"Why is Star Trek considered so nerdy?"
Well, to answer, StarTrek is SciFi, a genre that is commonly portrayed as nerdy, probally mostly because of the amount of science and technology in it, as well as the tendancy for more intelligent dialog.

"Why does the guy in red always die?"
In ToS the crew members in red shirts were the security detail, and since it isnt good scripting to kill off the main cast it only made sense to kill off a bit part actor, in other words, the red shirt guy.
Plus if you think about it the security people are always the ones that are at the front lines of danger, so it makes sense in that regard too.

"Why is Spock so well known?"
The vulcan race is probally one of the best known, maybe not in name, but for their logical approach to all things, and of course, the ears.
Spock of course is the easiest member of that race to bring up because he was the only main cast member that was an alien, so he stood out.

Lemme tell you the basics...

TOS and TNG (The Original Star Trek and The Next Generation): These two are mainly about two crews that explore the galaxy where "no man has gone before".

Voyager: A show about a spaceship that is lost on the other side of the galaxy and is always trying to find ways to get back to earth and have very interesting adventures.

DS9: Deep Space 9 is mainly dealing with social issues abord a space station that doesn't move, so it doesn't have much action, mostly conversation.

I guess that's about it... unless anyone else would like to add more
