Crawldragon already made a thread about this once, but it ended up closed with no replies.
The same thing could happen to this one, or not. We will find out.
A roguelike is a genre of RPGs that is somewhat more obscure than others. That's probably because earlier roguelikes had no graphics at all and newer and popular ones may have tiled graphics. You, the player, monsters, items, walls, traps angry shopkeepers ready to zap a deadly wand o' lightning at your thieving face are all represented as ASCII characters.
Also, roguelikes are hard.
Really hard.
It takes several years for an average NetHack player to figure out a strategy to beat the game.
Most roguelikes have permanent death, imagine the feeling of standing in front of the Priest of Moloch, ready to take the Amulet and then go 60 floors upward to beat a ton of enemies and get immortal. Then, you accidentally put on an amulet of strangulation.
Fun fun.
Anyway, what I want to know is: Does anyone play, or even care about roguelikes here? If, then what rogulikes do you like (no pun intended, really)?

I've only played a few games that are roguelikes in the sense that you describe them some MUDs (which I don't think most people on here know of) which I barely remember likely because I used to have a shorter attention span and would move on from games that were too difficult after a while.

Roguelikes actually have become pretty popular today with indie developers though they've also changed quite a lot to where it's kind of how to compare them with roguelikes of the past. Not always being your standard dungeon crawling RPG anymore. Usually the things they do share is having perma death and procedually generated levels (and therefore often being brutally hard) with some form of RPG elements and that's about it.

The first games that come to mind for me would be Binding of Isaac and FTL: faster than light both great rogue like games though quite vastly different compared to eachother and are probably the only ones I play somewhat regularly. Some other examples are Spelunky(probably the game that really popularized them) and Rogue Legacy.

Probably how I got introduced to roguelikes as they are today though was through flash games of the sort and in particular a roguelike MMO called realm of the mad god, a bullet hell MMORPG with permadeath and 8 bit style graphics. Probably because I might be slightly psychotic and the idea of permadeath and loosing 100s of hours of progress in an MMO enticed me :V But while fun at first the game eventually got old to me since it didn't change things up much and I moved on from it. It's still up but from what I've heard it's taken a turn for the P2W side as of recently having a switch in owners.

Overall it's a genre that's a bit too hardcore for many gamers due to the brutla nature, and honestly I can't really blame them since essentially every time no matter how much progression you make it ends up going to waste, most of the time :v

I haven't played any Roguelikes before. I actually had no idea what that meant until this thread. Permadeath sounds a bit annoying; with all your time essentially being reduced to nothing. (Maybe deleting some files off your computer can fix this?) But the games sound like fun nonetheless.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

A user of this : actually, the idea of permanent death is what makes Roguelikes fun to play. Instead of knowing that you can just restart at the last save point 100 times in order to figure out the next part you lose. It changes the way you play the game and it adds to the intensity you feel while playing. Much more interesting that way than to simply get to start over where you were 5 minutes ago.

I've only played one or 2 and I'm blanking on the names. I enjoyed them but I don't find many that I really like.

Zlinqx : I know what MUD's are . I used to play MajorMud for years back in the day. There are actually still playing hosting that game today even though the game is like 20 years old now.

I'm very fond of Dungeons of Dredmor. It's a solid roguelike and has some really good humor. The mod support is really nice as well. The community has created countless skills and new types of rooms.

I recently got Brogue on my iPad. Unlike Dredmor, it has ASCII graphics. At first it was a bit of an adjustment, but now that I'm used to it I hardly notice the lack of graphics.

Cardinal Quest 2 is pretty fun, if someone simplistic, as well. I play it between classes.

I tried Nethack, but I got frustrated with it. At the time I was new to roguelikes and ASCII games so I was a little overwhelmed. I should probably revisit it considering that the game is considered one of the best in its genre.

I've had my eye on The Curious Expedition since I played it on its free weekend a month or two ago. It's still in early access, but what's there is already pretty great.

Besides those I really like what are sometimes called "roguelites" It's a game that has some of the features of roguelikes - usually procedurally generated levels and permadeath - but lack others (like being an RPG.) FTL, The Binding of Isaac, Rogue Legacy, Don't Starve, and Spelunky are all worth checking out.
