mario Kart game with 5 courses in any cup, aside from the All Cup Tour from Double Dash. The four cups are the Mushroom cup, the Flower cup, the Star cup and the Special cup. There's a time trials mode where your goal is to set the fastest time. There's also a two player battle mode.
In the Battle Mode, both characters have three balloons attached to their karts. Player can pop their opponents balloons by hitting them with an item, causing them to fall of the map, or ramming them hard (usually with a mushroom). Battle Mode has four selectable rectangular maps. If you complete all three cups on 100 cc and 50 cc, you unlock a special difficulty, 150 cc.
If you complete each course on 150 cc, you'll get a special screen saying "Excelent Driving! You are now a Super Mario Kart Expert!"
In Super Mario Kart, you can win each cup on each difficulty, try to set the best times on Time Trials, beat you friends in the battle mode, and unlock the special 150 cc difficulty. Depth gets a seven.

DIFFICULTY, 5: There are two starting difficulties in Super Mario Kart. 50 cc and 100 cc. They act as Easy and Normal.
On 50 cc, the Computer racers are slower and if you're behind, you can be better items. You can easily win on 50 cc.
On 100 cc, the computer racers are fast and can even pass you. If you're behind you'll mostly get better items. It's harder to win on this difficulty.
If you complete each course on both difficulties, you unlock the 150 cc difficulty. 150 cc is the game's hard difficulty.
On 150 cc, the computer racers are much faster and can easily pass you. If you're behind you'll sometimes get better items.
It's much harder to win on 150 cc.
Winning every course on 150 cc offers a special screen.
You can easily find a difficulty that fits you, so difficulty gets a five.

OVERALL: Super Mario Kart was a revolutionary game. It utilized Mode 7, and paved the way for future Mario Kart games, more specifically, Mario Kart 64. In 1992, there was Super Mario Bros, SMB 2, SMB 3, and Super Mario World. Super Mario Kart was a very different Mario game than what everybody was used to. It also created a genre of racing games, the Kart racing genre.
Overall Super Mario Kart is a great racing game and helped created the future of video game genre.
If you love Mario and/or love racing games this is for you. Overall Super Mario Kart gets a eight and a half out of ten.

Thanks for reading this review, and until next review, bye!
