Super Mario 64 was a giant step forward for the Mario franchise into the world of 3D. As a launch title for the Nintendo 64 in 1996, this game became a favorite of many and was a cornerstone of the development of the N64 console. The game is remembered today as one of the most influential games for the N64, paving the way for many other 3D platformers for years to come. This review, however, is not about Super Mario 64, but about a ROM hack of the aforementioned game, known as Super Mario 64 - Bob Omb Richard Mastertest.

For those of you who don't know what a ROM hack is, in the realm of video gaming, it is basically changing the format and layout of a game in order to make it more functional or to make a whole new gaming experience. This game, however, is not more functional than the original, but it does provide a new experience. The new experience this game provides was not one I am willing to go through with again. The gameplay is extremely flawed, the graphics are lackluster, it's obscenely difficult, and the whole thing is just so buggy.

For this review, I will be comparing this game to the original Super Mario 64. Be advised: there are a lot more things this game does worse than the original. I an highly angered by this game, but I will try my best to maintain my composure and make a professional review. So, without further ado, let's dive into this mess I would like to call Super Mario 64 - Bob Omb Richard Mastertest.

Graphics: 2/10

The graphics and visual aesthetic of the worlds are so bleak not just compared to the original, but in general. The worlds in Super Mario 64 were so full of life and adventure that I enjoyed just running around in it and wasting time. In Bob Omb Richard Mastertest, the castle is almost exactly the same as the original, but the worlds themselves are tiny and dull. It's like sitting in a white room and just imagining things to be there, but just being limited to watching those figments of your own imagination running around instead of actually being to catch them. The textures look like a pre-alpha version of Minecraft rather than Super Mario 64, which had actual grass instead of solid lime green, earthy mountains rather than just elevated floors and the occasional cobblestone-like pillar, lava that didn't look exactly the same as the platforms it surrounds, and actual clouds rather than pearly rectangular prisms, if anything at all. Super Mario 64 excellently tested the N64's graphical power. Bob Omb Richard Mastertest degraded it.

Sound: 5/10

The music in the original was good enough for me to listen to for hours on-end. The music in Bob Omb Richard Mastertest, however, just isn't as good. Kind of like the graphics, the music in the castle is exactly the same as the original, but within the paintings, it's a different story. There are a few songs I heard, so I'll get started. The music in the first level was absolutely abysmal. It was a recomposition of the theme from the original Bob-omb Battlefield, but it was incredibly lacking. The sounds also really got on my nerves. There is little to no layers between them, and it got annoying quickly. The second song was better. It was more layered and not as lonely as the first one. It had its flaws, having one high-pitched note repeated a few times, but for the most part, it was OK. The third song is the same as the Shifting Sand Land from the original, so there's nothing to say there. The fourth one was a recomposition of Freezeezy Peak from Banjo-Kazooie that actually sounded pretty good. I don't have too much of a problem with recompositions of songs from other games being featured in newer ROM-hacked games, especially since one of my favorite ROM hacks, Super Mario World: The Second Reality Project, used recomposed music from Sonic the Hedgehog. Overall, the music is OK. Certainly nothing I would listen to by itself, but it's OK.

Addictiveness: 1/10

I couldn't imagine I would be playing Bob Omb Richard Masterpiece very much in the near future. The game itself provides nothing to come back to. It isn't rewarding or pleasing, and almost all memories of the game would be negative. I only played to 5 stars and I feel like I've both accomplished nothing and played so much I'm pretty tired of it. Whenever I think of the game, here's what I remember: you go into this incredibly bleak and tiny world in order to explore what little of the world you can, all while attempting to gain stars that are high out of reach. One of the things that made the original game so addictive is that you can come back to it feeling confident and empowered, no matter your skill level. It provided an experience for everybody playing, and whenever you got better at the game, you could play it again, just to get better. This game just lacks the charm the original game had.

Story: 4/10

The story in this game is less structured than the original, but at least a story can be assembled. In the original, Mario was on his way to Princess Peach's castle for cake, but she was kidnapped by Bowser, so Mario has to save her by jumping into paintings and collecting stars within those worlds. In Bob Omb Richard Mastertest, the entire opening sequence is cut out, as well as the part where it turns out Bowser had kidnapped Peach. Although this change may seem like a very cheap one, I can still piece together a story. Remember in Super Mario Bros., the original for the NES, it started off right at the start. There wasn't an intro to tell you what was happening; that was all in the instruction manual. It's not the most conventional change, but it doesn't hinder the game's overall performance too much, either.

Depth: 3/10

Although Bob Omb Richard Mastertest is difficult, it's not very rewarding. Now, I don't mind a good challenge to test my skills, but I feel like this game isn't too much dependent on skills, but it's mostly dependent on luck. It requires you to essentially get lucky. Not only that, but it only offers such a small chance for you to get these stars, which you need in order to go on to the next level. Since it is so difficult to gain stars, you only have so many levels you can access. So you go back and get more stars, and then you have to spend a long, tedious, frustrating time doing countless attempts to get that star. I can't tell you how much I saw that "Game Over" screen while playing this game. With an experience like that, I don't know how a game like this would fend as an actual game in the real world.

Difficulty: 10/10

Yes, I had to rate this game a 10 at something. That something is how difficult it is. Like I said in the Depth section, the experience is long and tedious. You're always trying to get these stars in impossible places, and I mean literally impossible. Just in the first level, there are 2 stars which are completely out of reach: one underneath a high floating platform and one on a giant cobblestone pillar. Speaking of the first level, it is insanely difficult on its own. Pretty much all of the stars can only be accessed by free-falling off a giant platform in the sky. Sometimes, the stars are just floating around in the sky where you need to land in the exact place where they are. Other times, you can't see the stars, so you need to just guess where they are. And this is the first level we're talking about. In the second level, which is sort of like Whomp's Fortress, the only star you can get is too high for you to reach. In the third level (which has the Jolly Roger Bay painting despite being a lava-based level), it's hard to just land on the platforms. There are two paths: one that leads to a 1-up, coins, a high platform you can't reach, and a mountain you can't climb. The other one takes you up to some pillars, but you always fall in the lava. The fourth one, which is sort of like Cool, Cool Mountain, is covered with snow, which is slippery and ice, which you can't touch. The passages are narrow, and the jumps are too far away. I guess they don't call it a Mastertest for nothing. But now, I'm starting to think of it more of as a patience test.

Other Concerns

One problem that occurs is a higher tendency for the game to bug in a couple of ways. For example, on the first level, there are 2 Chain Chomps. The first Chain Chomp, on the ground, will sometimes become stationary around its pole while focusing on Mario. This makes me unable to Ground Pound the pole. Sometimes this doesn't occur, but that brings up another problem. Whenever I Ground Pound the pole 3 times, I hear a little song, then Mario looks up. I then lose my ability to move, jump, punch, duck, and even pause the game. The same also occurs with the other Chain Chomp, on an elevated platform. Another glitch is that in the second level, there is a Whomp who walks to the edge of the world and keeps walking in place. This makes it impossible for me to attack him without falling out of the world.

While we're on the topic, I find another problem with the limited worlds. Sometimes, we would be on a platform floating in the middle of nothingness. Whenever we would fall off said platform, we would fall off the world and lose a life. This makes it difficult to navigate through the world freely, like in Super Mario 64. I don't know if that's a difficulty issue or just a personal annoyance issue with no other category, but it sometimes gets on my nerves.

One more problem that I can't really put into a category very well is the dialogue. There are those little pink Bob-omb Buddies that give you tips and instructions going into each new level in the original. In Bob Omb Richard Mastertest, I really don't know what they are doing. Their tips and instructions are vague and poorly laid out, and it really doesn't give me any ideas of what I'm supposed to do.

Overall Rating: 2/10

When this game doesn't feel extremely frustrating, it just feels sort of off. I don't know. It just seems like a game in its alpha or beta phase rather than an actual stable release. There are so many flaws with this game ranging from graphical failure to its incredibly difficult to virtually impossible gameplay. The game wasn't horrible per se, but it definitely needs improvement. If I could improve this game, I would just expand both the size and variety of the worlds, decrease the insane difficulty so that more people could enjoy playing the game, and, of course, fix the technical bugs.

I don't mind if you happen to like the challenging aesthetic of the new game or any aspect of it, nor do I hate the game or its creators. I just feel like the game is unfinished. It's a ROM hack of Super Mario 64, so I'd expect it to have a little more integrity and be deeper rooted to the original. Without the charm of the original game, it just feels shallow. It has its ups and downs, but I feel like there are more downs than there are ups. The game does feel a bit rushed; if maybe it had more time and nourishment to develop properly, it might have been a better game. I would not recommend Super Mario 64 - Bob Omb Richard Mastertest to friends, although you are fully allowed to give it a try if you would please.

I've never found this hack to be that fun either. I've come back to it several times to see if I could have more fun with the stars I already got. I also tried to get more stars. After completing the first 2 courses, I lost interest in this hack.

I've seen speedrun videos on YouTube of an extreme version of this hack, which is probably worse than the original.

Your review is definitely better than the game You did such a great job with this review! I didn't expect a review of this hack to be so in-depth, so your review surprised me in a good way I can agree with every one of your points in this review. I haven't had that much difficulty with it though since I'm a pro at Super Mario 64, then again I only played the first 2 levels of the hack XD

Keep reviewing!

A agree with PacmanandMariofan here, I think your review is way better than the game is! You did a really good job explaining why you think this game is so bad. I haven't played a lot of Mario 64 hacks, so hearing that this hack isn't worth playing makes it a lot easier for me to choose a Mario 64 hack for me to play.

*Looks at the profile* What, you're a newbie? Damn, you master the art of review almost better than I do. Your structure is excellent, you give it a lot of details AND you make abundant comparisons with the original Mario 64 and even with other N64 games. Cheers!
