Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a slice of bread? Perhaps
you wonder how a bread naturally deals with it's day to day tasks. Well,
friends, wonder no more. For I Am Bread answers all of these questions
and more.
I Am Bread is a PC game in which you are a slice of bread. As such,
it is your nature to want to become toast by any means possible. And
through wacky controls, your own sheer determination, and clever
thinking; your toasty dreams just may become reality! But one can never
be truly bready for this game at first. So it's up to one such as I to
at yeast give you my personal view on this game.
Graphics: 7/10
The graphics are pretty nice. It's strange when you see a wacky
indie game have graphics this...not vomit. They aren't exactly the best
I've seen on the PC. But they are worlds better than the likes of
*anything* Simulator, or older games.
The environments and levels all look pleasing. All the objects and
backgrounds had effort put into them, it's not exactly ground breaking.
But nothing in the levels and background look bad by any means.
Everything works together to...Actually look like a believable house.
Probably one set in some cgi cartoon, but, it looks normal. It doesn't
do anything ground breaking graphically speaking, but it is one of the
few humor games who aren't riding on the "These graphics suck even
though it's new xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD" train. And that gives I Am Bread
almost a sense of dignity.
Sound: 5/10
The soundtrack to this game can be summed up as elevator music. It
isn't particularly exciting, memorable, or...Vital to the game at all.
In fact, it may be a good thing that the music isn't very captivating.
You really need to focus on controlling your slice of bread! Sometimes I
get so concentrated that I forget there's any music. And...I swear that
is something that's possible.
The sound effects are rather minimalistic. There are some mundane,
yet panic inducing sound effects (more like a rapid clicking noise) when
you are running really low on your Grip, or whenever you touch the
floor, or something dirty. It makes you want nothing more than to get
yourself back on the wall/counter/whatever you want to climb- and fast!
Addictiveness: 8/10
Despite the difficulty in this game, it's actually a lot of fun once
you get a grip on how the game controls. The game has a sense of
hilarity, and lots of suspense to it. And once you finish a level you'll
have the most relieving sigh you'll ever sigh in your life!
There are multiple gamemodes to the game as well. These have you
playing as different types of bread in order to do different things. As
well as giving you different goals in each level. That only ups the
addictiveness factor!
Story: 3/10
There is a story mode to a game like this, believe it or not.
Although the story isn't about you, the bread. Your story is simply your
endeavors to become toast. The story is, however, about the owner of
the house you are having these adventures in. And also why you are in
each location. The story is told through the unseen house owner's
therapist's notes. Describing his sanity slippage, and his obsession
over toast...More of a story than a few other more recent games anyway.
Depth: 7/10
There is a fair amount of depth to this game. This mainly comes from
the amount of game modes there are. There is story, cheese hunt, free
roam, rampage, bagel race, zero gravity, Goat Mode, and Starch Wars.
These have varying degrees of difficulty. Some are easier, and some are
harder. But that will be discussed a bit later on. But with the tons of
game modes, along with the decent amount of levels, this makes for a
decently deep game. Not anywhere near the depth or Xenoblade. But a lot
deeper than, say, Goat Simulator.
Difficulty: 9/10
The difficulty in this game is intense. But it never looses the
enjoyable factor while being difficult. How each mode is difficult
differs from game to game. For the sake of not-obvious word count
filler; I'll go through the two modes I thought were worth mentioning,
alongside the main mode's difficulty.
The controls are deceivingly simple. There are only four buttons
used, alongside your mouse. Each button corresponds to a corner of the
slice of bread. Pressing a button will make the bread grip whatever
surface it is touching. Whenever you're gripping something; it will
reduces your grip meter. If it runs out you'll plummet to the floor,
or...Whatever you're currently above. The mouse controls your bread,
along with the camera. If you left click and hold the button while
moving your mouse; you'll move your bread around. You'll need to do this
in time with your grips. Right clicking and moving the mouse will
rotate the camera.
If you touch the floor or anything unsanitary; you'll begin to lose
edibility. If the edibility meter hits 0%, you're...not toast! In fact,
you won't be worthy of eating at all. So try not to lose it. Just
remain calm, and get a grip!
Cheese Hunt has you play as a cracker. You don't lose edibility in
this mode, but too hard a fall can and will break you. If that happens
it's game over! In this mode you are searching for a plate of cheese to
insert yourself onto.
Zero Gravity is a slightly more difficult mode. In this mode you're
controlling different thrusters placed onto a slice of bread. You need
to get to the toaster in zero gravity. This is...infuriatingly
difficult; but also it happens to be hilarious.
Overall, this game is fantastic! If you're up for a challenge
anyway. This game has a wacky premise, and each level gives you
different logical challenges. Both in how to become toast, and...How to
get there! Should you fling yourself from box to box? Or perhaps you
should scale walls to reach your goals. Anyway, getting where you want
to go will require quick thinking, and a little bit of bravery. It is
quite the challenge. But it is also a lot of fun, and pretty satisfying
once you complete a level. It's overall...One of the better games I've
played recently. Not the best, but by no means is it particularly bad.
Overall: 7.5/10
