Before I get into the review: A little clarification
Now I saw some reviews on this game claiming that this game is the same as Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Kirby's Avalanche. After doing some research, I found out that Puyo Puyo was a Japanese exclusive puzzle game made by Compile in an attempt to compete with the top puzzle game known as Tetris. Nintendo would make their own clown of this game under the title Kirby's Avalanche in the US (or Kirby's Ghost Trap in Europe/Japan) Likewise Sega also made their own clone of the game too known as Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. as a matter of fact: Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine actually remixes a lot of music from Puyo Puyo.
Now that I've clarified that matter, onto the review at hand.
Graphics: 8/10
Pros:
One of the nicest things you'll notice in this game is the cutscenes and characteristics. You'll notice the characters have cutscenes and looks that resemble an anime type of graphics. When your going against your opponent, you'll get a nice view of their picture, and their reactions are quite satisfying to say the least. The levels are well designed too and unlike Robotnik's Mean Bean machine, the level and cutscene backgrounds will actually change look and color as you progress through game.
Cons:
This game may have an anime look to it, but just based off of my preference alone some of the character choices are weird. You have a fish with Human arms and legs instead of fins and you have a character who's body is basically a huge foot.
If it wasn't for the weird designs for some of the characters the graphics would've gotten a 10/10.
Sound/Music: 10/10
Pros:
You have positive sounds when you start to chain, and negative sounds. It adds to the game and makes the experience much more dramatic when playing.
The music is the biggest ear candy. You start out with some nice catchy music as your starting out through the easy progression, then a little bit of a harder progression theme, but the main theme that caught my attention was Satan's theme. It was awesome, had a nice beat to it, made it a bit panicky, and absolutely just captured what a boss theme should be in my eyes. There's also some unused music and yes there's a danger theme's when your about to lose. It just has a great all around experience for the whole game.
Story: 5/10 Basically what I get is some vampire guy by the name of Satan is trying to rally up a group of puzzle masters to take over and conquer the universe. A girl by the name of Arle Nadja finds out about this scheme and only with your help can she stop him.
Addictiveness/Depth/Difficulty 10/10: If your into puzzle games unlike me, this game is a really good start. Unfournately in this game, you gotta know how to chain(Which I suck at doing) not only that but the AI gets harder, I usually can't manage past level 3 or above on these type of games. so it's not just a pick up and play game.
Overall: This game is great, If I didn't suck at chaining, and got used to the increased difficulty. My opinions would be altered. But as far as the verdict goes: This game scores a solid: 9.5/10
